Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT     The educational system across the world has immensely been affected due to outbreak of Covid-19. In the absence of traditional classroom teaching, online learning has emerged as closest substitute for offline teaching. Against such a backdrop, it is pertinent to examine the students’ perception about online learning system adopted at the university level during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This research aims to identify the students’ perceptions on the ease of use and usefulness of online learning based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and to analyze the factors influencing students’ perceptions towards English online learning especially in EFL context. For the present study, the descriptive approach with survei method has been adopted and responses from 97 students of English Department of Sam Ratulangi University were collected through online questionnaire and structured interviews. Purposive sampling was used to obtain the sample and ten students were interviewed to seek more information about their experiences during the learning process. The findings of the study reveal students’ positive perception towards online learning and thus acceptance of the new learning system. It has also empirically demonstrated the significance of online learning in the time of Covid-19 crisis. There were several factors that influence the students’ perception, which were the perceiver, the object, and the situation. The participants agreed that online learning has emerged as a new way of enhancing the learning process and may further improve the learning output.Keywords: students’ perception, online learning, English learning, Covid-19

Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Ekspresi Verbal dan Non-verbal dalam Mengekspresikan Ketakutan dan Kemarahan dalam Film Ready or Not oleh Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillet (Analisis Psikolinguistik)”. Communication can be divided into two classes, verbal communication and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication is when we communicate our message verbally. It requires the use of words, vocabulary and the symbols. Non verbal communication includes facial expression, gestures, tone, body – movement, eye – contact, mannerism, paralinguistics, humour, language of touch etc. Some of types of fear is anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, concern,consternation, wriness, qualm, edginess, dread, fright, terror, phobia, panic. The some of types of anger is fury,outrage, vexation, annoyance, pathological hatred, an violence. The objectives of this research is to Identify, classify, and analyze the types of communication in fear and anger expression in the movie Ready or Not. The researcher used descriptive method in order to find out the verbal and non-verbal expression in fear and anger expression in the movie Ready or Not supported by Gubta (2008) and Goleman’s (1995) theory. The result of this research shows the expression of fear can be detected through shaking hands and other movements such as rubbing the nape of the neck, the tone of voice that rises and falls, the sentence of pauses, eye contact that indicates pleading and panic. Expression of anger can also be identified through body movements such as hitting, pointing with the index finger, choking, the presence of an exclamation mark at the end of a sentence in a high tone of voice, eye contact that shows annoyance or defiant gaze, and emotional behavior.Keywords : Expression, Verbal, Non-verbal, Fear, Anger, Ready or Not

Abstract

Lasut3 This study entitled “ Illocutionary Act in Whatsapp Group Brighter “, is an analysis of pragmatic investigation that focuses on one aspect of speech acts called the illocutionary act. This research is an attempt to find out the kinds and functions of the illocutionary act in the Whatsapp group. The research uses descriptive qualitative method. The collected data were taken from the chat of the members of the group based on the theory of Searle. The research finding shows that there are three categories of illocutionary acts in Whatsapp Group Brighter. Those are assertives : asserting, stating, suggesting, and complaining. directives : requesting, commanding, begging, commanding and expressives : caviling and deep condolences. This study is expected to give contribution to language development in linguistic studies especially in analyzing illocutionary acts through pragmatic analysis.Keywords: Illocutionary act, Whatsapp group Brighter, pragmatics analysis

Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     This study entitled “Illocutionary Act in the Drama Riders to the Sea By J. M. Synge“ is an analysis of pragmatic investigation that focuses on one aspect of speech acts called the illocutionary act. This research is an attempt to find out the kinds and functions of the illocutionary act in the drama. The collected data have been taken through the utterances uttered by the characters and analyzed descriptively based on the theory of Searle. The research finding shows that there are three categories of illocutionary acts in that drama. Those are assertives : (asserting), (complaining), (proposing), and (reporting). Directives : (advising), (begging), (ordering), and (requesting). Expressives : (deep condolences) and (caviling). This study is expected to give a contribution to language development in linguistic studies especially in analyzing illocutionary acts through pragmatic analysis.Keywords: Illocutionary act, drama Riders to the Sea, pragmatics analysis.

