Abstract

Despite extensive grammar instruction, a preliminary study found that English Language Education (ELE) undergraduates still struggled to understand, use, and retain grammatical rules, particularly those of the perfect tenses. These issues indicate the need for teachers to apply appropriate grammar-teaching strategies. One possible strategy for teaching grammar is by implementing digital games. Therefore, using a classroom action research design that involved 29 ELE undergraduates, this study aimed to improve students’ mastery and retention of the perfect tenses through the integration of a digital game called Baamboozle. The primary data were collected through grammar tests and manually calculated against the success criteria. However, during Cycle 1, Baamboozle was not integrated in a way that provided students with sufficient practice, which then caused improvement to occur after two cycles. In addition, students’ delayed test results showed that, after a six-week interval, most retained their mastery of the perfect tenses, though some experienced a decline in scores. While the implementation of Baamboozle appeared to contribute to improvements in students’ mastery and retention through consistent games and quizzes, immediate corrective feedback, multimodal input, and interactive learning activities, some decline in retention may have been influenced by differences in practice intensity, the forgetting phase, and individual learning strategies or preferences. Given that their mastery of grammar does not necessarily reflect long-term retention, which may remain stable, improve, or decrease over time, teachers should identify appropriate teaching and learning strategies to support both.
