Abstract

ABSTRACTS   This  research  “ Deiksis  dalam  Film The Boss  Baby  karya  Tom  McGrath”.  There  are  5  types  of  deixis,  those are:  person  deixis  (first  person,  second  person,  and  third  person),  place  deixis,  time  deixis,  discourse  deixis,  and  social  deixis.  Deixis  belongs  to  pragmatics  the  word  deixis  come  from  the  Greek  deiktikos,  it‟s  means,  „pointing‟.  The  objective  of  this  research  are  to  identify  and  classify  the  types  of  deixis  and  to  analyze  the  usage  of  deixis  in  the  film  The  Boss  Baby  by  Tom  McGrath.  The  method  used  in  this  research  is  descriptive  method.  The  data  are  identified,  classified  and  analyzed  descriptively.  The  data  were  analyzed  based  on  Levinson  theory.  The  result  shows  that  there  are  five  types  of  deixis  in  the  film  The  Boss  Baby,  those  are  person  (first  person: I,  me,  our,  we,  and  my;  second  person: your  and  you;  third  person:  he,  him,  they,  and  them),  place  deixis:  here,  house,  over  here  and  where,  time  deixis:  time,  Monday,  07.00  A.M,  now,  weeks,  ever,  faster,  years  ago,  days,  Friday,  and  long  time  ago,  discourse  deixis:  this,  that,  and  this,  and  social  deixis:  brother,  ma‟am,  mom,  dad,  sir,  big  boss  baby,  mr.  lady  man,  boss,  and  ladies,  wheares  the  usage  of  deixis  found  in  the  film  are  symbol  and  gestural  usage.  It  is  expected  that  this  research  will  help  the  students  and  the  other  readers  to  learn  the  pragmatics  aspects,  especially  about  deixis. Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this study is “The Use of Phrasal Verbs by the Students of SMA Negeri 2 Manado”. The main object of this study is the use of phrasal verbs by the XI grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Manado (Mathematics and Natural Sciences class). The method that has been applied by the writer in this research is descriptive method which has been done in several stages: preparation was made by reading the theory about phrasal verbs and goingto the school to get a picture of the English curriculum. Data collection was taken from 40 students of SMA Negeri 2 Manado, by giving them tests containing phrasal verbs. They are multiple choice, fill in the blank and true or false. The indentified data were analyzed by using simple statistic and qualitative method based on Furchon (1982). The result of the test is described by using some tables. The result of the analysis shows that the student’s difficulty in using phrasal verbs is high; that is only 36.8% of the students have right answer while 63.2% have wrong answer. The difficulty is caused by the misunderstanding of the meaning of phrasal verbs. Some of the students do not understand what the phrasal verbs are and how to use phrasal verbs in a sentences due to the minimum teaching of phrasal verbs in SMA Negeri 2 Manado.   Key words : phrasal verb, students, misunderstanding, use, presentage

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is aimed to identify, classify, and analyze the symbols in Tea Ceremony of Chinese Ethnic Marriage in Manado. The data were collected by getting some information from informants. The identification and classification of the data are based on Peirce theory about semiotics in this case symbol, and the analysis used is descriptive method using Leech’s meaning theory. The problems in this research what the verbal and non-verbal symbols are and what the meanings of those symbols in Tea Ceremony of Chinese Ethnic Marriage in Manado are. The result of the research show that there are 14 symbols such as character symbol, word symbol, sentence symbol, color symbol, tea symbol, dragon and phoenix symbol, peony flower  symbol, angpao symbol (red envelope symbol), two cups on the tray symbol, the respect symbol, giving the tea symbol, drink the tea together symbol, giving the angpao (red envelope) symbol, and giving the jewelry symbol. These symbols include verbal and non-verbal symbol and the meanings of these symbols are conseptual meaning and connotative meaning.   Keywords: Symbols, Verbal and Non-Verbal Symbols, Conseptual and Connotative      Meaning.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Semiotics is a study about signs. Symbols is a part of sign which can be found in some different forms such as verbal or nonverbal, written or unwritten. They can be anything that convey meaning such as words on papers, pictures, drawings, and gestures. In this research, the writer takes the symbols used by heavy metal bands as the object of research. The purpose of the research is to identify and analyze the symbols used by the heavy metal bands as one of the sign systems from the semiotics point of view. The aspects of research which are related to the sign systems proposed by Peirce are icon, index and symbol. Symbols also can be found in some musical genres for example the heavy metal music. In this category, symbols are used by the heavy metal bands as their own identity.The collected data about semiotics and Peirce theory of signs were collected from some books of semiotics while the data about the heavy metal bands and their symbols are collected from the websites. All the collected data are analyzed based on Peirce theory of signs, and the method used is descriptive method. The results of this research show that there are four main subgenres of heavy metal and each genre has its own form of the symbols. The form of the symbols illustrate the musical genre that they play and also representate the lyrical themes of their songs each other.   Keywords: Semiotics, Symbols, Heavy Metal, Symbols of the Heavy Metal bands

