Abstract

This research aims to determine the influence of age, length of work, formal education, income, remittances, number of dependents, marital status, determinants of money use, employment sector, informal education, and gender on the savings of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) both partially and simultaneously. This quantitative study uses primary data collected through interviews and questionnaires, with a sample of 100 post-placement PMI individuals from Kulon Progo Regency. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to evaluate the data. The t-test results indicate that age and income have a positive and significant effect on PMI savings, whereas length of work and remittances show a negative and significant impact. Formal education and the number of dependents exhibit a positive but insignificant relationship with PMI savings. Furthermore, the dummy variables for marital status, determinants of money use, employment sector, informal education, and gender do not significantly affect PMI savings, indicating no difference between the dummy categories. The F test reveals that all variables combined—age, length of work, formal education, income, remittances, number of dependents, marital status, determinants of money use, employment sector, informal education, and gender—significantly impact PMI savings.

Abstract

Cultural poverty in developing societies often emerges from adherence to traditional practices that impose significant economic burdens on communities. In Batak Toba society, the sinamot (bride price) tradition has evolved from a symbolic gesture of respect into a status marker, creating substantial financial pressures on families. While culturally significant within the dalihan na tolu kinship system, contemporary sinamot practices frequently exceed families' economic capabilities, potentially perpetuating cycles of poverty. This study examines how the sinamot tradition contributes to cultural poverty formation in Batak Toba communities and explores community perceptions regarding this phenomenon. The research contributes to understanding cultural poverty as a product of culturally sanctioned practices rather than character deficiencies, offering insights for developing culturally sensitive poverty alleviation approaches. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach, conducting in-depth interviews with seven informants including married couples, parents, and traditional leaders aged 40-65 years, with data analyzed using NVivo 12 Pro software following Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The findings reveal that sinamot functions dually as both a symbol of honor (hasangapon) and an economic burden, with three primary mechanisms driving cultural poverty: social pressure to maintain high sinamot values as markers of family status, consumerist tendencies in wedding celebrations where families host grand events beyond their means, and compliance with traditional values motivated by fear of social sanctions. Sinamot amounts vary significantly based on bride's education level, ranging from IDR 10-15 million for high school graduates to IDR 20-150 million for master's degree holders, excluding additional celebration costs. Families frequently incur debts requiring two to three years to repay, limiting investments in education, health, and productive endeavors. The study identifies emerging shifts among younger generations adopting more realistic attitudes toward sinamot while maintaining cultural respect, and some traditional communities have begun simplifying ceremonial requirements. Theoretically, through Baudrillard's consumerism theory and Bourdieu's symbolic capital concept, traditional celebrations have transformed into arenas for symbolic consumption serving as social signifiers rather than authentic cultural expressions. Cultural poverty in Batak society emerges not from ignorance but from adherence to culturally legitimate practices, requiring dialogue between traditional leaders and communities to balance cultural preservation with economic sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines the economic structure and structural transformation in 13 regencies/cities in Central Sulawesi Province during the 2013–2023 period. Its primary objective is to evaluate whether the region’s mineral wealth functions as a “blessing” or a “curse” by analyzing the readiness for economic diversification. This study employs a quantitative approach integrating Klassen’s Typology, the Natural Resource Dependency Index (NRDI), the Location Quotient (LQ), and Shift-Share Analysis (SSA-DS). The findings reveal that Morowali and North Morowali Regencies fall into Quadrant I (Advanced and Fast-Growing) but exhibit extreme dependency, with NRDI values exceeding 50. In Morowali, the manufacturing sector serves as the dominant base (LQ=1.90) with high local competitive advantage (DS=72.60), driven by nickel downstream processing. Conversely, North Morowali exhibits a resource paradox where the mining sector is the base sector (LQ=2.51) yet lacks comparative advantage (DS=−2.23), indicating a high risk of the resource curse. To transform natural wealth into a sustainable blessing, Central Sulawesi must prioritize strategic diversification into non-extractive sectors, such as the processing industry (DS=32.26 in North Morowali) and the service sector, supported by institutional reforms and investment in human capital.

