Abstract

Lasut, M.Hum2                                Donald Ringgo Lotulung, S.S, M.Hum3     This study entitled “Expressive Act in the Film The Kissing Booth by Vince Marcello: A Pragmatic Analysis”. It is written to identify, classify and analyze the kinds and functions of Expressive Act in the Film The Kissing Booth. The method that is used in this research is descriptive method and the data of expressive act were taken from the film The Kissing Booth. The data have been analyzed by using theory of Searle (1976). There are six kinds of expressive act in the film The Kissing Booth by Vince Marcello, those are apologizing, praising, thanking, congratulating, greeting and blaming. The functions that have been found are expressive act expressing apologizing, expressive act expressing praising, expressive act expressing thanking, expressive act expressing congratulating, expressive act expressing greeting, and expressive act expressing blaming, while function like pardoning and condoling were not found in the film The Kissing Booth. Abstract

                                                 ABSTRACT     Siti Haryanti Pauwah¹ Dr. Rina P. Pamantung, M.Hum² Stephani J. Sigarlaki, S.S, M.Hum³ The research, entitled “Affixation of Verb in Novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen” was written as a study to describe and analyze inflectional and derivational affixes in terms of form, function, and meaning in verbs. This research uses a descriptive method. The data were taken from the novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (1983) then, by identifying, classifying, and analyzing inflectional affixes and derivational affixes according to their form, function, and meaning using the theory of O'Grady and Dobrovolsky (1997). The results of this study are, there were 7 types of verb affixation in the Novel Northanger Abbey novel, namely, prefixes /-de/, /dis-/, and /re-/, and suffixes /- es/, /-ing/, /-ed/, and /-en/. Based on function, inflection affix and derivation affix. Inflection affixes that express the meaning of the third person singular the suffix /-es/ is 11 words. Inflectional affixes that express the meaning of progressive the suffix /-ing/is 11 words. Inflectional affixes that express the meaning of the past tense the suffix /-ed/is 8 words. While the derivational affixes that were found consisted of 10 prefixes and 1 suffixes. Derivation affixes which express the meaning of doing something or causing something, suffix /-en/ is 1 word. Derivation affixes that express the meaning of lowering or opposite to the basic prefix /de-/ is 2 words. Derivation affixes that express the meaning of no, the opposite or the opposite of the word attached to the prefix /dis-/ is 6 words. Derivation affixes that express meaning again, repeat or return the prefix /re-/ is 2 words. Theoretically, this research is expected to provide insight in the field of morphology, especially in verb affixation. Practically, this research can increase the knowledge of readers who want to know about affixation, especially verb affixation in the novel Northanger Abbey. As well as for students who want to deepen their understanding of verbs in English, especially students of the English Department, Faculty of Humanities, University of Sam Ratulangi to get more information about verb affixation and for improvement research. ______________________________Keywords: Affixation, Verb, Prefix, Suffix, Descriptive, Novel Northanger Abbey.

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRAKTION     Diese Untersuchung bespricht über die narrative Strukturenanalyse in den Anthologiemärchen der Brüder Grimm unter die Begleitung der Untersuchungsanalysemethode von Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp. Propp ist der erste Strukturalis, der die Bedeutung der Narrativstrukturen in dem Märchen analysiert hat. Die Ziele sind die Narrativfunktionen und die Aktionsumgebung (sphere of actions) beschreiben. Aus diesem Grund verwendeten die Autoren in dieser Studie beschreibend Methoden. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse unter acht Märchen kann einigen Zusammenfassungen formuliert werden, das heiβt: (1) Der Süβe Brei Märchen werden sechs Funktionen gefunden. Und dann nach den Narrativfunktionen werden zwei Aktionsumgebungen gefunden; (2) In den undankbaren Kindergeschichten werden zwei Funktionen gefunden und die Narrativfunktionen findet man zwei Aktionsumgebungen; (3) Der hahnenbalken Märchen werden sieben Funktionen gefunden, gleichzeitig in den Narrativfunktionen gibt es zwei Aktionsumgebung; (4) Die drei Faulensmärchen werden drei Funktionen gefunden, so eben die Narrativfunktionen besteht aus zwei Aktionsumgebungen gefunde; (5) Die Brautschaumsmärchen gibt es drei Funktionen, gleichzeitig Narrativfunktionen besteht aus Aktionsumgebungen; (6) in Rätselmärchen findet man hier zwei Funktionen, gleichzeitig in den Narrativfunktionen gibt es zwei Aktionsumgebungen; (7) Der kluge Knechtsmärchen findet man vier Funktionen, und dann in den Narrativfunktionen gibt es drei Aktionsumgebungen; (8) In der Brosamen auf dem Tisch – Märchen findet man sechs Funktionen, gleichzeitig nach den Narrativfunktionen gibt es zwei Aktionsumgebungen.Stichwörter : die narrative Strukturen, Vladimir Propp, Märchen, Brüder Grimm

Rattu, SS, M,Mktg2                                   Dr. Garryn Ch. Ranuntu, S.PM.Hum3     This research entitled “Illocutionary Act on the Interview of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs” is a pragmatic analysis focusing on speech act, especially, illocutionary act. This research is an attempt to indentify and classify types and analyze and describe functions of illocutionary act used in the Interview of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. This research is conducted by using descriptive method where the focus on this research is identifying illocutionary acts on the Interview. Furthermore, this research is done by using theory from Austin (1962) to analyze and classify those illocutionary acts according its function. The result of this research shows that there are 34 illocutionary acts found on the press conference and all the data are divided into five types of illocutionary acts and its function, such as: verdictives (declare, date, calculate, hold as metter as fact, estimate, and value), excersitives (ordering, appointing, directing, advising), commissives (declare an intention, promising, espouse, and oppose), behabitives (compliment and thank), expositives (giving a statement and giving a view).______________________________________Keywords: Pragmatic, Illocutionary Act, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Interview

