Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a prevalent non-communicable disease associated with serious complications. Physical activity is a modifiable risk factor that plays an important role in glycemic control. This study aimed to analyze differences in fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels based on physical activity levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at primary health care centers in Kupang City. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 71 respondents selected through consecutive sampling. Physical activity levels were assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). fasting blood glucose was measured from capillary blood samples, while HbA1c was obtained from venous blood samples. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, and mean differences across PA categories were tested using one-way ANOVA. The results showed no statistically significant differences in fasting blood glucose (p = 0.610) or HbA1c (p = 0.283) based on physical activity levels. In conclusion, physical activity level was not significantly associated with fasting blood glucose or HbA1c among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at primary health care centers in Kupang City. These findings suggest that optimal glycemic control requires a holistic approach, including physical activity, treatment adherence, and dietary management. Keywords: physical activity; fasting blood glucose; glycated hemoglobin; type 2 diabetes mellitus; primary health care centers

Abstract

Household waste is predominantly organic, consisting of food scraps, vegetables, and fruits that naturally decompose. However, the decomposition process may lead to environmental and health problems if not properly managed; therefore, appropriate waste management is essential. One method for managing household waste is composting. This study aimed to determine the potential of the bioinoculant BioTP to enhance macronutrient content in household organic waste compost. This research employed an experimental pretest–posttest with control design. Macronutrient levels (N, P, and K) in household organic waste were measured before and after the decomposition process in both the treatment group (with BioTP) and the control group. The data were analyzed using a t-test. The results showed that after decomposition, all macronutrients (N, P, and K) in the treatment group increased. The macronutrient content in all treatments met the standards for organic fertilizer. Statistical analysis before and after decomposition indicated a significant difference in nitrogen (N) levels in both the treatment and control groups (p < 0.05), whereas phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) levels showed no significant differences (p > 0.05). Comparison between the treatment and control groups also revealed no significant differences in N, P, and K levels (p > 0.05). In conclusion, BioTP has the potential to enhance macronutrient content in household organic compost; however, its effect has not yet reached an optimal level. Keywords: household organic waste; decomposition; bioinoculant; macronutrients

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia and associated with serious complications affecting multiple organs. The increasing global prevalence of diabetes has encouraged exploration of alternative natural therapies with antihyperglycemic potential. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of corn silk (Zea mays L.) extract in reducing blood glucose levels in diabetic mice. An experimental study was conducted using two groups of mice, each consisting of six animals. Group I received corn silk extract, while Group II received metformin. Blood glucose levels were measured after treatment, and differences between groups were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. Both corn silk extract and metformin reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic mice. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the mean reduction of blood glucose levels between the two groups (p = 0.083). Corn silk extract demonstrated a glucose-lowering effect comparable to metformin in diabetic mice, indicating its potential as a natural antihyperglycemic agent. Keywords: corn silk; diabetes mellitus; metformin

Abstract

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations of the respiratory tract, typically presenting as cystic structures filled with fluid or air. Although generally detected in childhood, some cases remain asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally in adulthood. This case report aims to describe the clinical findings, diagnostic process, and management of a giant bronchogenic cyst detected incidentally in an adult patient. This study used a case report approach. A 56-year-old female patient underwent routine health screening in which a thoracic abnormality was detected. Diagnostic evaluation included chest radiography, thoracic computed tomography (CT) scan, and CT-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy with cytological examination. Chest radiography revealed a large mass in the paratracheal region without mediastinal shift. Further evaluation with thoracic CT scan confirmed a massive hypodense cystic lesion measuring 14.8 × 9.0 × 17.0 cm in the left hemithorax, extending to the left paracardial region and causing partial collapse of the left lung. CT-guided fine needle aspiration produced clear fluid, and cytological analysis showed no evidence of malignancy, supporting the diagnosis of a benign bronchogenic cyst. The patient subsequently underwent surgical resection. In conclusion, Giant bronchogenic cysts may remain asymptomatic and be detected incidentally. Imaging modalities combined with histopathological confirmation play a crucial role in establishing the diagnosis. Surgical resection is the definitive treatment to prevent potential complications and possible malignant transformation, even in asymptomatic cases. Keywords: bronchogenic cyst; congenital lung cyst; case report

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder with a rising global prevalence and is frequently accompanied by hypertension. Adequate glycemic control plays a crucial role in preventing elevated blood pressure among patients with T2DM. This study aimed to compare systolic and diastolic blood pressure between patients with controlled and uncontrolled glycemic status. An analytical cross-sectional design was employed involving 71 patients with T2DM from three primary healthcare centers. Data were collected through measurement of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels to determine glycemic control status, along with blood pressure measurements. The data were analyzed using the Independent Samples t-test in JASP software. The statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in systolic blood pressure (p = 0.020) and diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.039) between the controlled and uncontrolled groups. Patients with uncontrolled HbA1c levels exhibited higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to those with controlled HbA1c levels. These findings highlight the importance of routine HbA1c monitoring in primary healthcare settings to prevent hypertension among patients with T2DM. In conclusion, glycemic control status may serve as a significant predictor of blood pressure levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Keywords: blood pressure; type 2 diabetes mellitus; glycated hemoglobin; hypertension; primary healthcare centers

Abstract

ABSTRACTPostoperative fracture wound care using Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) and Open Reduction External Fixation (OREF) methods is an important competency in medical–surgical nursing. However, the limited availability of simulators that represent ORIF and OREF wound conditions poses a challenge in clinical skills learning for students. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility of ORISIM (ORIF and OREF Simulator) as a low-cost wound care learning medium. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design encompassing the stages of needs identification, prototype design and construction, expert validation, product revision, and pilot testing. Validation was conducted by three expert and pilot testing involved 20 nursing students. Student evaluation used a modified version of the Michigan Standard Simulation Experience Scale (MiSSES). Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Quantitative results showed that ORISIM has potential in improving students’ self-efficacy, with mean scores of 4.1 for competence, 4.2 for confidence, and 4.2 for the ability to perform wound care independently. Educational value was rated highly, particularly in ease of use (4.4), cognitive skill development (4.1), and support for psychomotor skills (4.2). Simulation realism demonstrated moderate to high scores, with anatomical correctness rated at 4.1, anatomical accuracy at 3.8, and simulator durability at 4.4. Qualitative analysis identified three main themes: wound realism, material characteristics, and educational value and ease of use. ORISIM provided a learning experience that supported improvements in self-efficacy and procedural skills. Further development is required to enhance anatomical realism and to test its effectiveness through an experimental research design. Keywords: Simulator; ORIF; OREF; Wound care; Nursing.
