Abstract

Song lyrics can function as literary materials in English Language Education when learners interpret meaning through observable textual evidence. This analysis examines figurative language, moral foundations, and text-based relation in three songs from The Greatest Showman soundtrack, namely “A Million Dreams,” “Rewrite the Stars,” and “This Is Me.” The data consist of 153 analyzable lyric lines from archived Spotify lyric displays. Using descriptive qualitative content analysis, each line was coded separately for figurative language and moral foundations before relation analysis was conducted. The findings show 101 figurative language occurrences, with metaphor as the dominant type. The findings also show 79 moral foundation occurrences, with loyalty as the dominant foundation. Relation analysis identifies 48 lines where figurative wording expresses, clarifies, or reinforces moral foundations. The analysis shows that lyric interpretation becomes more evidence-based when each claim moves from textual signal to category indicator and then to textual evidence. The findings support evidence-based lyric interpretation for English Language Education by providing a structured procedure that teachers can adapt for EFL reading activities, where students identify figurative expressions, examine textual meanings, and justify interpretations with evidence from lyric lines.
