Abstract

The utilization of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) based learning media has become a significant factor in enhancing the usefulness and efficiency of the learning process. The objective of this research is to develop R-SIDE applications and to test the usefulness of it for use by senior high school students. The researchers employed the research and development (R&D) method. This method comprises five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The data were collected using two instruments: observation and questionnaire. Prior to implementation, the R-SIDE applications were validated by four experts, comprising two material experts and two media experts. The material expert validators indicated a level of agreement with the items in the "Agree" category, with a mean score of 80.00. Moreover, the media expert validators provided scores of 78 in the "Agree" category and 91.7 in the "Strongly Agree" category. A trial implementation was conducted on 25 students at MAAl Ihsan Tembelang Jombang, with the results of the questionnaires indicating an average score of 85.5, classified as "very good." Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the R-SIDE application is a viable method for engaging students in English learning, particularly in the context of reading skills.

Abstract

The objective of this research  is to analyze English teachers' roles in strengthening character education and its obstacles. Qualitative methods with an inductive approach were used, gathering data through interviews, observations, and field notes. There are two English teachers and the eighth grade students participated in this research, which was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Lahewa Timur. The data analysis techniques used are data condensation, data display, and verification. Results reveal three teacher roles, designing and implementing learning that integrates character values, being role models, and inspirators. Religiousness, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creativity, independence, curiosity, national spirit, love for the country, respect for accomplishment, friendliness, peace, love of reading, environmental and social care, and responsibility are all examples of integrated character values. Lesson plan analysis shows five main character value focuses: religion, honesty, responsibility, hard work, discipline, and environmental care. Obstacles include environmental factors, family, social media, and time constraints. Due to time constraints, one teacher was observed to only verbally communicate their role as an inspirator without putting it into practice in the classroom, according to the Theory of Planned Behavior.

Abstract

Semantics is a branch of linguistics that studies the meaning of language. This study focuses on analyzing the meaning, function, and values ​​of Character Education contained in Javanese proverbs. The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the values ​​of Character Education contained in Javanese proverbs, (2) to find out the meaning of the values ​​of Character Education contained in Javanese proverbs, (3) to find out the function of the values ​​of Character Education contained in Javanese proverbs. The research method used in this study is the descriptive method. The descriptive method is a method that describes or presents data obtained from researchers. The data for this study comes from a book of Javanese proverbs. The data used in this study is secondary data, because it is in the form of words found in the book of Javanese proverbs. The data collection technique in this study is the listening and recording technique. The data analysis used in this study is interactive data analysis. The method for presenting the results of data analysis in this study uses the informal presentation method. This informal presentation is done by presenting the results using words. From the results of data analysis, it can be seen that the expressions contained in Javanese proverbs have 9 values ​​of character education, including: (1) 5 religious, (2) 5 honest, (3) 2 fond of reading, (4) 4 hard work, (5) 1 independent, (6) 4 love peace, (7) 1 appreciate achievement, (8) 1 tolerance, (9) 2 responsibility. The analysis of semantic meaning in Javanese proverbs includes 52 words of lexical meaning analysis, 27 words of grammatical meaning, and 4 words of non-referential meaning. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to be used as an initial reference for researchers who are interested in deepening more about literary research, especially Javanese Proverbs and Character Education

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students’ reading interest by using short stories of Nias and factors that influenced their reading interest at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 4 Namohalu Esiwa. To conduct this research, the researcher used qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. The use of qualitative research with an ethnographic approach can be a valuable method for conducting this study. The researcher shared Nias short story book with the students’ and gave them time during the week to read, and data was collected through a questionnaire and an interview. The data was analyzed using the technique of the Miles and Huberman Theory Framework. Based on the questionnaire, the result showed that the average students’ reading interest in short stories of Nias got 76.5% in the high category. The result obtained from the sixth indicator of reading interest towards short stories of Nias (needs of reading, action to search for reading matter, reading amusement, interest in reading, desire to read, and follow-up). Based on the results of the interview, students’ reading interest towards short stories of Nias influenced by internal and external factors. An internal factor is motivation. External factors are book design and book content, environment, language, and the internet (network).

Abstract

Acquiring English, for several students, can be very tough especially for student that have already used Indonesia language in daily learning. In this extent, The student are seemed in the boundary of learning not acquiring English. In learning English, the student in Ikip Budi Utomo tend to use Bahasa Indonesia, especially who study English Special Purpose in Ikip Budi Utomo. Making use of Bahasa Indonesia might help them a lot in learning English. The researcher, then, was eager to figure out in what way the students who study English Special Purpose in Mathematic department were assisted by Bahasa Indonesia in learning English Special Purpose. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research design.

