Abstract

The rapid flow of information in the digital era has given rise to the massive spread of disinformation (hoaxes), including religiously framed hoaxes that risk triggering social unrest and division. This article examines the concept of tabayyun as stated in QS. Al-Hujurat [49]: 6 through an interpretive (tafsir) analysis and explores its relevance to contemporary digital literacy needs. Using a library research method with a thematic (maudhu’i) interpretive approach, this study collects and analyzes the views of classical and contemporary exegetes on the verse. The findings indicate that tabayyun in QS. Al-Hujurat [49]: 6 commands believers to verify the truth of news, particularly when it comes from an unreliable (fasiq) source, before believing or disseminating it, so as not to cause harm to others through haste and ignorance. The epistemic and ethical values embedded in this principle—verification, clarification, prudence, and social responsibility in conveying information—are highly relevant as a theological foundation for digital literacy, particularly in cultivating the Muslim community's critical awareness when consuming and sharing information on social media. Thus, tabayyun may be positioned not merely as a normative theological value, but also as an applicable framework of communication ethics in confronting the challenge of disinformation in the digital age.
