The development of social media as a digital communication space has increased language diversity and created potential legal issues, including defamation. This study aims to examine the concept of forensic linguistics and its role in analyzing defamation on Instagram. The research uses a literature review method with a qualitative descriptive approach by analyzing scientific sources related to forensic linguistics, defamation, social media, and digital discourse. The findings show that forensic linguistics plays an important role in revealing the meaning, intention, and function of utterances through semantic, pragmatic, and contextual analysis. The analysis of defamation on Instagram faces several challenges, including ambiguity of meaning and sarcasm, limited conversational context, the use of slang and emojis, indirect identification of the target, and anonymity and authenticity of accounts. Instagram communication is also characterized by short, spontaneous, expressive, and multimodal language, requiring careful interpretation. Therefore, forensic linguistics can provide a scientific analysis of linguistic evidence and support the legal proof process by examining language, context, and communicative function without directly determining guilt or innocence.