Abstract

Current methods for teaching reading comprehension tend to emphasize the products of comprehension and neglect the processes of comprehension. Teachers often provide insufficient opportunities for learners to practice English in teaching reading. During teaching reading in a class teachers may confuse to give exercises relate to fluency or accuracy. The correlation between fluency and reading comprehension showed a significant positive relationship between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension performance. Therefore, automaticity of decoding fluency is essential for high levels of reading achievement. Assessing reading fluency, teachers need to listen to students read aloud to make judgments about their progress in reading fluency. In other side, teaching reading in accuracy exercises encourage a thoughtful use of language and the information is intended to help students understand how English works.

Abstract

The point of this article is portraying how the ways Skimming Technique can enhance the primary review understudies' Reading Comprehension Skill on News Item Text at MAN Malang 1. In light of the preparatory study, the specialist found the classroom issues of this class particularly in perusing understanding ability on News Item Text of the primary evaluation understudies of MAN Malang 1. The students got trouble to grasp perusing writings which were given by the English educator. This trouble made 80% of the understudies of this class neglected to achieve the standard least of the school, which is 78.00 in their perusing understanding, and the normal score of this class was just 66.2. In this way, the understudies' perusing cognizance aptitude on News Item message must be moved forward. This study utilized Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the exploration outline. The subjects of this study were one class of the main evaluation understudies which comprised of 37 understudies. The systems of the study secured four stages: arranging, executing, perception, and reflection. The information accumulated was as quantitative and subjective information. The quantitative information was acquired from the perusing appreciation test, and the subjective information was gotten from the understudies perception and agenda and the field note of the educating and learning process.

Abstract

A local term is a non-standard word that is used by groups of teenagers to communicate internally. This research attempts to provide relevant knowledge about local terms, specifically to identify the types and functions of the local terms, the influence of social media on Indonesian teenagers’ usage of local terms, also to analyze the impact of the local terms among teenagers. The researchers chose the descriptive qualitative method to explore the data and accomplish this study. The researchers used an online observation approach to obtain data. The data of this study were 50 samples of local terms from Facebook, Whatsapp, and Twitter. The slang theory from Allan & Burridge in (Savitri, 2021) is used to clarify the types of local terms in this research. The classification of local terms in this study is flippant, imitative, fresh and creative, clipping, and acronym.

Abstract

Although several types of research on speech acts have been widely conducted in many communication activities in Indonesia, studies on speech acts in religious communication inside the church, particularly those involving instructors and Sunday school pupils, are still uncovered. The study deals with the analysis of Speech Acts of The Sunday School Children of St. Fransiskus Assisi Church Medan. The purpose of this study is to describe the presentation of Illocutionary acts and their types which are dominantly used by the Sunday School Teachers. Utilizing Searle’s theory, the research was conducted by using a Qualitative Descriptive Research Method by using a case study research design. The participants of the study were 3 Sunday school teachers and 75 Sunday school children drawn by using purposive sampling technique with a total data of 200 utterances collected using recording and observations, which were analyzed in the study using qualitative data analysis technique to find out the pattern of speech acts. The study shows that there are five types of illocutionary acts used by Sunday school teachers: directives, assertive, expressive, commissions, and declarative. The most dominant type of speech acts in communication presentations were directives reaching up to 68,91%, whereas the least to occur was the declarative type (0.51%). The results of this study restate that the communication aspects that should be practiced in Sunday schools’ children should emphasize persuasive expressions to persuade Sunday school children to be more active in worshiping and listening to God's word as well as to grow their faith.

Abstract

The difficulty found in writing is not only due to the need to generate and organize ideas using the appropriate choice of vocabulary, sentence, and paragraph organization. A descriptive text is one of the texts that can help students to improve their ideas into a text. The researcher used the qualitative method as the way to analyze the data in this research. It focused on analyzing the student’s skill of applying the generic structure of descriptive texts. The writer used the data from the students’ descriptive texts taken from the worksheet of Elementary school 1 Penambangan Probolinggo. The findings are as follows; they do not master the language features of descriptive text and lack vocabulary and got difficulties describing with effective word choice. They failed to show well-organized writing and did not use identification appropriately, the last they were still unable to transfer and develop their ideas into a written form well in composing a text and do not use the description process in writing appropriately. Finally, the researcher concluded that some students at Elementary school 1 Penambangan Probolinggo still need more practice to choose a topic that they are about to discuss and to arrange the descriptions with proper connectives.