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research which is entitled “Perdagangan Manusia dalam novel Sold karya Patricia McCormick.” focuses on the theme of the novel that describes about human trafficking. The writer chooses this interesting novel as this novel is one of the McCormick’s works which becomes a National Book Award finalist. The purpose of this study is to identify and categorize the types of human trafficking depicted in the novel. Through this research, the community is expected to know the types of human trafficking and can avoid becoming a victim of human trafficking. The writer uses the intrinsic approach to gain understanding through the plot of the novel and the extrinsic approach to analyze the novel that from social perspective. This research uses the theory from Wellek and Warren (1949), in their book, The Theory of Literature. According to them, literary works are social documents, which reflect a picture of social reality. The result of this research shows that there are many types of human trafficking, reflected through the plot and characters of the novel. Those types are Bonded Labor, Debt Bondage Among Migrant Laborers, Forced Labor, Forced Child Labor, Sex Trafficking, Child Sex Trafficking.   Keywords : Novel, Plot, Human Trafficking, Patricia McCormick

Abstract

ABSTRACT This researchentitled “Illocutionary Act in the Film The Change-Up by David Dobkin: A Pragmatic Analysis”. It is an analysis of  pragmatic investigation that focus on one aspect of speech acts called illocutionary act. It is an attempt to find the kinds and functions of illocutionary act in the film. The data have been taken from the characters utterances’ in the film. The writer analyzed the data descriptively by concentrating on utterances which contain illocution. The theory used in this research is taken from Searle’s theory about illocutionary acts’ classification. The findings of this research show that the kinds and functions of the illocutionary act are found in the film “The Change-Up”. It is classified into five categories, those are assertives: stating, suggesting, vowing and reporting; directives: ordering, commending, requesting, and advising; commissives: promising and offering; expressive: thanking, praising, and blaming; declarations: naming, suspending, and declaring. Theoretically, the writer extends that this research can give any contribution for students or readers to understand kinds of  illocutionary act and their functionsare not only in this film, but also in other literary works especially in daily communication. Abstract

ABSTRACT This Research is an attempt to identify and analyze the perlocutionary act in Coldplay hit song lyrics. The collected data have been identified by using Leech’s concept about the kind of the aspect of perlocutionary act and then analyzed them descriptively in terms of how the aspect of perlocutionary acts revealed by the speaker in the songs. The method which is used in this research is descriptive method. In collect data, the writer focused on identifying the aspect of perlocutionary act found in each lyrics of the songs. The Result shows that in terms of identified and analyzed the aspect of perlocutionary act. The writer found some aspect of perlocutionary act such as, bring hearer to know, persuade, amuse, get the hearer to do, and get the the hearer to think wheres the other aspect of perlocutioary act such as encourage, irritate, and relieve tension did not find in Coldplays hit songs lyrics.   Key words : Perlocutionary Aspect, Hit Songs of Coldplay, Pragmatic Studi

