Varel. 2026. “Optimization of Main Deck Maintenance to Minimize Corrosion on Board MT. SHIP 111”. Diploma III Nautical Studies Program, Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat. Supervisor I: Rizal Rochmansyah, S.S.T.Pel., M.Tr.T. and Super-visor II: Melda Yanti, M.Si.This study aims to examine the implementation of the main deck maintenance, identify the factors causing corrosion, and analyze efforts to optimize main deck maintenance to minimize corrosion on board MT. SHIP 111. This study employed a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants con-sisted of the Chief Officer, Bosun, and Able Seaman who were directly involved in main deck maintenance activities. Data analysis was conducted through data re-duction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of maintenance had been carried out through routine inspections, chipping, wire brushing, painting, and maintenance recordkeeping. However, its implementation was not yet optimal due to inconsistent completion of maintenance work through the finishing stage, as well as the high workload of ship operations, unfavorable weather conditions, and inadequate equipment and materials. The main factors causing corrosion on the main deck include exposure to seawater containing chloride ions, high humidity, environmental temperature, and damage to the protective coating. Efforts to optimize maintenance include consistent im-plementation of PMS, increased supervision of maintenance activities, provision of adequate equipment and materials, and proper painting procedures through the finishing stage.
