This study describes the forms of negative stigma directed at pesantren on social media, analyzes the crisis communication management strategy, and identifies its supporting and inhibiting factors at Pondok Pesantren Dar el-Iman Padang. Employing a qualitative case study, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, and validated through triangulation. The findings show that the negative stigma largely results from the generalization of negative coverage about pesantren in general rather than internal cases, spreading rapidly and massively and affecting the institution’s image and public trust. The pesantren responded with a proactive crisis communication strategy emphasizing positive-narrative building; prompt, transparent, and empathetic clarification; the integrated use of online and offline channels; and trust restoration by leveraging its tahfidz excellence as reputational capital. This strategy was supported by human resources, leadership policy, facilities, and reputation, yet constrained by limited specialized resources, the absence of standard crisis-handling procedures, and the heavy flow of negative information. The study contributes a perspective in which tahfidz excellence operates as proactive reputational capital through a three-layer pattern of prevention, response, and recovery for tahfidz-based Islamic educational institutions.