Abstract

Sigarlaki, S.S M.Hum³     This research entitled "The Associative Meaning in Book of Job". The problems of this research focus on the five types of Associative Meaning, that is connotative meaning,social meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning and collective meaning and their descriptions in the Book of Job. The aims of the research are to identify, classify the verse into the five types of associative meanings, and to analyze the verses in the Book of Job using Semantics approach. This research uses descriptive method, supported by Leech's theory. In collecting data, the writer focused on reading the words, phrases, or sentences in every verse from chapter 1-42.The writer found 19 words, 8 pharases, and 17 sentences which contains the five types of associative meanings. The result of this research that the writer found that are 14 date of connotative meaning, 5 date of social meaning, 10 date of affective meaning, 5 date of reflective meaning, and 10 date of collocative meaning in the Book of Job.Keywords:Meaning, Associative Meaning, Book of Job, Descriptive Analysis.

Abstract

                                                      ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Euphemism in English and Sangirese language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the words and phrases of euphemism in English and Sangirese language and to analyze and describe the differences and the similarities of euphemism between the two languages. This research uses descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, those are preparation, data collection, and data analysis. This research uses the theories of Wardhaugh (2006:240) and Fromkin (2003:479) to find out the euphemism in English and Sangirese Language, and Lado (1957) to find out the differences and the similarities between the two languages. The English data have been collected from sociolinguistic books, articles or journals, videos, movies, and English previous researches done by student in Faculty of Humanities. Sangirese language data have been collected by interviewing some informants who are native speakers of Sangirese language. The finding shows that the differences of the categories of euphemism in both languages are: English has no categories of euphemism uses on the sea, euphemism word related to supernatural, euphemism word related to drink and food, euphemism related to human physics, euphemism word related to bathing and euphemisms related to bed, while Sangirese language has these seven things. The similarities between two languages are: English and Sangirese has euphemism words which have the same meaning, form, and function, those are euphemism word related to death, euphemism word related to unemployment, euphemism word related to criminality, euphemism word related to sex, euphemism word related to natural body function, euphemism word related to sex organs. This research expected to help the students in identifying euphemism in their languages and give knowledge to publics of what euphemism is and how important euphemism in human society.Keywords: euphemism, English and Sangirese Languages, contrastive analysis

Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Perjalanan Pahlawan Wanita seperti Terefleksi dalam Film Zootopia Produksi Clark Spencer” it is intended as a requirement to accomplish the bachelor‟s degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. Thisresearch focus on the heroine‟s journey of Judy Hopps. The purposes of this research are to identify, classify, analyze, and describe the heroine‟s journey of Judy Hopps. This research used descriptive qualitative method by Johnson (1953). In identifying, classifying the writer used theory plot by Freytag (1895) and theory of heroine‟s journey by Murdock (1990) and in analyzing the data the writer used theories of character by Eder et. al (2010) and film by Synder (2011) . The results of this research are Judy has gone through all of the stages of the heroine‟s journey. The heroine‟s journey Judy had gone through was (1) separationfrom the feminine, (2) identification with the masculine, (3) road of trials: meeting ogres and dragons, (4) finding the boon of success, (5) awakening to feelings of spiritual aridity: death, (6) initiation and descent to the Goddess, (7) urgent yearning to reconnect with the feminine, (8) healing the mother/daughter split, (9) healing the wounded masculine, (10) integration of masculine and feminine.Keywords: Heroine’s Journey, Zootopia, Character, Setting, Plot, Film

Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Taxonomy of Food and Beverage in English and Tondano Language (A Contrastive Analysis)”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the taxonomy of food and beverage, the way food and beverage are made and the basic ingredients of food and beverage in English and Tondano Language and to find out the similarities and differences in both languages. The data of food and beverage in English were collected from the text books, articles, and the website, while in Tondano Language were collected from informants and also by taking picture of foods and beverages in some wedding party, sorrow ceremony, restaurant, and traditional market. The data about foods in English and Tondano language that have been collected then identified, classified, and analyzed by using the theory of Frisch in Hickerson and the theory of Foley. Then, the data of both languages were contrasted by using Lado’s theory. The results of this research showed that in English and Tondano language, there are similarities in the food categories namely solid foods and beverages in English, and in Tondano language namely solid foods, and beverages. In English there are six kinds of solid food, such as meat, bread, fruits, vegetables, fish and sea food, but in Tondano language has five kinds of solid food, such as meat, fruits, vegetables, fish and rice. English and Tondano language has the same kinds of drinks, such as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink. The way of food and beverage in English are made: namely baking, grilling, sauteing, boiling, steaming, blending and squeeze, while in Tondano language it is tapan/panggang “grilling”, tinumis/tumis “sauteing”, ginoreng/goreng “frying”, pinera/woku “frying/grilling”, kinukus/kukus “steaming”, tinunu/bakar “baking”, and rinubus/rebus “boiling”. Food and beverage based on the basic ingredients in English are meat, fish, wheat, flour, fruits, vegetables, milk, coffee, and herbal plants, while in Tondano language are daging “meat”, ikan “fish”, sayur-sayuran “vegetables”, buah-buahan “fruits”, susu “milk”, tepung “flour”, umbi-umbian “tubers”, beras “rice”, kopi “coffee”, pohon “tree” dan daun “leaf”.Keywords: Taxonomy of Food and Beverage, English and Tondano Language, Contrastive Analysis
