Abstract

Postoperative pain is one of the problems frequently experienced by patients after surgical procedures under general anesthesia. Non-pharmacological interventions can be used as complementary approaches to help reduce pain intensity and improve patient comfort. This community service activity aimed to identify the characteristics of patients after general anesthesia surgery and to describe pain intensity before and after the implementation of finger-hold relaxation at Jatiwinangun Hospital. The activity was conducted in June 2026 at Jatiwinangun Hospital with 32 postoperative patients who met the predetermined criteria. The intervention was performed six hours after surgery when the patients were fully conscious, hemodynamically stable, and had returned to the treatment room. Pain intensity was measured before the intervention, followed by education using a leaflet and approximately 10 minutes of finger-hold relaxation, and then pain was measured again. The results showed that 50% of participants were adults aged 26–45 years, 50% were male and 50% female, while 81.2% underwent major surgery. Before the intervention, the most common pain score was 6 in 14 participants (43.8%). After the intervention, the most common pain score was 3 in 15 participants (46.9%). The findings indicate a decrease in postoperative pain intensity following the implementation of finger-hold relaxation. This technique may be used as a simple, safe, and complementary non-pharmacological intervention in postoperative pain management.
