Tell : Teaching of English Language and Literature Journal (e-ISSN 2657-2443 and p-ISSN: 2338-8927) is a journal of English Language Teaching (ELT), linguistics, and literature published in April and September by English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. This journal is committed to investigate and scrutinize present issues of ELT, linguistics and literature. Contributions in the forms of research-based and literature-review studies written by national and international scholars and researchers are welcomed. High quality of studies presenting the State of the Art (SOTA) and originality is preferable.

As far as the researcher’s knowledge, the research of “The Effectiveness of Making Short Film for Students’ Speaking Ability†is still difficult to find, the researcher formulates the statement of the research, Making Short film is effective for students’ speaking ability and the objective of research is to find out whether making short film can effective for students’ speaking ability. This research uses experimental design and quantitative method, it is suitable with this research. The subjects are eighth graders of VIIIA as control class and VIIIc as experimental class at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Gadung Surabaya. The data collection uses test, post-test only design as intrument to count the compaired score of the difference classes. The result of post test score is counted using SPSS 1.6 Software to know the significant different between control and experimental class. Based on the last counted, the researcher count T-test to know the effectiveness of making short film for students’ speaking ability and Eta-square to know the effect size of T-test result. T-test result was shown significance between those classes from Equality of variances test is 0.000, whereas P-value is more than 0,05 or P-value > α (0.05), so H0 is pushed away. So, the ability of those classes is difference. The result of Eta-square was shown 0.40 which is higher than 0.14. It means the result is very high because 0.40 was exceed the aspect scale 0.14 is large effect. After counted done, making short film proven effective for students’ speaking ability.

The analysis provides the study about figure of speech, possible meaning and the total meaning in three poem’s of Emily Dickinson “success is counted sweetestâ€, “ I had no time to hateâ€, Have you got a Brook in your little heartâ€, This study tries to analyze figure of speech, possible meaning and the total meaning in statement of the problem. This analysis aims to analyze the types of figure of speech and possible meaning and to tell the total meaning of the Emily Dickinson poem’s. This analysis explains the design of qualitative method because it is related to the object of research. Qualitative description defines as research designed to produce a low inference description of a phenomenon that draws from discourse. The result of the research of the first poem “success is counted sweetest†figure of speech are Metaphor, Hyperbole, symbol, the second “ I had no time to hate†, the figure of speech is personification, Symbol. The last poem “Have you got a Brook in your little heart†figure of speech is personification, allegory.

The researcher analyzed power relation in film “The Judge†by using theory of CDA in interpreting hidden meaning of words. CDA was a theory that study about the relation between the social life and talk in interaction. The approach of this research was CDA’s van Dijk as it became the most appropriate theory to analyze since grammar, metaphor, intonation, social cognition and societal structures were included. In this research, descriptive qualitative was applied to analyze the data. “The Judge†film script was used as the source of data. The researcher focused on the main character’s words which contain power in the social relation especially in court. Some powers had been found in this research, there were power as control and threat that main characters used in building their conversation. In this research, main characters used power in the community because they wanted to dominate the conversation.

This research explored the possible meaning of the metaphor in the poem of Maya Angelou. The researcher focused on metaphor forms found as the object to be analyzed in Maya Angelou’s poems. Metaphor is one part of figurative languages which is the most common and widely used in literary works such as poem. Poem is a media for a poet to express feeling and imagination based on condition of a poet’s life. The data of this research were Caged Bird and Still I Rise poems by Maya Angelou. This research used descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The purpose of this research was to find out the type of metaphor based on Crystal, Lakoff and Johnson theory, know the reasons of the use of metaphor, and interpret the poem meaning based on explication and author’s biography. It was found that Maya Angelou used three types of live metaphor they are Conceptual metaphor, Mixed metaphor and Poetic metaphor. It was also found that each poem tells about the author’s personal opinion about the racial inequality between black races and white races in America at that time.

The aim of this research is to investigate types of illocutionary acts used by main characters in Wild Child and the purpose of illocutionary acts. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method since she describes the phenomena of illocutionary act used by Poppy and Kate. The researcher uses the script of Wild Child movie as the data source to be analyzed and the researcher took some internet references and books as the supporting data for analyzing and discovering the types of illocutionary acts in this movie. This research found four types of illocutionary acts. There are representative, directive, expressive, and commisive. This research did not found illocutionary acts of declarative. The most of utterance used by Poppy and Kate is directive utterance. The purpose of illocutionary acts is to get someone to do something.

People in different countries have their own methods on how they imitate the sounds of the same animals. The real example is that Englishmen imitate the sound of cat as /miËˈaÊŠ/. On the other hand, Indonesians imitate the sound of the same cat as /meɔŋ/. Those sound, in term of linguistics, are considered as onomatopoeic words. This study is about animal onomatopoeic word where the objective of the study is to find both the similarities and differences between how Englishmen and Indonesians imitate the sound of the same animal in term of phonetic features. To achieve the objective of the study, the writer compiles list of twenty animal onomatopoeic words both from English and Indonesian languages. Then the sounds are analyzed in terms of phonetic and phonological theories. As the result, there are similarities as well as differences in both consonants and vowels.
