This study aims to determine the ability of snail shell chitosan as an antibacterial on cotton fabric based on the effect of variations in soaking time on growth activity of Staphylococcus aureus. Preparation of chitosan be done in three phases demineralization, deproteination and deacetylation, then chitosan acetate is prepared by dissolving chitosan in a 2% acetic acid solution. The coating of cotton fabric through soaking using sodium periodate is followed by the coating of chitosan acetate with a variation of the soaking time of 1 minute, 5 minutes and 10 minutes. Antibacterial activity test using the stocking method. The results showed that the longer the soaking time, the bacterial growth decreases. It was concluded that chitosan acetate can inhibit the growth activity of Staphylococcus aureus.