Abstract

Indonesia's economy heavily depends on the agricultural sector, especially plantation crops, and the Farmers' Terms of Trade (NTP) are frequently used to gauge the welfare of farmers. South Sumatra and Lampung are the two provinces that produce the most coffee, yet their welfare dynamics do not always match their production dominance, suggesting a possible disconnect between output performance and farmer welfare. Using panel data from 2015 to 2023, this study attempts to investigate how sectoral GRDP, inflation, and coffee production affect Plantation Farmers' Terms of Trade (NTPB). A panel regression approach with high-frequency data is employed to better capture short-term welfare dynamics in leading coffee-producing regions, with the Common Effect Model identified as the most appropriate specification. The findings demonstrate that NTPB is significantly positively impacted by both GRDP and inflation. The beneficial impact of inflation should be read cautiously, too, since it probably represents price rises for agricultural commodities rather than general gains in buying power. Contrarily, coffee productivity has a negative and statistically negligible impact, suggesting that higher output does not always translate into improved farmer welfare. These findings reveal a structural discrepancy between production performance and welfare outcomes, suggesting that price dynamics and overall economic conditions have a greater impact on farmer welfare than productivity alone.

Abstract

Exports of agricultural commodities during the pandemic did not experience a decline. This is because agriculture in Indonesia has experienced good growth compared to other export commodities. The higher the export performance will have a positive impact on a country. The study examines the competitiveness of Indonesia’s coffee, tea, and spices exports before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using secondary data from UN Comtrade and TradeMap, competitiveness is measured through the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index and the Export Product Dynamics (EPD) framework for 2019–2020. Results show that Indonesia maintains a comparative advantage in HS-09 commodities, with RCA values of 1.0000 in 2019 and 1.000653 in 2020. Despite stable comparative advantage, the EPD position falls into the “retreat” quadrant (X = –0.04998; Y = –0.70207), indicating declining market share relative to global competitors. These findings imply that Indonesia’s competitiveness remained resilient during the early pandemic periodbut exhibits weakening long-term development potential.

Abstract

The increasing awareness of sustainable practices in the banking sector raises the question of whether such practices have been implemented efficiently in the context of responding to crises before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to analyze the efficiency level of banks included in the SRI-KEHATI Index before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study employs a quantitative approach using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The data were obtained from the annual reports and sustainability reports of the sampled banks. The findings show that in 2019, BRI had not yet achieved optimal efficiency. In 2020, all banks listed in the SRI-KEHATI Index demonstrated efficient performance. However, inefficiency reappeared in 2021 in BRI and NISP. These findings indicate that the efficiency of ESG-oriented banks changed across the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods. The inefficiency observed in 2021 suggests that post-pandemic efficiency recovery was not evenly experienced by all banks. This study indicates the need to strengthen ESG practices alongside efficient resource management. The findings may provide insights for banks and policymakers in promoting more efficient sustainable banking practices.

Abstract

Economic growth convergence is one of the economic targets that ASEAN countries aim to achieve through various initiatives and regional cooperation. To realize economic convergence, technology and information play a crucial role in accelerating economic growth in each country or region. As there has not been much research discussing the economic convergence in the context of technology and information among Southeast Asian countries, this study aims to uncover how technological innovation acts as a catalyst for economic growth convergence among ASEAN-5. The study uses secondary data from five ASEAN countries (ASEAN-5) from 2000 to 2020, sourced from the World Bank. The Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) is used to estimate the influence of technological and information developments on economic growth in ASEAN countries. The analysis results indicate that mobile phones have extensively penetrated ASEAN countries. This includes various social and economic groups, including communities in rural or remote areas without stable internet access. Mobile phones, especially basic phones (feature phones), remain the primary tool for communication and information access in many developing countries, including those in ASEAN.
