Abstract

This study examines how personal and social deixis function as pragmatic strategies in the YouTube sermons of Habib Ja’far, a prominent figure in popularizing contemporary Islamic discourse. Adopting a qualitative sociopragmatic approach, the research analyzes twenty-two video excerpts across multiple YouTube channels—Jeda Nulis, VINDES, Metro TV, and Close the Door—to investigate how linguistic choices mediate persona construction, audience engagement, and digital religious authority. The analysis integrates Levinson’s (1983) framework of deixis, Goffman’s (1981) concept of footing, Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, and Bell’s (1984) audience design model, contextualized within Campbell’s (2012) notion of performative digital authority. Findings reveal four dominant patterns: (1) personal deixis (saya, aku, gua, kita) as a tool for negotiating persona and inclusivity; (2) social deixis (Mbah, Bang Haji, Sahabat saya yang non-Muslim) as a resource for structuring hierarchy and solidarity; (3) intertextual deixis linking modern egalitarian speech with prophetic authority; and (4) cross-format deixis variation reflecting adaptive pragmatics across genres and platforms. The study concludes that Habib Ja’far’s deixis exemplifies a hybrid, performative, and participatory model of religious authority, where linguistic adaptability and relational sincerity underpin the effectiveness of Islamic communication in the digital public sphere.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media and the surge of misinformation have created a profound epistemological crisis that challenges established notions of truth and knowledge. This study analyzes the reconstruction of truth in the post-truth era, in which emotional narratives and ideological biases frequently outweigh empirical evidence. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the research explores the implications of post-truth dynamics for epistemic authority, public trust, and digital literacy. Primary and secondary sources including academic literature, books, and peer-reviewed articles on epistemology and digital media are examined to provide a comprehensive theoretical framework. The findings indicate that misinformation is often fueled by emotional persuasion, algorithmic personalization intensifies ideological polarization, and diminishing institutional credibility accelerates epistemic relativism. These conditions collectively weaken society’s capacity to distinguish reliable information from falsehoods. The study concludes that reconstructing truth in the digital age requires a multidimensional strategy that integrates robust digital literacy, transparent media practices, and strengthened epistemic responsibility. Such an approach is essential to restoring informed judgment, rebuilding trust, and safeguarding the integrity of knowledge in contemporary public discourse.

Abstract

This study explores the meaning of two Instagram accounts of Academic Library; the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the University of Indonesia, focusing on their posts and engagement. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to collect data through semi-structured interviews with librarians who manage the accounts and their users who follow the accounts. Instagram has become a central platform for communication and promotion in academic libraries, as evidenced by the University of Indonesia (UI) and UIN Sunan Kalijaga. They use it to share service-related information, document library activities, and encourage student engagement. UI manages its accounts through a centralized system, while UIN uses a collaborative model. However, both institutions emphasize inter-unit coordination and developing librarians' digital design and public communication skills. Despite its potential, Instagram faces several challenges in the library context. These include limited content diversity, low response rates to direct messages, and inadequate visual design skills among account managers. These limitations hinder the platform's ability to meet students' information needs effectively and diminish its capacity to build emotional connections with users. Furthermore, librarians often perceive Instagram as a formal institutional tool, limiting its communicative flexibility and user-centric appeal. To address this, a more humanistic content strategy combining storytelling, an interactive carousel format, and participatory features is needed. This approach would enable more dynamic, two-way communication, increase user engagement, and strengthen the library's image as an inclusive, responsive, and digitally relevant space within the academic community.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between educational level and socioeconomic status in determining individuals' interpersonal communication competence when responding to digital deceptive messages. Utilizing a descriptive quantitative research design, the authors developed a 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire based on authentic fraudulent messages obtained from police investigators in Tanjungpinang and Bintan, Indonesia. Data collected from 120 participants underwent rigorous validity, reliability, and normality testing before being analyzed via multiple regression. The findings reveal that while educational level and socioeconomic status collectively show a significant positive correlation with communication competence, socioeconomic status alone provides a negligible contribution. Specifically, the regression model suggests that higher education levels significantly enhance one’s ability to navigate digital interactions safely, whereas employment status does not significantly alter this competence due to universal smartphone access. This research contributes a predictive framework for identifying cybercrime vulnerability, highlighting that educational background is a more critical factor than wealth or job status in developing the interpersonal metafunctions necessary to detect speech intentions and avoid digital traps.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the meaning of the Topat War tradition and the dynamics of its preservation in the context of tourism development and the digital era. A qualitative descriptive approach with a digital ethnography perspective was employed. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews with cultural actors and community stakeholders, and analysed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The study is theoretically supported by cultural mediation theory and the concept of ritual integrity versus performative adaptation in tourism contexts. The findings show that the Topat War tradition embodies symbolic meanings related to spiritual expression, prosperity, and interfaith coexistence within a shared sacred space. In the context of tourism, the tradition is managed through a controlled cultural model in which customary institutions regulate ritual procedures and limit commercialisation to maintain sacred values, while tourism contributes as a complementary driver of local economic activity. In the digital era, the tradition experiences a dual dynamic: digital technologies expand cultural dissemination and educational reach, but also shift participation toward visual and performative engagement, creating risks of cultural commodification and reduced ritual depth. These challenges are addressed through adaptive customary governance, including ethical documentation rules, restrictions on recording in sacred moments, and cultural education for younger generations. The study highlights that the sustainability of the Topat War tradition depends on the synergy between customary institutions, sustainable tourism management, and the ethical use of digital technology in preserving its sacred and cultural integrity.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of collective engagement and social identity in the context of the "Taruno Suryo" Reog Art Community as a strategic approach to improving the community's spiritual well-being. This descriptive qualitative research, using a case study approach, applies purposive sampling to select key subjects from the community. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Furthermore, the data were analyzed and interpreted using symbolic interactionism theory and social identity theory to explore how symbolic interaction in Reog art practices can strengthen collective bonds and social identity, thereby supporting shared spiritual well-being. The results of the study indicate that the concept of collective engagement, manifested through members' active involvement in every Reog art activity, can serve as a basis for interaction that, in turn, gives rise to social identity as a pillar for strengthening the solidarity of cultural inheritors. The process of internalizing cultural values and religiosity serves as a forum for fostering spiritual well-being. The integration of these concepts can make the "Taruno Suryo" Reog art community one of the art media capable of fostering the spiritual well-being of community members by internalizing the cultural values of Reog Ponorogo in every art activity.

