Abstract

Church attendance has been a subject of extensive scholarly inquiry, with declining participation observed across various cultural and geographical contexts. The factors influencing attendance are multifaceted, encompassing theological, sociological, psychological, and practical dimensions. Understanding these factors is crucial for the sustainability and vitality of religious communities worldwide. This study aims to synthesize and critically analyze existing literature on how congregational preferences influence church attendance, integrating findings from diverse global contexts to develop a comprehensive framework for church management. A qualitative systematic literature review approach was employed, analyzing peer-reviewed articles from multiple countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Germany, Thailand, and Indonesia. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring patterns and themes. The findings reveal that congregational preferences significantly influence attendance, with key factors including worship style and music, preaching quality, leadership effectiveness and accountability, facility comfort, social support systems, and cultural relevance. Charismatic worship styles, interactive preaching, strong leadership, and family support emerged as particularly influential drivers of attendance. Understanding and adapting to congregational preferences is a strategic imperative for church leaders seeking to enhance participation and engagement. This study provides a comprehensive framework bridging sociological theories of religious choice with practical implications for church management, offering insights for both academic discourse and practical ministry.
