OmniAquatika is a scholarly refereed research journal which aims to promote the theory and practice, innovation, engineering and management as well as social-economic relevant in fisheries and marine sciences fields. The main aspects of research areas include, but are not exclusive to the current research on cells, organisms, populations, ecosystems, or processes that affect aquatic systems in the field of fisheries and marine science. The journal also welcome other aquatic relevant aspect related to the transport, fate, control of nutrients and abatement of pollutants in the aquatic environment as well as the ecosystem rehabilitation. The authors and readers are students, scientists, and regulatory experts from the academic, industrial, and government sectors worldwide. Master thesis and part of dissertation research work might becoming the potential contributors. High-quality, research articles make up the primary content. Other contributions are short communications, reviews, and special issues. Before contributions are accepted for publication, they must pass a peer-review process managed by the editor-in-chief.

Abstract

As excessive capture activity adversely impacts fisheries sector, fish resources management is a necessity. This study was conducted as a scientific contribution for the managements of bottom longline fisheries in Arafura Waters and areolate grouper (Epinephelus areolatus) as one of the target catches. It was carried out from February to December 2017 and in November 2018. Data on the fishing grounds of eight bottom longline vessels were obtained from the vessel monitoring system (VMS) of Probolinggo Marine and Fisheries Resources Supervisory Unit, Mayangan Probolinggo Fishing Port, and Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP) Tual Station. Based on the analysis of the coordinates from the VMS, the fishing grounds of the bottom longline vessels in Arafura waters were found around Dolak until the border with Merauke and around Timika until Aru Islands. The composition of dominant catches consisted of croaker (Pennahia spp.) and snapper (Lutjanus spp.), as well as grouper (Epinephelus spp.) in a smaller proportion. The size structure of the areolate grouper caught with bottom longlines was 21.5–54.5 cmTL; its length at first capture (Lc) was 33.9 cmTL; and its asymptotic length was 70.5 cmTL. Its growth rate (K) was found 0.26 per year. The fishing mortality (F) of the species was found higher than its natural mortality (M), and its exploitation level (E) was 0.74, meaning that the species was already overfished. The exploitation should be reduced by 40–50% to keep the fish resources in Arafura sustainable, especially for areolate grouper. Keywords: fishing ground, bottom longline, exploitation level, tiger grouper, Arafura

Abstract

  Banten Bay is located in the north of Java Island and influenced by anthropogenic activities around the bay. Increasing population growth and rapid development of industrial and urban activities around the waters of the Banten Bay can lead to an increased input of pollutants in the form of heavy metal in the water body. This study aims to analyze the Pb and Hg levels that accumulate in mud crab (Scylla serrata) in Cengkok coastal waters, Banten Province. Samples of the mud crabs were taken in the waters for six months, from March to August 2019. Analysis of heavy metal concentrations was carried out using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric (AAS) AA 7000 series Shimadzu. Heavy metal (Pb and Hg) in the mud crab in Banten Bay were below the specified quality standard. The bio-concentration factor of the mud crab was low (<100). Results of the calculation of the maximum limit of consumption of the mud crab meat (that accumulates heavy metals in the human body) were 3.5 kg of meat/week for adults and 0.9 kg of meat/week for children.Keywords: Crustacean, pollution, limit of consumption.

Abstract

INDO12, a 1/12 regional configuration of the NEMO3.1 physical ocean model covering the whole Indonesian EEZ has been developed and was running with 3D daily and 2D surface hourly outputs in the framework of the INDESO project. Validate the model results highly required for any downstream applications (services or scientific studies). In order to enhance confidence in using the INDO12 model outputs in Makassar Strait, qualitative comparisons with observed variables is performed. The datasets were used in this study provided by the INSTANT and MITF programs. Validation of model outputs was performed by compare the value of variables from simulation with observation results.The method of comparisons was conducted as follows:current velocities, temperature and salinity, volume transport. The volume transports differences especially occurred below the thermocline layer. The model was colder and fresher in the thermocline layer, whereas deeper the model was warmer and saltier.The differences of the volume transport and temperature distribution affected the transport-weighted temperature and 16°C isotherm depth. The model produced warmer transport-weighted temperature and deeper 16°C isotherm depth compared to the observations. It is concluded from the validation results that the model give a fairly good comparison with the in-situ data, especially for seasonally signals.Keywords: Validation, INDO12, Ocean Model, Makassar Strait, INSTANT and MITF Programe

