"SANGKHAKALA" refers to the shell horns that blown regularly to convey certain messages. In accordance with the meaning, this journal expected to become an instrument in the dissemination of archaeological information to the public which is published on an ongoing basis. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala is a peer-reviewed journal published biannual by the Balai Arkeologi Sumatera Utara in May and November. The first edition was published in 1997 and began to be published online in an e-journal form using the Open Journal System tool in 2015. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala aims to publish research papers, reviews and studies covering the disciplines of archeology, anthropology, history, ethnography, and culture in general.

Abstract

Actually, Batu Sindu was an important site that was known throughfolktales and beautiful view. As the condition of the environment, BatuSindu was a dwelling site, and it also indicated as a neolitic site as thefinding of earthenware fragments, square adze and grindingstone.

Abstract

“Mangongkal holi” is the megalithic tradition which is one theprocession of funeral rites in Batak community. It‟s the form ofsecondary burial with digging the skeleton and moved it from primaryburial into the secondary ones. Considering that some of the Batakcommunity who held this activity is Christianity, so “mangokal holi” riteswas influenced by this religion.

Abstract

We had know that there‟re lots of landfort in Sumatera. Theobservation indicated that they have been built since the Hindoo-Buddhist era continued on the Islam era till the colonialism ofNetherland. That landfort represented the different era and alsothe function it self, but the essence of it is as a fort area.

Abstract

Tehembowo is one of the Megalithic statue which be located inHili Gowe Sites. This statue indicated that there was a fondrako,that is a ceremony of the legalization of custom regulation inSisarahili and around the village. Besides that, the statue has adeep meaning and function related to Nias community social life.

Padang Lawas is one of some sites from Hindoo-Buddhist period inNorth Sumatra. Abstract

Settlement in Lau Simomo, Tanah Karo described the human historyregarding the residential area for lepers. The building of this areasupported the lepers in order to get a reasonably comfortable life. Theother facilities which part of the important things for treatment ofleprosy or character building are hospital and church.
