Abstract

Understanding cross-cultural communication is an important aspect of determining the success of communication. Understanding cross-cultural communication is the key to the success of communication (Griffin, 2010). Differences in cultural value orientation also cause differences in cross-cultural communication. What is considered good or bad behaviour, appropriate or inappropriate, polite or impolite in one culture is often perceived as different or contradictory to other cultures. This paper discusses cross-cultural understanding for international students regarding salutations and cultural expressions in the Indonesian language from a sociolinguistics point of view. This research uses a descriptive method. The data collection technique was done virtually by interviewing and filling out questionnaires. By applying the theory of Gudykunst (2003) and Gudykunst and Ting-Toomey (in Jati, 2013), this study quantitatively tested the impact of culture on direct and indirect communication. There are so many theories that discuss the differentiating factors in the emergence of cross-cultural communication. (Liliweri, 2009) explains that several systems cause differences in cross-cultural communication. The study results reveal that cultural expressions should consider cultural aspects in addressing people in certain cultures. The aspects emerge in the stratification of people in society by politely addressing them for those who are respected. They can give titles when addressing them in their equality, the same status, the same position, and other cultural perspectives. The use of the title Bapak/Pak, Ibu/Bu, Mbak, Mas, Adik/Dik, and Kakak/Kak need the students' cultural knowledge. Moreover, the study indicates how international students in Indonesian academic settings should understand implicit cultural expressions such as mau ke mana, dari mana, and apa kabar. Those expressions tend to be understood not only linguistically but also culturally.

Abstract

The body of women in the modern fashion world is now not only present in the form of a subject, but also becomes an object. The female body has become a very exploitative realm for the modern fashion world. The movement as a tool to dismantle the old interpretation of something that is unfair because of the patriarchal culture, is the feminism movement. Women are still discriminated against and do not have the same rights as men for their private bodies. The awareness that women have today is a false consciousness, which in practice makes women feel ownership of their own bodies, can proudly show off their curves during fashion shows, photoshoots and so on. In fact, there is no awareness at all, what is protected here are not people who are proud to show off their bodies, no. However, what is defended from this research is the bodies of women so that there are no sexual crimes that are accepted by women. The data obtained were then processed with a qualitative descriptive approach with the subject of this study being the female body capital in the world of modern fashion. The theory used is the theory of Marxist feminism. The research uses hermeneutics which will interpret, provide understanding, and translate the capital of the female body in the world of modern fashion. While the validity of the data with data triangulation as a technique of checking the validity of the data that utilizes something other than the data for the purpose of checking or comparing the data.

Abstract

Gender equality in modern society today is still hindered by stereotypes regarding the roles and positions of men and women. Gender is a view or belief formed by society about how a woman or man should behave or think. In society the role of life is dominated more by the role of men and in public life under their authority is women. In the Qur'an surah Al-Isra verse 70 which reads that Allah Almighty has created human beings ie men and women in the best form with the most honorable position. The method that will be used is to use a quality approach to be able to obtain data on the benefits of gender relations in Islam more than just regulating gender justice in society, but theologically regulating the pattern of microcosm (human), macrosrosmos (nature) , and God relations. Islam came to give an important position in both the law and the same rights as men, so that there is no discrimination for women. The problem that exists today is that there are differences in views on the position and perspective of women in the educational environment where there are some opinions that say that Women are very dependent on men, so that currently the issue of women leaders in the world of education provides a complete picture of their position, political rights, professional employment opportunities have nothing to do with religious values, only there are still differences between scholars, community leaders and the community itself[1], this finally proves that there is no gender bias in the world of education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of time in Javanese culture through the existence of the character Bathara Kala in the wayang kulit play Ruwat Murwakala and its influence on people's attitudes and habits in living daily life. The concept of time affects the cognitive processes in a person and subsequently has an impact on his reasoning. This will then also affect his behavior and character. In contrast to the western perspective, eastern people, including Indonesia, have a different perception of time. Javanese people have their own view of time. This can be seen from social attitudes, spiritual attitudes and attitudes towards what was being faced yesterday, today, and tomorrow. The semiotic perspective was chosen to analyze the data obtained through literature study techniques, interviews, direct observation and documentation. The results of this study shows that the Javanese concept and perception of time reflected through the character of Bathara Kala in ruwatan murwakala has an impact on the behavior and habits of everyday people. The influence is, among others, through a metaphor for time, for example the word "sesuk (tomorrow)" does not always mean the day after today, but can also mean the day after tomorrow or some time in the future. In addition, the Javanese view of time also has an impact on the way Javanese people respond to important events by looking for "sangat" or good days because it is based on the understanding that the fate and fortune of human life are in absolute terms of the circle of time so that it must adjust to good momentum on that round of time.

