Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to go some steps further to improve the understanding and manageability of air quality. Quality of atmospheric air in large cities is a matter of great importance because of its impact on the environment and on the health of the population. Recently, measures restricting access of private vehicles to the centre of large cities and other measures to prevent atmospheric air pollution are currently topical. The knowledge of air quality acquires special relevance to be able to evaluate the impact of those great social and economic measures. There are many indices to express air quality. In fact, quite every country has its own, depending on the main pollutants. In general, all indices ignore the compositional nature of the concentrations of air pollutants and do not apply methods of Compositional Data Analysis and have some other weak points such as leak of standardized scale. Therefore, the methodology used is founded on Compositional Data Analysis. The air quality index has an adequate correlation between input (concentrations) and output (air quality index), it distinguishes between air pollution and air quality and it has a 0-100 reference scale which makes easier interpretation and management of air quality expression. To illustrate the proposed method, an application is made to a series of air pollution data (Barcelona, 2001-2015). The results show the effectiveness of the 2008 European directive on ambient air quality.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the practices and challenges of guidance and counseling services in southwest Ethiopia secondary schools with the intention of understanding the state of secondary school guidance and counseling and forward improvement options to student service. The study employs a descriptive survey design that involves quantitative and qualitative research methods. The study participants were 392 students and 108 teachers who were selected from the secondary schools of southwest Ethiopia by systematic random sampling. Moreover, 8 counselors, 8 principals, and 8 educational bureau officers were selected by a means of availability sampling.  The data for the study were collected by the administration of questionnaires and the use of oral interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using the frequency of student visits to guidance and counseling office and mean perception score on practices of guidance and counseling. The qualitative data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method with a focus on the major challenges of guidance and counseling services in the sampled schools. The result of the study showed that the majority of secondary school students never visit guidance and counseling offices. The mean perception score of students and teachers towards the usefulness of the service was positive though the provision was either very much limited or most of the time unavailable. The services of guidance and counseling are also influenced by several challenges such as the lack of professionally trained counselors and the required facilities. The researchers conclude the implication of guidance and counseling service and the associated challenges to considerably influence secondary school student learning and personal wellbeing.

Abstract

Macroporous silicon has found applications in sensors, receivers, integrated microchips and solar cells. In this work, we first showed analytically the photoconductivity relaxation time of in macroporous silicon is determined from a system of two transcendental equations. The analytical description of the photoconductivity relaxation model contains the diffusion equation solution both in single crystal substrate and in an effective medium of macroporous layer, as well as boundary conditions recorded for the surfaces of the layer of macroporous silicon and single crystal substrate. We showed that the photoconductivity relaxation time in macroporous silicon rapidly decreases with increasing macropore depth from 0 to 25 μm and reduced thicknesses of the single crystal substrate from 250 to 0 μm. The photoconductivity recombination time in the sample of macroporous silicon is limited by the diffusion of charge carriers from the substrate to the recombination surfaces in the macroporous layer. The system of transcendental equations that we have found will find application in calculating the relaxation time of photoconductivity in macroporous silicon devices such as sensors, receivers, and solar cells.

Abstract

A thermoplastic starch (TPS) was produced, starting with potato starch, glycerol and acetic acid, to shape it in films of thickness around 100 microns. To TPS iron waste filing particles, in the amount of 12% the weight of starch, were introduced in different modalities: as received, reduced in size by the use of a mortar, after treatment with hydrochloric acid, and after treatment and removal of hydrochloric acid. Morphological studies were carried out by optical and scanning electron microscopy and illustrated that the dispersion of iron filings was not optimal, though some improvement was observed by a reduced dimension of the particles. Tensile tests indicated the considerable improvement of stiffness offered by the insertion of iron particles to TPS, although the ultimate strain was reduced to less than 10%. Thermal characterization using thermogravimetry allowed revealing the three typical peaks for potato starch degradation, with only a slight decrease due to iron introduction. EDS allowed evaluating the presence of impurities in the iron filings and evidenced that the presence of iron was more effective on the surface than in the rest of the film. As a final consideration, An improvement in electrical conductivity by over an order of magnitude was obtained by the TPS+Fe+HCl film with respect to pure TPS.

Abstract

Smart phones and sensor technology represent a key part of everyday life and are being used in areas such as safety, training, healthcare and others. Utilizing an array of internal sensors and a metal detector requires an evaluation of the precision of the measurements and performance reviews. Metal detectors are versatile, with uses in healthcare as well as recreational, but a common issue often seen in the proprietary equipment is bad presentation of data. Usually the user interface is just numbers on a display, simplified graphs or sounds. By combining smartphone sensors with a metal detector and a custom mount we model a mapping between the virtual and physical model, a digital twin. In this paper we are utilizing the computing capabilities of a smartphone and employing visualization techniques not possible by partial information. In addition, we present an improved graphical user interface without any proprietary accessories. For this purpose, preliminary case studies are included as a part of a prototype in development.

