Abstract

Background: Plant-based ethnomedicine practices remain a vital part of rural public health systems. Knowledge regarding the use of medicinal plants is passed down through generations, yet it has not been scientifically documented, placing it at risk of being lost as times change. Purpose: To identify the types of medicinal plants, the plant parts used, preparation methods, modes of administration, and the types of ailments treated by the village community. Method: This is a descriptive qualitative study employing an ethnographic approach. It was conducted in Camplong 2 Village, Fatuleu District, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving three key informants and 27 additional informants. Data analysis was performed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results: Forty seven species of medicinal plants utilized by the community were identified. The plant part most frequently used was the leaf (59%), the dominant preparation method was boiling (57%), and the most common method of administration was oral consumption (54%). These medicinal plants were used to treat 34 types of ailments categorized into 10 groups, with the category comprising fever and general bodily complaints being the most prevalent (19%). Conclusion: Village communities continue to maintain plant-based ethnomedicine practices rich in local knowledge. The diversity of medicinal plant species, along with the methods of their preparation and use, demonstrates that traditional medicine still plays a vital role in maintaining community health.   Keywords: Ethnomedicine; Medicinal Plants; Traditional Medicine.