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The title of this research is "Personal Pronouns in The Novel The Collector by the John Fowles". The objectives of this research are to identify, to classification and to analyze the form of personal pronouns.  The data are collected by focusing on the writer presents her novel by using personal pronouns. the theory  used in this research is taken from Frank (1972). The problem of the research: what are the personal pronouns in term of form and function in the novel The Collector by John Fowles. I, she, we, they can be subjects of a verb. Example : I saw it. He knows you. They live near here. Coplements of the verb to be : example it is I. Me, him, her, us, them can be direct objects of a verb. Example : I saw her. Tom likes them. Those concepts above will be used for identifying and analyzing data.  The result shows that the forms of personal pronouns are found in the novel The Collector by John Fowles. The result shows that there are personal pronouns is a word used in the place of a noun either persons or things. The function of perosnal pronoun is a subject, object possessive adjective and possessive in the sentence.   Keywords : Personal Pronouns, Novel : The Collector

Abstract

ABSTRAKTION In dieser Untersuchung wird die inneren Strukturelemente der einigen Poesien in der Antologinpoesie Jakarta-Berlin, bzw.“Die Steinerne Stadt” von Ernst Schur, “An Jakarta” von Ajip Rosidi, “Berlin” von Christian Morgenstern, und “Jakarta” von Arifin C Noer beschreiben. Inneren Strukturelemente der Poesien besteht aus Thema, Ton, Gefühl und Auftrag. Als die Theoretische Grundlage wird die Meinugen von Richards, die von Djojosuroto zitiert wird. Um diese Poesien zu analysieren werden sowohl deskriptive Methode als auch innerliche Ansätze angewendet. Als Schluβfolgerung dieser Untersuchung kann es gesagt werden, daβ: die Themen der vier Poesien, nähmlich: Die Steinerne Stadt von Ersnt Schur behandelt um ein Sozialsleben in Berlin; An Jakarta von Ajip Rosidi behandelt um ein Sozialsleben in Jakarta; Berlinvon Christian Morgenstern behandelt um eine Situation in Berlin am Tag und Nacht; Jakarta von Arifin C Noer behandelt um ein Leben in Jakarta, das individualistisch ist. Die Diskution über die Tone der vier Poesien kann es dargestellen, daβ: die Erste ist eine Klage gegen die Situation in Berlin, wo die Leuten einander hassen; die Zweite ist eine Klage gegen die Situation in Jakarta, wo die Leuten der Malaria versteckt hätten; die Dritte ist eine Klage gegen die Situation in Berlin am Tag, wo es einen Chaos passiert ist; die Vierte ist eine Satire gegen die Gesselschaft in Jakarta, wo die Leuten nicht mehr zueinander wertschäzen. Die Interprätation über das Gefühl der vier Poesien kann es dargestellen, daβ: die Erste beschreibt ein Leben, das unzufrieden in Berlin ist und eine Begrenzung hat; die Zweite beschreibt die Situation in Jakarta, die es den Hass und die Liebe gibt; die Dritte beschreibt die Liebe, die die Schonheit bei Nebel und bei Nacht in Berlin beton; die Vierte beschreibt den Mitleid für die verlassene Leiche und davon begräbt man nicht würdig. Die Interprätation über den Auftrag der vier Poesien kann es dargestellen, daβ: die Erste zeigt: Im Leben musst man die Liebe haben, weil die Liebe groβe Rolle in Leben hat; die Zweite zeigt: man musst die Wohnort hat, obwohl es nicht alles liebevoll ist; die Dritte zeigt: Im Leben musst man kämpfen, obwohl die Situation nicht mit unserem Leben versteht; die Vierte zeigt: Im Leben musst man nicht individualismus hat, sondern musst man miteinander respektieren. Die Schlüβwörter: Untersuchung, Interprätation, Sozialsleben.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this study is “Perubahan Bunyi Dalam Soneta Shakespeare ke Bahasa Inggris Modern”. The purpose is intended to give explanation about the sound changing from Early Modern English (in this case, Shakespeare’s sonnet) to Modern English. The objectives of this research are to identify, analyze, and explain the sound changing from Shakespeare’s sonnets to Modern English. The research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research: Preparation, Data Collection, and Data Analysis. The data were taken through the sonnets of William Shakespeare. Ten sonnets had been selected to be identified. Theory of Campbell  (1999: 31-42) is used to analyze the data. The result of this research shows that there are six kinds of sound changes. Those are palatalisation, non palatalisation, strenghtening, weakening, centering vowel, and apocope.   Keywords: Early Modern English, sonnet, Shakespeare, sound change, Modern English