Abstract

Oil spills in the sea are generally prevented in various ways, one of them is the bioaugmentation method through bacterial entrapment on sawdust carriers. The entrapment of bacteria is one of the bacterial immobilization techniques. The potential of bacterial consortium on sawdust is still not widely used, especially in long-term storage. The purpose of this study was to obtain the viability of hydrocarbonoclastic bacterial consortium on sawdust after 0, 7, and 41 days of storage. The bacterial consortium consists of Bacillus aquimaris, B. megaterium, B. pumilus, Halobacillus trueperi, and Rhodobacteraceae bacterium. The samples were tested by culturing the immobilized bacterial consortium of 0, 7, and 41 days on falcon tubes containing crude oil and seawater. The viability of the immobilized bacterial consortium was tested for 28 days (days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28) by enriched the bacterial populations periodically. The viability test was also supported by the measurement of environmental parameters on the 1st day and the 28th day such as DO, pH, salinity and, temperature. The results show that bacterial consortium in all storage periods was viable on sawdust carriers which related to the high number of bacterial populations on the 28th day. The most viable bacterial consortium on sawdust was the 0-day storage (9.59 x 108 CFU/ml) which was indicated by the increases phase at the end of the day. It was proved that the bacteria are still productive and could degrade petroleum hydrocarbons.

Abstract

Mangrove crabs (Scylla sp.) are important economic fishery commodities that will be developed in Gorontalo Province. Mangrove crabs have large and prospective market opportunities in the domestic and foreign market. The mangrove crabs demand in this country is very high. Market demand for mangrove crabs has not been able to be fulfilled, because of the limited catch and the production of aquaculture which is still very minimal. The problem is how the development of mangrove crab cultivation will be applied in Gorontalo Province. The purpose of this research was to study and determine the development strategy of mangrove crab cultivation in Gorontalo Province in accordance with the potential and carrying capacity of the environment. The researched method was survey method with observational data collection and random sampling techniques. Data analysis was performed descriptively and SWOT analysis. Based on the SWOT analysis the strength (S) most influential on the development of mangrove crab culture in Gorontalo Province is government support and profitable business prospects (0.66), while the biggest weakness is the limited capital (0.54) and the low quality of human cultivation resources (0,48), and the biggest opportunity (O) is economic value (Very popular, because it is delicious and contains high nutritional value) (0.8), and threat (T) environmental degradation (0.8). Abstract

Energy and electricity demand in Riau Islands is increasing rapidly due to the fast-growing population, urbanization, industrial development, and economic growth. The limitations of energy and electricity in the Riau Islands caused frequent blackouts. To support the high demand for energy and electricity in the Riau Islands, renewable energy is the most suitable alternative energy solution. Renewable energy is not only playing a key role in providing energy but also providing long-term clean and sustainable energy. We investigated the wave energy potential in the Riau Islands Sea in four different consecutive monsoons (North monsoon, East monsoon, South Monsoon and West Monsoon) using ECMWF data during January 2018 to December 2018 with 0.125o x 0.125o and 6 hourly spatial and temporal resolutions. We extracted bathymetry data from NOAA’s database ETOPO1 and forecasting wave characteristics use the SPM (Shore Protection Manual) method. The potential wave energy simulation from significant wave height (Hs) and energy period (Te) was shown in spatial distribution based on different monsoon. Our studies found that the potential wave energy was higher in north monsoon with maximum spatial of wave power density 3.240 – 3.640 kW.m-1. The east monsoon tended to be lower potential wave energy with dominance of wave power density at 0 – 0.127 kW.m-1. Keywords: wave power density, potential wave energy, ECWFM, monsoon

