This study aims to: (1) describe the implementation of the Work-Based Learning (WBL) approach in the automotive engine maintenance and repair subject; and (2) improve students’ practical skills and learning outcomes through WBL in Class XI TBSM at SMK Dian Teknik Ambal. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design with two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 30 Class XI TBSM students. Data were collected through a 15-indicator practical skills observation sheet (Likert scale 1–4) and a 25-item multiple-choice cognitive test. WBL was implemented using a project-based teaching module, structured job sheets with checklists, direct workshop demonstrations, individual mentoring, and peer mentor strategies. Results showed that the mean practical skills percentage increased from 48.75% (Poor, pre-cycle) to 66.25% (Fair, Cycle I) and 83.13% (Good, Cycle II), surpassing the 76% success indicator. The class mean score improved from 60.80 (pre-cycle) to 68.10 (Cycle I) and 78.60 (Cycle II), while classical completeness rose from 43.33% to 60.00% and 90.00%, exceeding the minimum 80% target. These findings confirm that the WBL approach effectively integrates authentic work experience with vocational theory, significantly improving both practical competency and cognitive achievement in automotive engine maintenance.