Abstract

The words "menolak" and "menerima" in the Indonesian language have almost the same meaning. In linguistics, it is ordained that every word has a meaning, synonymous words can and cannot replace each other, and words can potentially be legal cases. Therefore,it is necessary to study how to use the two words and the impact caused by their use. Besides, it is important to know why it is required to understand the meaning of both words. To answer the problems, the researchers conduct a forensic linguistic study with descriptive analysis with Systemic Functional Linguistic theory. The data of this research is the use of the two words taken from news texts in the mass media in the network. In this article, the analysis of the use of words is in some fields: health, politics, law, economics, and in culture. The research results for "declining" and "returning" reveal three findings. Firstly, the use of the two words cannot replace each other. Secondly, the impact caused by using the two words is the form and the parties involved. Thirdly, there is a reason for the need to understand the use of the two words. Therefore, no language use cases lead to the realm of law.

Abstract

Sociology of literature is like an imitation, to see the real situation and social phenomena that occur. in the imaginative world, there are always events in the real world that then become part of the storytelling. Literature then blends and blends between real events and fictional events. With existing innovations, hidden realities can be brought back. The object of this research is a novel entitled "Selamat Tinggal”. This novel tells about Sintong, a student who works as a keeper of a pirated bookstore: "Berkah". Sintong is a graduate student from the faculty of literature. Ideally, he does not agree with his work as a mediator for pirated books to be sold. But conditionally, only selling pirated books, Sintong can continue her studies. Understandably, he is an overseas child who has not received any money from his parents. Even guarding a bootleg shop next to the station, because the owner of the blessing shop is his own Paklik. This research method is a qualitative research method. According to Moleong, for this qualitative research to understand the phenomena of what is experienced by the research subject, for example, perceptual behavior, motivation, action and others holistically, and by way of description in the form of words and language, in a special context that is natural and by utilizing various natural methods. With this the data presented in this study are in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and the context of the story in the novel. This qualitative descriptive research is descriptive and analyzes the problems contained in the novel objectively. This study is to compare the fictional events in the novel with the reality that occurs in the real world. One example that is closest to us is students who prefer to buy pirated books rather than original books. Of course, the advantage of pirated books is that they are much cheaper than original books. The student's mediocre economic situation supports this. Sintong even when selling pirated books, has a lot of subscribers who are among students. The name of the pirated bookstore is "Berkah". This becomes a kind of satire by the author towards the world of piracy. The word blessing has a positive connotation, meaning "a lot of good". This is because the market share of pirated books is the weak economy. The goal is that ordinary people can get a lot of good from reading pirated books. Of course, the hijacked books are the “best sellers”, which have a lot of good in them. But this is actually satire. Sintong himself realized that "there is no blessing in stealing". Sintong is well aware that book piracy is a crime that is prohibited by law. But until now, the law that was at the beginning of the book has only been a decoration because no one has ever been prosecuted for pirating a book. Sintong himself is a writer. He wrote his thoughts in the mass media. He knows very well that pirated books are stealing the writer's fortune. The writer does not get a penny of money from the results of his hard work writing. The ones who get a lot of material benefits from pirated books are the producers. He simply reproduced what was already there, without ever paying for writers, cover designs, editors, lay outs, distributors and others. Just simply copy what is already there, then sell it for less than half the price of the original book. Of course that was enough profit.
