Limited digital and data literacy can hinder systematic documentation of local medicinal-plant knowledge in Islamic boarding schools. This community service program empowered students’ data literacy through participatory curation of a structured herbal dataset. The six-week activity involved 15 students and two teachers and comprised needs assessment, digital-literacy training, field data collection, dataset curation, checking, evaluation, and reflection. Achievement was assessed descriptively through three performance components: computer use, Google Sheets data processing, and data capture and storage. Their arithmetic mean increased from 62.4 to 86.6, a 24.1-point or 38.7% change relative to the initial mean. This result describes only the participating group and does not establish causality. The program produced 75 standardized herbal entries that underwent completeness, naming-consistency, and basic plant-data checks. Structured metadata, tabular formatting, process documentation, and restricted access represented an initial orientation toward FAIR principles rather than full FAIR compliance.
