Abstract

Productive zakat can support household food access by financing food-production assets and sustained mentoring, but operational outputs should not be interpreted as nutrition impacts. This community service evaluated an intervention integrating home gardens and village chickens for mustahik households in Melung Village, Banyumas Regency. Sixty-two households were screened using economic vulnerability, food conditions, household-space readiness, and willingness to participate; 41 were selected. Evaluation used distribution records, field observation, brief interviews, activity documentation, and four monitoring rounds. Indicators covered beneficiary reach, chicken survival, egg production, hatching, vegetable utilization, and implementation barriers. The programme distributed 205 chickens; 204 survived to 30 January 2026, 25 households reported egg production, and three reported successful hatching. Vegetables were harvested for household use and sharing. These findings indicate activation of household food-production assets, not proven improvements in food security or nutritional status. Longer follow-up should measure dietary diversity, egg consumption, food expenditure, income, and asset sustainability.
