Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of implementing the Reading Competition Game method on the literacy skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 32 Jelutung. Children’s reading interest in Indonesia remains low, including at SD Negeri 32 Jelutung, which impacts their reading ability and academic achievement. The Reading Competition Game combines elements of play and competition, expected to enhance students’ reading interest, reading skills, and text comprehension by creating a more enjoyable and interactive learning environment. This study uses a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design involving 20 fourth-grade students. Literacy data were collected through a 15-item questionnaire before and after the intervention and analyzed using paired samples t-test with SPSS 21. The results show a significant improvement in students’ literacy skills, with the average pretest score increasing from 4.05 to7.80 in the posttest. The statistical test significance value was 0.000 (<0.05), confirming that the Reading Competition Game method positively affects students’ literacy skills. This study concludes that the Reading Competition Game is an effective learning strategy to improve students’ literacy. The method not only enhances literacy scores but also fosters motivation and enthusiasm for learning significantly. It is recommended that this method be further developed and adapted according to students’ characteristics for optimal results.
