"SANGKHAKALA" refers to the shell horns that blown regularly to convey certain messages. In accordance with the meaning, this journal expected to become an instrument in the dissemination of archaeological information to the public which is published on an ongoing basis. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala is a peer-reviewed journal published biannual by the Balai Arkeologi Sumatera Utara in May and November. The first edition was published in 1997 and began to be published online in an e-journal form using the Open Journal System tool in 2015. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala aims to publish research papers, reviews and studies covering the disciplines of archeology, anthropology, history, ethnography, and culture in general.

AbstractDeureuham of Samudera Pasai Kingdom is one of the fact of the past in line with commercial activity, especially in commercial maritime around the eastern coast of Northern Sumatera. As one of the official exchange rate at that time, deureuham of pasai inspired coinage in the Islam Kingdom in Malay Peninsula.

Abstract

AbstractStory’s relief is a combination of narrative and visual art which function as a communication media for people in the past. It moreover consists of social culture information, story’s relief has also left tracks of the methode of an artist for framing the story in visual form. One thing that insteresting in this regard is time dimension visualization. Time dimension is extremely difficult visualized in the form of images without any information in the form of the verbal. Yet, the artist of the past were able to overcome these problems by way of a typical visualization without including any verbal information.

AbstractMalay tribe generally erected colonnaded building or storeyed house, including those who live in Medan. Storeyed houses located in Medan were partly built in colonial period (end of 19th century) to early independences (mid of 20th century). Construction of the building and its ridge shape are highly varied.

Abstract

AbstractThe mention of the name of Pāndai is rarely to be found in an inscription without any mention of the name of a king, royal official or a person who receives the inscription. His ability in mastering bilingual and expertise in making a statue Lokanātha, which is an important figure in Buddhism, not make an ordinary pāndai. He is mentioned in the inscription by the name of Suryya. In Mandailing society, Suryya is associated with their ancestors named Namora Pande Bosi.

AbstractIn relation to death, the burial is one of the procession of the human life cycle for every culture. Therefore, the procession of death have a very important role with the special treatment of the deceased. Abstract

AbstractIn Central of Aceh, there were an indications of the use of cave and rock shelter as a prehistoric settlement site. Indications of prehistoric settlement site was found among others in Loyang Mendali, Loyang Koro, Loyang Datu and also in Putri Pukes. To prove that indication, further research has been done with the excavation of the cave and rock shelter. Therefore, Balai Arkeologi Medan did the excavation in one of the cave, Loyang Mendali and obtained some data that provided an initial description on prehistoric settelment in Central Aceh.

Abstract

AbstractRock shelter and cave and also its karst environment are natural resources for the benefit of human life from the past until now. In the past, human has exploited natural resources for various purposes. Remains of past human activities at these sites are cultural resources that object of an archaeology research. The natural resources consisting in the archaeological sites is also exploited by human for a variety of other interests that conflict of interest occurs.

AbstractDecorative menhir is one of archeological remains in West Sumatra that consists of various forms and sizes. Some decorative motifs are still exist till now, and used as traditional decorative motif of Minangkabau songket weaving.
