Abstract

The implementation of Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) under the Kurikulum Merdeka requires learning experiences that connect scientific concepts with students’ real-world environments. This study examined changes in students’ science process skills and environmental awareness through a digital science magazine contextualized to the local potential of Kebon Rojo, Blitar. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design involved 59 fifth-grade students at SDN Nglegok 01, Blitar Regency. Data were collected using a science process skills test and a five-point Likert-scale environmental awareness questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test, effect size, and normalized gain. Science process skills increased from M = 3.93 (SD = 2.27) to M = 9.80 (SD = 4.56), with a significant difference (Z = -6.69, p < .001), large effect size (r = .87), and moderate N-Gain (0.58). All six indicators improved, with the largest gains in communicating results (59.2 points) and analyzing data and information (57.2 points). Environmental awareness increased from M = 39.56 (SD = 12.39) to M = 45.90 (SD = 9.76), also showing a significant difference (Z = -4.52, p < .001) and large effect size (r = .62). Environmental responsibility showed the largest increase among the five dimensions (15 points). These findings indicate that contextualizing IPAS learning through Kebon Rojo and interactive digital resources can support improvements in students’ science process skills and environmental awareness.