Abstract

This paper explores the tradition of drinking Arabian spice coffee at Menara Layur Mosque in Kampung Melayu, Semarang, Indonesia, as a cultural practice rich in philosophical values that go beyond beverage consumption. The tradition, which takes place during Ramadan, symbolises brotherhood, togetherness and multicultural heritage in a region inhabited by Arabs, Chinese and Indians. Serving Arabian spice coffee with dates and snacks after breaking the fast strengthens social bonds within the Muslim community. From a spiritual perspective, Drinking Arabian spice coffee plays an important role in Islamic traditions, especially Sufi practices, to maintain consciousness during nightly worship. Using observation and critical history methods, this study found that this tradition embodies hospitality and respect in Arab and Islamic culture. However, preserving this tradition faces intergenerational challenges, with some younger members feeling less engaged or unfamiliar with the practice. This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings, cultural values, and preservation efforts of the Arabian spice coffee tradition at Layur Tower Mosque by using a qualitative approach and historical methods. The research findings highlight the harmonious blend of social, spiritual, and cultural values that make up the identity of the local community and the importance of maintaining this tradition as part of the local cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of fatherhood in visual da’wah content on social media, which plays an important role in shaping religious understanding and parenting practices within Muslim families. Situated within the fields of digital da’wah and Islamic communication, this study aims to analyze how fatherhood discourse is constructed through illustrative content on the Instagram account @abun_nada and to examine the role of visual, verbal, and layout elements in articulating Islamic moral teachings such as compassion, responsibility, and moral exemplarity. Employing a qualitative approach, this study applies multimodal discourse analysis to 24 purposively selected visual da’wah posts published on the Instagram account @abun_nada between November 2024 and November 2025. The posts were selected based on recurring fatherhood themes, father-child representations, and the integration of visual and verbal elements relevant to multimodal analysis. The findings indicate that the father figure is represented not as a hierarchical authority, but as a relational figure who constructs authority through caregiving actions, dialogic interaction presented through captions and direct speech, and emotional involvement represented through intimate visual framing and everyday interactions with children. These multimodal elements enable moral and religious meanings to be communicated implicitly, allowing da’wah to operate as a lived moral practice embedded in everyday experience. This study contributes to the development of digital da’wah and multimodal communication studies by demonstrating how Islamic parenting values and fatherhood norms are negotiated through relational representations on social media.

Abstract

This article investigates the sectarian tensions between the MPU (Ulama Consultative Assembly), the official forum of ulama in Aceh, and the MPTT (Tawhid Tasawuf Study Council), a Sufi community and tariqa (Islamic order). The study adopts a descriptive qualitative methodology, drawing upon news reports, publications, and relevant data pertaining to the conflict between the MPU and the MPTT prior to analysis. The research focuses on Abu Amran Waly, the MPTT, and the responses of the MPU of Aceh — notably several fatwas — concerning his Sufi teachings. The findings indicate that the conflict between the MPU and the MPTT is rooted in theological disputes and a contestation of religious authority. The MPU regards the MPTT as propagating erroneous doctrines, particularly as the influence of the MPTT extends to Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, and even further to Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. It is evident that the theological and political-economic dimensions of the conflict are inextricably intertwined.
