Abstract

Digital religious preaching has become an influential medium through which Islamic ethical and legal perspectives on environmental sustainability are articulated and circulated. However, how digitally mediated da’wah constructs relationships between humans, nature, and development through different interpretations of Islamic law remains insufficiently explored. This study examines the environmental discourse of three Indonesian preachers: Muhammad Aji Nugroho, Mustofa Bisri, and Abdul Somad, through the analytical lenses of eco-humanism, eco-modernism, and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah. Employing a qualitative design that combines critical thematic analysis, critical discourse analysis, and netnographic perspectives, the study analyses 30 purposively selected materials published or circulated between 2025 and 2026. The findings identify two distinct orientations in Islamic environmental preaching. Eco-humanism, represented by Aji Nugroho and Mustofa Bisri, adopts a substantive interpretation of maqāṣid that emphasizes ecological responsibility, moral restraint, and the intrinsic significance of nature. Eco-modernism, exemplified by Abdul Somad, adopts a functional interpretation centered on human stewardship (khalifah), religious accountability, and the legitimacy of development within Sharia boundaries. The study demonstrates that these orientations reflect not merely differences in ecological philosophy but also divergent modes of Islamic legal reasoning. By conceptualizing digitally mediated da’wah as a site of legal-ethical interpretation, this research advances understanding of how Islamic environmental ethics engage with contemporary sustainable development.