Abstract

Myelinated neurons are characterized by the presence of myelin, a multilaminated wrapping around the axons formed by specialized neuroglial cells. Myelin acts as an electrical insulator and therefore, in myelinated neurons, the action potentials do not propagate within the axons but happen only at the nodes of Ranvier which are gaps in the axonal myelination. Recent advancements in brain science have shown that the shapes, timings, and propagation speeds of these so-called saltatory action potentials are controlled by various biochemical interactions among neurons, glial cells and the extracellular space. Given the complexity of brain’s structure and processes, the work hypothesis made in this paper is that non-local effects are involved in the optimal propagation of action potentials. A non- local model of the action potentials propagation in myelinated neurons is proposed that involves spatial derivatives of fractional order. The effects of non- locality on the distribution of the membrane potential are investigated using numerical simulations.

Abstract

Objectives: A systematic study on the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect has been developed so far by introducing different complementary approaches, which can be mainly divided in two kinds: (1) improving the theoretical assessments and model in its simple aspects, and (2) extracting mathematical and physical information from such system with the aim to extend methods or results to other similar physical systems of analogue structure. Methods/Analysis: We use these theoretical approaches: relativity of observer splitting formalism; Lagrangian formalism and Rayleigh potential with a new integration method; Lyapunov theory os stability. Findings: We determined the three-dimensional formulation of the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect model. We determine the analytical form of the Rayleigh potential and discuss its implications. We prove that the critical hypersurfaces (regions where there is a balance between gravitational and radiation forces) are stable configurations. Novelty/Improvement: Our new contributions are: to have introduced the three-dimensional description; to have determined the general relativistic Rayleigh potential for the first time in the General Relativity literature; to have provided an alternative, general and more elegant proof of the stability of the critical hypersurfaces.

Abstract

The dependence of the absolute yield from energies for reaction (γ,γ’)m on the nucleus 77Se was approximated by fit dependences (lines). Due to the visually detected fracture of the reaction yield, the energy interval 5.75-8.0 MeV is conventionally divided into two parts. For the transition step as one experimental point, the left part was approximated to 6.6 MeV, and the right part - from 6.26 MeV. There approximations were eight for both intervals. Given the features of the calculation and the minimum values for χ2, the "best" two fits are approximation dependences in the neighborhood of the intersection point x0 for the left and right arrays of energies. The energy for the activation level (the intersection point for these functions) is Ea≈6.35 MeV. The scheme of electromagnetic γ- transitions for nucleus 77Se are constructed and analyzed. Possible transitions to the isomeric level from higher levels are indicated. Weiskopf model was used to estimate the values of the reduced probabilities of electric EJ- and magnetic MJ- transitions, the probabilities of transitions per unit time and half-life. The theoretical values of the half-lives T1/2 are compared with the experimental data. Prospects for further use of the obtained results for topical problems of nuclear physics are discussed.

Abstract

The experience acquired from the exploitation has shown that problems in the work of oscillatory platforms appear after heavy rains, i.e. when the soil moisture (w) is greatly increased. Then the effect of transportation and sieving is the weakest, due to sticking moist earth for grille of the platform. Therefore, the main aim of this article was to create a complex theoretical and practical mathematical model of the processes mentioned above, in order to test how the platform works in extreme working conditions after abundant and prolonged rains. Therefore, complete research is divided into two characteristic phases: theoretical phase and experimental phase. In the theoretical research phase, dynamic modeling of the process of sieving of extremely wet earth mass was performed using the transmissional function analysis method and the method of Laplace transforms [1]. The Novelty in the theoretical model given by Equation 3 is that the existing model for sieving dry earth mass [2] has been improved by introducing delay coefficient Kt =[0...1]. In the experimental research phase, the original mathematical model was created using the multi-factor experiment plan method which will be shown, while the analysis of the experimental parameters was performed in three characteristic steps: regression analysis- dispersion analysis- decoding mathematical model [3].

Abstract

Secret sharing has been a subject of study since 1979. In the secret sharing schemes there are some participants and a dealer. The dealer chooses a secret. The main principle is to distribute a secret amongst a group of participants. Each of whom is called a share of the secret. The secret can be retrieved by participants. Clearly the participants combine their shares to reach the secret. One of the secret sharing schemes is  threshold secret sharing scheme. A  threshold secret sharing scheme is a method of distribution of information among  participants such that  can recover the secret but  cannot. The coding theory has been an important role in the constructing of the secret sharing schemes. Since the code of a symmetric  design is a linear code, this study is about the multisecret-sharing schemes based on the dual code  of  code  of a symmetric  design. We construct a multisecret-sharing scheme Blakley’s construction of secret sharing schemes using the binary codes of the symmetric design. Our scheme is a threshold secret sharing scheme. The access structure of the scheme has been described and shows its connection to the dual code. Furthermore, the number of minimal access elements has been formulated under certain conditions. We explain the security of this scheme.
