Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) is an Indonesian tuber crop with potential as a source of bioactive compounds. This study evaluated the physicochemical characteristics and phytochemical constituents of porang corm material and the in vitro antibacterial activity of its ethanol extract against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Dried corm powder was characterized, the ethanol extract was qualitatively screened for secondary metabolites, and antibacterial activity was assessed by agar disk diffusion at extract concentrations of 5%, 7.5%, and 10%, with clindamycin and 5% dimethyl sulfoxide as positive and negative controls, respectively. Total ash, acid-insoluble ash, moisture, water-soluble extractive, and ethanol-soluble extractive contents were 5.30%, 0.78%, 6.00%, 32.63%, and 5.01%, respectively. Alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins were detected. Mean inhibition-zone diameters were 7.93, 8.76, and 10.40 mm at 5%, 7.5%, and 10%, respectively; the positive control produced a mean diameter of 25.90 mm, whereas the negative control produced no inhibition zone. These findings indicate concentration-associated in vitro growth inhibition of S. epidermidis by the porang corm ethanol extract. Further phytochemical, antimicrobial, and safety studies are required before clinical application.
