Abstract

Mixing one language with different language, in sociolinguistics is referred to as code mixing. Considered one of social media to share the facts is YouTube. The phenomena of code blending also takes place in certainly one of YouTube channel namely Nessie Judge. Accordingly, this observe focuses on code blending occurs in Nessie decide YouTube channel. The statements of the research trouble in this observe are:(1) What are the forms of code mixing used in Nessie decide YouTube channel? (2) Why are codes mixing utilized in Nessie judge YouTube channel? Abstract

The government, teachers and parents have expressed their concerns over the poor academic performance of many secondary school students. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the extent to which English influences the academic performance of secondary school students. The study employed a case study research design and qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for the qualitative data while students report sheets of the second term 2020/2021 academic session was used as a source of the quantitative data. The study selected a complete class of fifty-two (52) students in north-eastern Nigeria. The finding revealed the average scores of the students’ performance of students in all the subjects taught using English as a medium of instruction were less than 45% average scores while in the subjects taught using Hausa medium the average score is 50% and above. Furthermore, the results showed that students have negative attitudes toward the use of English as a medium of instruction. They perceive English as a difficult language while viewing Hausa as a better medium for learning in secondary schools. Lastly, the findings further revealed that there is a psychological impact on the students as regards the use of English as a medium of instruction. Using English makes them feel uncomfortable and embarrassed when they do not understand some words or when they are asked to speak or ask questions. The study makes some recommendations to improve the academic performance of students and further research.

Abstract

There have been many reforms in English teaching and learning in Vietnam. Therefore, it raises a sufficient need for exploring the effectiveness of different coursebooks. This research is more qualitative than quantitative to investigate EFL teachers’ evaluation of the coursebook Skillful 2 – Listening and Speaking in a specific educational institution in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Six teacher participants using this coursebook partook in this study. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected by using two instruments, questionnaires and semi-interviews. The study provided a new checklist for evaluating materials in teaching and learning speaking and listening. The findings showed that (1) the strengths of the coursebook: e.g. the well-presented content page or the potential of building a strong English foundation of students’ proficiency; and (2) weaknesses of the book: via unimpressive cover page, the mismatch between the book’s content and the curriculum assigned in Vietnam, and the challenges found for teaching mixed-level classes. This study suggested some implications enhancing the effectiveness of sufficient materials for higher educational institutions.

Abstract

Legal English, also known as Language of the Law (Mellinkoff, D. 2004), is an indispensable factor contributing to the development of legal field. At Hanoi Law University, Legal English is a compulsory subject in the syllabus of legal English majors and International Trade Law majors. The question that what obstacles students face when dealing with legal English, however, has not been fully answered at that institution. This present research, which makes use of survey questionnaires as the main method, aims to study the challenges of learning legal English from the students’ perspective. The results indicate notable difficulties arising from the distinctive characteristics of legal English, differences in legal systems between countries and insufficient background knowledge of the laws. It is expected that these findings do propose a number of practical recommendations in order to improve the effectiveness of learning legal English among students as well as the methods of teaching legal English among teachers.

Abstract

There were rare researches undertaking the study to analyse senior high school students’ perceptions toward their motivation during e-course. Therefore, this study was to observe their motivation during e-course and was to identify male and female students’ differences for their motivation during e-course. This study engaged 27 senior high school students in East Java, 21 female and 6 male. This study employed quantitative descriptive with Mann Whitney analysis to observe their motivation differences. The results underlined that (1) mostly students interested to gather ideas during e-course. (2) They interested to evolve their own ideas. (3) Majorities of students liked in completing their individual tasks. (4) They also enjoyed group assignments. (5) Most of students tended to ask a teacher toward incomprehensive material parts. (6) They felt attractive to do group discussion during e-course. In addition, there were no differences between male and female students on their motivation during e-course. It was proved by significance two tailed at .464 upper than .05.  Suggestions are provided for a pedagogic and future research.

Abstract

Indonesian students have several difficulties while studying the English language, but one of the most challenging is determining how to correctly pronounce the different English sounds.  It is difficult for Indonesian students to master the pronunciation of English since their native language (Indonesian language) interferes with their attempts to study English as a foreign language. According to the source of the problem, there are significant discrepancies in the pronunciation systems of the two languages, which is the root cause of the interfering noises that were heard throughout the broadcast. They may be found in various areas, including phonemes, phonetic characteristics, word stress, sentence stress, and intonation, to mention a few.

Abstract

English communication, which has become an essential skill for graduates of the university, has not been achieved because of the low performance in spoken English proficiency. Offering necessary circumstances to support English learning during the outbreak of covid-19 is a challenge for educators in this digital age. This study addressed the emerging issue of the availability of media in online learning. It specifically aimed at designing interactive digital media that would not only assist the students in gaining the language skills but also develop their self-learning through its flexibility and accessibility. Design-based research was employed in the present study that involved the first-grade students of higher education. The ASSURE Model was used as a guideline for the appropriateness of the media, and a need analysis was conducted to find out the target and learning needs of the students through interview and questionnaires. The result showed that the design of interactive digital media gave positive impacts on the higher education students’ English communication skills and their independence in learning as well. The students’ performance was improved through pre-test and post-test results. The designed media itself was considered very good (a score of 87) by the seven aspects namely organization, speaking activities, appearance, learner-centered, content, feedback availability, and motivation impact.
