Abstract

This present research applied mixed methods research. The design of the research was sequential design. Population in this research was 94 students of the 6th semester of English Department in the State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Ponorogo. Since it applied population sampling technique, the number of sample was the same as the number of population. The researcher employed questionnaires, documentation, observation and in-depth interview as data collection technique. Since the hypothesis is intended to find the effect of students’ learning styles and their perception of blended learning on learning outcomes, the Simple Linier Regression by using SPSS 19.00 for Windows was applied. The second phase, the result of observation and in-depth interview were analyzed by Miles and Huberman’s view of qualitative data analysis consisting of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The findings showed that there is a significant effect of students’ learning style and their perception of blended learning on learning outcomes and the equation regression is Y = 76.784 + 0.595X1 + 0.312X. During the implementation, the lecturer adapted various models of blended learning for boosting students’ learning outcomes. Lecturer mixes the use of online and offline interaction in the teaching and learning process. It relates to the concept of Blended learning which integrate face-to-face and virtual learning environment. Students are given opportunity to convey their idea online through Edmodo platform, email and blog as well as communicating and discussing particular issues by face-to-face interaction with their classmates and lecturer.

Abstract

The emergence of cultural awareness in current English teaching process especially in Indonesian context is becoming a crucial issue since the paradigm of English teaching has shifted to English as an International Language (EIL). Thus, textbook as a primary source of teaching material should be designed accordingly. The content should provide not only knowledge on language but also cultural elements (source culture, target culture, and international culture). Therefore, this study investigates culture-related content in English textbooks for secondary school published by The Ministry of Education in Indonesia through content analysis by using ‘cultural dimensions’ and ‘cultural categories’ frameworks. The result shows with regard to cultural dimensions, the English textbook includes all five cultural dimensions and cultural categories.

Abstract

English around the world is spoken in a multitude of accents, and this includes spoken Standard English. Yet, in some ELT contexts, there is still a fixation with using a native model of pronunciation. Such targets do not tend to take into consideration local English pronunciation features. This leads to either the teaching of English pronunciation being largely ignored in the classroom, or in teachers attempting to teach features that students are unlikely to hear in the local contexts. In this paper, I will explore some of the features of pronunciation in Malaysian English, and show how these do not align with the curriculum specifications for pronunciation. I will then discuss how teachers in other ELT contexts can deal with these issues in the classroom.

Abstract

Literacy has been of vital importance in learning in a foreign language, and lots of research have been conducted to investigate the importance of reading comprehension; however, studies on this dealing with gender are limited. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to examine the relationship among reading attitude, reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension of EFL tertiary students based on gender difference. A convenient sampling is used to draw data from 208 respondents ranging form the age of 19 to 24 years old using questionnaires and a reading comprehension test. This is a correlational study (Creswell, 2008) employing a multi-group path analysis. The result of analysis showed a pattern of relationships based on gender difference among reading attitude, reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension. The study has significant impacts for EFL reading comprehension by showing prediction of EFL reading comprehension achievement from reading self-efficacy and reading attitude on the basis of gender difference.