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT     This research entitled Mood in English and Manado Malay Language: A Contrastive Analysis. The aims of this study are to identify and classify the kinds and functions of mood and analyze the differences and similarities of mood in English and Manado Malay language. This research used a descriptive method. The writer used Aarts and Aarts (1982) and Frank (1972) theory to identify and classify the kinds and functions of mood and Lado’s (1957) theory to contrast both languages to find out the differences and similarities. The result of this research shows 3 kinds of mood with each function in both languages. Kinds and functions of mood in English are indicative mood to declare all situation without the imperative and subjunctive mood, subjunctive mood to declare uncertainty, wish, and encourage, and imperative mood to declare command, request and instruction. Kinds and functions of mood in Manado Malay language are indicative mood to declare all situation, subjunctive mood to declare uncertainty and encourage, and imperative mood to declare command, instruction, and request. The similarity in both languages are has the same definition and function to explain a fact (indicative) or nonfact (subjunctive, imperative) situation. The differences in both languages are English has regular and irregular verb and using ‘to be’ to distinguish singular and plural, whereas Manado Malay language has no an alteration of verb form towards singular or plural.Keywords: Mood, Manado Malay Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT     This research is entilend “Simbol-Simbol Takhayul dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Galela Suatu Analisis Kontrastif”. The purposes of this study are to identify and classfy superstitious symbols in English and Galela,and to analyze and describe the diffrences and similiraties of superstitious symbols in English and Galela langguage this research focuses on semiotic analysis by looking at the cases and meaning of superstitious symbols. This research used a descriptive method. The writer uses the theory of Charles B Luck (2016), Delacroix dan Guilland (2008) and Pierce (1958, quoted by Westle and Fokler, 2018) and Lado‟s (1957) theory‟s to contrasting both langguage to find out the differences and similarity. Researcher collected the data about English symbols from semiotic books, journals, theses and articles related to linguistic and looked for information on internet in research blogs that contain discussions about superstitious symbols that exist in England and also in British Empire, and Galela language data were taken by reading articles on the internet that discussed superstition in Indonesia and directly asking informants who still believe in superstitious The result of this study indicates that English has seventy-one types of superstitious symbols and the Galela language has forty-eight kinds of superstitious symbols. It has been found that there are four different superstitious symbols in English and Galela, namely motion and action, inanimate objects, animal and food, some similarities and different beliefs in the situation, as well as the meaning contained in each superstitious symbol.Keyword : Superstitious Symbol, SemioticEnglish and Galela Language,Contrastiv Analysis

Abstract

                                             ABSTRACT      This research entitled “Child Neglect as Reflected in the Novel A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett” is the requirement for the Sarjana Sastra degree in the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The writer use Robert’s theory to identify psychology of the main character. Boswell theory use to explore the child neglect that happened to Sara Crewe. This research use descriptive qualitative method. Two approaches are applied in analyzing the data: they are intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic is used to identify the characters. The extrinsic one aims at analyzing the child neglect, the causes and the impact. The purpose of this research is to identify, analyze, and describe child neglect and its causes in the novel A Little Princess. The result of this research is to improve the knowledge of readers about the causes and resolve of child neglect that lately happened in human life.Keywords: novel, child neglect, the causes, psychology analysis.

Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Penggambaran Tragedi Pahlawan dalam Film Gladiator oleh Ridley Scott” is intended as a requirement to accomplish the ”Sarjana” degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze tragic hero characteristics on film Gladiator by Ridley Scott. The writer uses qualitative research method with film and narrative elements approach in order to identify and classify how it is support the representation of tragic hero on theme, characterizations, conflict, and settings through the Gladiator film. The writer uses the theory of tragic hero by Aristotle as the main theory to analyze the tragic hero in Gladiator film. The result of this research shows that the element of narrative on theme, characterizations, conflict and settings being depicted through the film in order to build the environment of tragedy. This environment helps showing the tragedy process of the main character in the film while picturing the idea of tragic hero based on Aristotle theory. Maximus as the main character in Gladiator film endures the tragic hero completely based on Aristotle theory. As the film Gladiator runs to the end of the film, Maximus endures the elements of tragedy in several specific scenes to picture hamartia, hubris, peripertia, anagronisis, nemesis, and carthasis.Keyword: Tragic Hero, Gladiator, Film, Aristotelian, Ridley Scott.
