This study aims to analyze the need for Indonesian language teaching materials within the context of implementing deep learning in secondary schools, based on the perceptions of teachers and students. A quantitative descriptive approach using a survey method was employed. The study participants consisted of 12 teachers and 205 students from five secondary schools in West Sumatra. Data were collected via a needs analysis questionnaire covering four indicators: learning needs, learning objectives, student characteristics, and the learning environment. The data were subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that both teachers and students view the current Indonesian language teaching materials as essential for supporting deep learning. Teachers emphasized the need for materials that foster conceptual understanding, higher-order thinking, exploration, discussion, and reflection, while also incorporating digital resources and conceptual visualizations. Meanwhile, students highlighted the need for contextual examples, reasoning exercises, visual aids, and discussion activities to facilitate deep understanding. As the learning environment was found to be relatively conducive, the primary challenge lies in the design of the teaching materials. This study underscores the importance of developing Indonesian language teaching materials grounded in deep learning principles.
