The second phase, the result of observation and in-depth interview were analyzed by Miles and Hubermanâs view of qualitative data analysis consisting of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The findings showed that there is a significant effect of studentsâ learning style and their perception of blended learning on learning outcomes and the equation regression is Y = 76.784 + 0.595X1 + 0.312X. During the implementation, the lecturer adapted various models of blended learning for boosting studentsâ learning outcomes. Lecturer mixes the use of online and offline interaction in the teaching and learning process. It relates to the concept of Blended learning which integrate face-to-face and virtual learning environment. The emergence of cultural awareness in current English teaching process especially in Indonesian context is becoming a crucial issue since the paradigm of English teaching has shifted to English as an International Language (EIL). Thus, textbook as a primary source of teaching material should be designed accordingly. The content should provide not only knowledge on language but also cultural elements (source culture, target culture, and international culture). Therefore, this study investigates culture-related content in English textbooks for secondary school published by The Ministry of Education in Indonesia through content analysis by using âcultural dimensionsâ and âcultural categoriesâ frameworks. The result shows with regard to cultural dimensions, the English textbook includes all five cultural dimensions and cultural categories.

English around the world is spoken in a multitude of accents, and this includes spoken Standard English. Yet, in some ELT contexts, there is still a fixation with using a native model of pronunciation. Such targets do not tend to take into consideration local English pronunciation features. This leads to either the teaching of English pronunciation being largely ignored in the classroom, or in teachers attempting to teach features that students are unlikely to hear in the local contexts. In this paper, I will explore some of the features of pronunciation in Malaysian English, and show how these do not align with the curriculum specifications for pronunciation. I will then discuss how teachers in other ELT contexts can deal with these issues in the classroom.

Literacy has been of vital importance in learning in a foreign language, and lots of research have been conducted to investigate the importance of reading comprehension; however, studies on this dealing with gender are limited. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to examine the relationship among reading attitude, reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension of EFL tertiary students based on gender difference. A convenient sampling is used to draw data from 208 respondents ranging form the age of 19 to 24 years old using questionnaires and a reading comprehension test. This is a correlational study (Creswell, 2008) employing a multi-group path analysis. The result of analysis showed a pattern of relationships based on gender difference among reading attitude, reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension. The study has significant impacts for EFL reading comprehension by showing prediction of EFL reading comprehension achievement from reading self-efficacy and reading attitude on the basis of gender difference.Â

Learning English as a foreign language has always been a challenge for many learners in Indonesia. In the past, learning English in classrooms might not be as interesting and varied as it is now. Thus, this research aimed at describing adult learners’ perception on learning English and their experience when learning it during school. The participants of this research were 15 school staff, aged 20 to 50 years old, who were taking English course for employees at the time. Under qualitative research, the researcher used close-ended questionnaire, field-note, and documentation as the research instruments to collect the data from the participants. Some simple statistics was used only to find out the salient patterns from the data which would later be explained descriptively. The findings indicated that despite the participants being interested in learning English, they really had a hard time learning it and went through such monotonous English teaching and learning in the past. This research also managed to expose the participants’ difficulties in composing simple sentences orally and in writing. Although the generalization could not be simply made from this research, the result of the research demonstrated some problems in English language learning at school which made learners could not perform the language on an ongoing basis.

The surge in the use of English has escalated in the higher education sector due to the drive of advancing university ranking world-wide. Major universities from expanding circle countries, including Indonesia, are motivated to send their academic staff and students for short-term mobility programs organized by top world-class universities which are normally situated in inner-circle countries, as faculty and student mobility is essential for developing international quality education. Standardized English proficiency tests are the tools for selecting candidates, as native speaker’s English is still regarded as the norm for lingua academica. Therefore, those who receive the access for mobility are always the same people who have already received some academic experiences overseas. With this in mind, we need to challenge the ideology of native speakerism and start embracing the concept of multilinguality. Yet, this is not an easy task to change the deep-rooted ideology. Forty-nine out of 57 college students (82%) of a reputable English Department in Indonesia, for example, still believed in native speaker standards, although they were aware that they could not attain them. In fact, based on socio-psychological and neurobiological evidence, multilinguality unnecessarily impairs intelligibility.
