Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a chronic disease requiring long-term therapy; thus, treatment success is heavily influenced by patient adherence to antihypertensive medication. Family support plays a crucial role in enhancing patient adherence by providing emotional, informational, appraisal, and instrumental support. Such support can boost patient motivation to adhere to the treatment regimen, help control blood pressure, prevent complications, and improve the patient's quality of life. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between family support and medication adherence among hypertensive patients. Method: A descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The study sample consisted of 95 outpatients with hypertension, selected using consecutive sampling whereby all patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited sequentially until the required sample size was reached. Data were collected using a family support questionnaire, the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), and the pill count method. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. Results: The majority of respondents received a "good" level of family support (90.5%). Medication adherence levels were high: 95.7% according to the MMAS-8 instrument and 92.6% based on the pill count method. Analysis revealed a significant relationship between family support and medication adherence (p=0.034; r=0.218), with a weak correlation strength and a positive relationship. Conclusion: The better the family support received by patients, the higher their level of treatment adherence. Therefore, the involvement of families alongside healthcare professionals needs to be further strengthened to support successful hypertension treatment.   Keywords: Family Support; Hypertension; Medication Adherence.
