Abstract

The public street lighting (PSL) is typically controlled for 12 hours at night along major city roads. However, driving and walking activity is typically limited to the first six hours. During the following six hours, the streets are relatively quiet. Meanwhile, all streetlights must remain on. This scenario implies significant energy inefficiency. In smart city development, energy efficiency is a key goal. This study presents a cost-effective strategy by implementing an adaptive switching system for street lighting that only activates lights when a moving vehicle is detected.  The number of activated lights is determined by the vehicle's speed, which is classified into three categories: below 25 km/h, medium 25–50 km/h, and above 50 km/h. Each range triggers the simultaneous activation of two, three, or four lights, respectively. High speeds require a longer viewing distance, so the street lights in front of the vehicle must be on more frequently to provide further visibility. These lights are kept on to follow the movement of the moving vehicle along the road. The results of this laboratory-scale prototype successfully operated according to the desired scenario. The sensor's performance demonstrated speed detection accuracy for moving vehicles with an error of actual speed less than 5 km/h. Furthermore, the evaluation of the electrical power consumption of the speed variants shows significant savings compared to traditional usage. The energy saving for moving vehicles, regardless of speed—varies between 63.4% and 75.6%, which is very significant. Therefore, this proposed design is worthy of consideration as an alternative reference in the development of new energy-saving PSL systems.
