Abstract

Theoretically, positive relationships are found in several positive education concepts such as PERMA, PROSPER, EPOCH, and SEARCH, each with its own theoretical characteristics, but all aim to improve a person's well-being. In practice, positive relationships can be realized in various forms, for example in friendships, the workplace, family, and education. One form of education that is uniquely traditional in Indonesia is the Islamic boarding school (pesantren). Examining positive relationships in Islamic boarding schools requires an indigenous approach to view positive relationships in their context. Research on positive education in Islamic boarding school education culture is still underexplored, especially on the issue of positive relationships, which is one of the points of significant difference from other educational cultures, both in Indonesia and abroad. Therefore, this study aims to explore the form of positive education, and more specifically, positive relationships, using indigenous psychology in Islamic boarding school education culture. This study uses a qualitative approach and data collection using an open-ended questionnaire involving 177 students as participants. Data analysis used thematic analysis to produce meaningful patterns from the existing data set. The results of this study indicate that positive relationships formed within the Islamic boarding school culture are between students and their kyai (Islamic clerics), mentors, teachers, and fellow students. The outcomes of these relationships within the students include a sense of security and self-confidence, resilience and positive orientation, self-regulation and personal wisdom, social concern and altruism, a sense of togetherness, social awareness, and interpersonal skills.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic Sufism is experiencing dynamic structural adjustments as academic scrutiny increases regarding its capacity to address modern spiritual and socio-ethical dilemmas. Despite extensive literature, a comprehensive mapping of global scholarly trajectories and their analytical translation into localized Islamic propagation (da'wah) models remains critically absent. This study examines global research trends in contemporary Islamic Sufism, identifying its intellectual architecture, thematic evolutions, and strategic relevance to Sufi-oriented da'wah in Indonesia. Utilizing a hybrid bibliometric approach integrated with qualitative content analysis, this study evaluates 96 Scopus-indexed publications spanning 2015–2024. Unless otherwise specified, references to “global” scholarship throughout this study denote this Scopus-indexed, English-language corpus rather than the full body of worldwide Sufism literature. Bibliometric indicators, including co-citation networks and thematic mapping, were analyzed via the Biblioshiny package in R. The findings reveal a significant paradigm shift in contemporary Sufi scholarship, moving from isolated esoteric-mystical dimensions toward an active, highly interdisciplinary discourse. The intellectual structure has reconfigured around themes of religious moderation, ethical spirituality, social resilience, and public engagement. This study offers a preliminary conceptual contribution by bridging bibliometric insights with localized practices, proposing a tentative framework for "engaged Sufism"—built on the recurring thematic clusters of religious moderation, ethical spirituality, social resilience, and public engagement identified in the bibliometric mapping. This framework provides an inclusive, contextual, and transformative foundation for contemporary da'wah models within Indonesia’s pluralistic society.

Abstract

Studies on Islamic governance extensively highlight the integration of religious values into contemporary administrations. However, theoretical explanations regarding how these values interact with political trust in constructing social development perceptions at the local level remain limited. This study analyzes the significance of Islamic values, political trust, and governance quality in shaping social development perceptions among urban political actors in Zanzibar. Employing an exploratory qualitative design, data were gathered through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 22 political actors from CCM, ACT-Wazalendo, and CHADEMA, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that social development perceptions are not monolithic, but rather a dialectical construction driven by governance quality, political trust, and the internalization of axiological Islamic values—specifically amanah (trustworthiness), ‘adl (justice), shura (consultation), and maslahah (public interest). Crucially, this study offers a distinct theoretical contribution by redefining the function of these religious values; rather than operating merely as static normative doctrines, they transform into active evaluative instruments and empirical frameworks for legitimacy used by political actors to measure bureaucratic performance and development trajectories within a contemporary urban Muslim society.
