This study aims to describe the implementation of a Healthy Living-based Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach on the lesson “我感冒了” and its impact on the Mandarin speaking skills of fourth-grade students at Cheng Hoo Islamic Elementary School in Surabaya. This study employs a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods, using a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group. The research subjects consisted of students in Class 4B as the experimental group and Class 4A as the control group. Data collection was conducted through oral tests and observations. Oral tests were administered as pre-tests and post-tests to measure Mandarin speaking skills, while observations were used as supporting data to describe the learning process. The results showed that the initial proficiency levels of both classes were at the same average score, namely 25. After implementing Healthy Living-based CLIL, the experimental class’s post-test average score increased to 80.75, representing an increase of 55.75 and an N-Gain of 0.74, which falls into the high category. The results of the Paired Sample T-Test for the experimental class also showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. In contrast, the control class scored an average of 25 on both the pre-test and post-test, showing no improvement with an N-Gain of 0. Descriptively, the results indicate an improvement in speaking skills among the classes that received CLIL instruction based on “Healthy Living.” The use of the “我感冒了” material, which is linked to healthy living habits, provided a context more closely related to the students’ daily lives, thereby supporting the use of Mandarin in speaking activities.
