Abstract

Development is expected to promote equitable welfare; however, socioeconomic inequality and environmental vulnerability remain evident in coastal slum settlements, including RW 06 of Tanjung Unggat. Residents face recurrent tidal flooding, inadequate sanitation, and economic constraints that adversely affect their quality of life. This study aims to describe the adaptation strategies developed by the community to sustain their livelihoods and cope with environmental risks. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Seven informants were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, while Bennett’s adaptation theory was employed as the theoretical framework. The findings reveal three main dimensions of community adaptation. Physically and environmentally, residents independently elevated house floors and modified building structures to reduce the impacts of tidal flooding. Economically, households diversified their sources of income and managed expenditures more efficiently. Socially, residents strengthened mutual assistance and shared disaster-related information. These strategies demonstrate the community’s active efforts to survive under limited access to adequate infrastructure, services, and economic resources. Community adaptation in RW 06 of Tanjung Unggat represents an active response to environmental and socioeconomic pressures rather than an optimal choice. The findings contribute to the understanding of socioecological adaptation in coastal slum settlements and highlight the need for local governments to integrate community knowledge into slum-upgrading policies and disaster mitigation planning.
