Abstract

Kata Kunci: mikroplastik, air, sedimen, kerang tahu (Meretrix sp.), perairan pesisirABSTRACTThe increasing use of plastic in Indonesia contributes to the rising contamination of microplastics in marine waters. Plastics that are difficult to degrade fragment into particles smaller than 5 mm, which are persistent and potentially harmful to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Pangeranan Waters, Bangkalan Regency, Madura Island, are potentially contaminated by microplastics due to domestic activities, fisheries, and coastal activities. This study aims to determine and compare the abundance and types of microplastics in water, sediment, and hard clam (Meretrix sp.) in Pangeranan Waters. Sampling was conducted using purposive sampling method. Microplastic analysis followed the procedures of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and identification was carried out using a stereo microscope. The results showed that microplastics were found in all sample matrices with varying abundance across stations and sampling periods. The abundance ranged from 2.56–5.76 particles/L in water, 0.98–3.54 particles/g in sediment, and 0.18–0.72 particles/individual in hard clams. Fragments were the dominant microplastic type in water and sediment, followed by fibers, while films were found in the lowest quantities. In contrast, fibers were the dominant microplastic type found in Meretrix sp. The presence of microplastics across all samples indicates potential microplastic contamination in Pangeranan waters, highlighting the need for monitoring as part of coastal environmental management. Keywords: microplastics, water, sediment, hard clam (Meretrix sp.), coastal waters