Abstract

The high market demand for Pangasius (Pangasius sp.) has encouraged farmers to adopt a cultivation system with high stocking densities and high feeding rates. This causes fish farming waste to increase and ammonia in the waters also increases, resulting in a decrease in water quality. One of the efforts to overcome this problem is by using Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS). This study aims to examine the effect of filters with different media compositions in RAS of Pangasius. Test fish, average weight of 4.59 g, kept for 30 days in aquarium with a density of 1.15 g.L-1. The feed is given at satiation, twice a day. There were five treatments and four replications during study. The treatments were the difference composition of filter media, i.e. A (100% zeolite), B (25% net + 75% zeolite), C (50% net + 50% zeolite), D (75% net + 25% zeolite), and E (100% net). Dacron was used as a mechanical filter in all treatments. The results showed that the composition of different filter materials had a significant effect (P <0.05) on Survival Rate (SR), Total Amount of Feed Fed (TFF), Relative Growth Rate (RGR), and Feed Conversion Efficiency (FCE). The best performance was showed by media biofilter composition of 25% nets + 75% zeolite, with the value of VTR (Volumetric Total Ammonia Nitrogen Removal) were 55.45-66.32 g.m-3.day-1, SR was 93.75%; TFF was 124.84 g; RGR was 2.13%.day-1, and FCE was 46.87%. Various different compositions of net and zeolite as filter media on RAS were able to manage TAN below tolerance limit.Keywords: catfish, recirculation system, filter composition, dacron, net, zeolite.

Abstract

Efforts to increase tilapia production are carried out through intensive culture by taking into account various aspects that support fish survival. The culture system that supports intensive culture is the Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS). The RAS technology has the ability to support aquaculture with very high density and high yields compared to open culture systems. This study aims to determine the effect of different biofilter media in RAS on decreasing TAN concentration and growth of tilapia seeds. The method used was experimental with three treatments and four replications. Tilapia with an average individual weight of 3.40 ± 0.15 g were maintained in RAS with three different biofilter media treatments, sand (A), polystyrene microbeads (B) and kaldnes (C). The parameters observed were pH, DO, temperature, TAN removal efficiency, specific growth rate (SGR) and survival rate (SR). The results showed that different biofilter media had a significant effect (P <0.05) on the TAN removal efficiency value but had no significant effect (P> 0.05) on the SGR and SR values. The sand biofilter treatment (A) gave the best TAN removal efficiency of 36.61±4.82%.Key words: Kaldnes, Polystyrene, Sand, TAN, Tilapia

Abstract

Seagrass meadows in oligotrophic environments are particularly susceptible to nutrient enrichment, yet morphological and architectural seagrass root responses in these ecosystems are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the response of Amphibolis antarctica, one of dominant seagrass species in Shark Bay, roots to nutrient additions along a salinity gradient in the oligotrophic ecosystem of Shark Bay, Western Australia. A fully factorial nutrient additional experiment with four treatments (Control, N, P and N+P) was conducted at each of five sites along a salinity gradient (between ~38ppt in site 1 and ~50ppt in site 5) in Shark Bay across a three-year period (2012-2015). In the laboratory, the roots morphology and architecture A. antarctica were investigated using a software (WinRhizo). Then, a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to investigate if there was a significant change in the morphology and architecture of the roots after the nutrient inputs and along five sites with salinity gradient. There was no significant impact of nutrient addition on the root’s morphology and architecture of A. antarctica species. However, the effect of site factor with salinity gradient was significant to all morphological aspects (total root length, root surface area and root diameter) of A. antarctica roots. These findings highlight the more ecological function of A. antarctica roots being in anchoring of the plant into the seafloor rather than to absorb nutrient from the sediment.Keywords: Nutrient addition, Oligotrophic habitats, Amphibolis antarctica, Shark Bay

Abstract

Mangrove, estuary and lagoon ecosystem can be used as the aquatic organism habitat. These ecosystems also have good suitability to support activity of silvofishery system.  Empang parit as a model of silvofishery using  the integrating between the conservation activity of mangrove and aquatic ecosystem with increasing of benefit income for  fisherman. This research aimed to analyze the model and pattern of empang parit, environment factor of empang parit and benefit cost analysis of empang parit. The research used vegetation analysis, water quality analysis, cash flow analysis, satellite image analysis, and geographical information analysis.  The research explained  that empang parit  required water  temperatur between 29 – 32.6oC, water brightnes between 30 – 60 cm, water salinity between 15 -32 ppt, pH between 7 – 81 and dissolve oxygen between 3.9 – 8.3 mg/L.The empang parit also need  Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Heritiera littoralis and Excoecaria agallocha, Rhizophora mucronata and  Rhizophora apiculate to cover empang parit system.  And empang parit gave postive economic value based on value of  NPV between 2.754.703–3.871.542 IDR, IRR between 21–48 and  R/C between 2.26–2.32.Keywords :      Empang parit;  silvofishery system;  economic valuation;  water quality;  mangrove coverage
