Abstract

Contemporary peri-urban landscapes face fragmentation, marginalisation, and the neglect of widespread cultural heritage. This article explores heritage-led regeneration as a strategic framework to revitalise marginal areas by focusing on the Campo Trincerato in Rome, a system of fifteen forts and three batteries constructed between 1877 and 1891. Despite being largely abandoned, these fortifications remain structurally intact and spatially coherent, offering opportunities for reconceptualisation as infrastructural nodes within broader urban and territorial networks. The study adopts a multi-scalar methodological approach, combining architectural analysis of typological and structural features with contextual investigation of accessibility, ownership, and planning frameworks. Results reveal that while the Campo Trincerato maintains its systemic coherence, institutional fragmentation and limited reuse represent major barriers to regeneration. Nevertheless, its configuration as a defensive ring highlights potential to establish cultural polarities, ecological connections, and community-driven functions in Rome’s suburban areas. The findings underscore the significance of integrating cultural heritage into contemporary regeneration strategies, transforming neglected military infrastructure into catalysts for urban identity, social cohesion, and sustainable development.

Abstract

Dhaka’s rapid urbanisation has intensified challenges of fragmented land use, congestion, and environmental decline, particularly in the Tejgaon Industrial Area (TIA), once designated for light industry but now marked by unregulated mixed-use growth. This study examines the superblock model as a sustainable redevelopment framework for TIA, aiming to integrate density management, mobility, and environmental resilience. A mixed-methods approach combined GIS-based spatial analysis, traffic observations, policy review of the Detailed Area Plan (2022–2035) and Building Construction Rules (2008), and participatory design workshops. Insights from 151 residents, workers, and students informed scenario testing across three models: plot-based, block-based, and superblock development. Findings show that superblocks reduce congestion by diverting traffic to peripheral roads, enhance permeability with 44% more permeable surfaces compared to block-based schemes, and allocate nearly 50% of land for open and public spaces. These outcomes highlight the potential of superblock urbanism to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 11, 13, and 15), improving walkability, public health, and climate resilience. The study concludes that superblocks provide a scalable planning strategy for Dhaka’s transformation and for other fast-growing urban contexts.

Abstract

Short-Term Rental (STR) platforms increasingly reshape housing, tourism, and urban economies, yet their spatial organization in Sub-Saharan African cities remains poorly understood. This study addresses this gap by examining Airbnb market hierarchy in Greater Banjul Area, The Gambia, where tourism growth intersects with uneven urban development. Using 5,657 Airbnb listings collected between September 2024 and July 2025, the study applies an integrated framework combining K-Means clustering, DBSCAN, Global and Local Moran’s I, sensitivity testing, and Zipf rank-size modelling. The results identify a significant core–periphery structure, with core listings concentrated along the Kololi–Senegambia–Fajara coastal corridor and peripheral listings dispersed inland. Positive spatial autocorrelation is robust (Moran’s I = 0.480, p < 0.001). Market segmentation is driven mainly by host rating (η² = 0.639), guest satisfaction (η² = 0.628), and capacity, while price has negligible explanatory power (η² = 0.009). Supply follows a near-Zipfian hierarchy (α = 1.143), whereas price and stay length remain flatter. The findings support differentiated STR regulation, improve tourism infrastructure planning, and guide resource allocation, housing protection, and investment strategies in African urban economies. Originality lies in linking spatial hierarchy with platform-mediated urban tourism governance and urban management.

Abstract

Understanding carbon sink dynamics at local administrative scales is essential for developing effective climate mitigation and urban planning strategies in rapidly urbanizing coastal regions. However, existing studies have largely focused on broader regional scales, providing limited insights into local spatial heterogeneity and governance-relevant carbon management. This study investigates carbon sink profiles and their determinants in the Samarinda Metropolitan Area (SMA), Indonesia, using 34 sub-districts and 289 urban villages as analytical units. Carbon sinks were estimated using Net Primary Production (NPP) data, while Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Spatial Lag Model (SLM), and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) were applied to examine global and local spatial relationships. The results reveal significant spatial clustering of carbon sinks at both sub-district (Moran’s I = 0.277, p = 0.003) and urban village levels (Moran’s I = 0.099, p < 0.001). The urban village model demonstrated superior performance (R² = 0.669) compared with the sub-district model (R² = 0.526). Forest cover (β = 1.020) and wetness (β = 0.225) positively influenced carbon sinks, whereas elevation (β = −0.112) and NDVI (β = −0.131) exhibited negative effects. GWR results identified forest as the strongest determinant (R² = 0.949). Effective local carbon management can enhance ecosystem services, strengthen environmental resilience, reduce climate-related economic risks, and support sustainable urban economic development. These findings support spatially targeted planning interventions, including forest conservation, wetland restoration, and blue carbon governance in coastal metropolitan regions.

Abstract

This paper examines the sustainable viability of repurposing as a community-inclusive approach for brownfield recovery in Hazaribagh, Dhaka, a former leather-processing hub shaped by industrial relocation, environmental degradation, and top-down redevelopment pressure. It addresses a gap in brownfield discourse: the limited integration of environmental remediation, urban economic continuity, and multidisciplinary stakeholder participation in rapidly urbanizing South Asian contexts. While many redevelopment strategies prioritize land clearance, zoning conversion, or technical treatment, the spatial networks, embodied livability, and material practices that already sustain the area are often overlooked. The study explores how socio-cultural continuity and economic diversification can be sustained through place-based regeneration to mitigate spatial effects. Methodologically, it employs cognitive mapping grounded in Kevin Lynch’s five city elements with space syntax analysis and overlaid stakeholder mapping to understand city memory, urban metabolism, and informal economic networks. Findings reveal an adaptive urban system already formed by ongoing circulation of waste, labor, and material reuse. Accordingly, the proposed framework integrates nature-based ecological restoration and circular economy strategies, converting waste into building components and repurposing tannery structures for artisan production and community infrastructure. The study concludes that incremental, participatory, and material-driven interventions can redefine brownfields as regenerative landscapes, providing adaptable models for inclusive transformation in these contexts.

Abstract

This study proposes a parametric modelling framework to assess the socio-economic integration of heritage institutions within urban networks, using the Higher Institute of Fine Arts of Tunis (ISBAT) as a case study. While heritage urbanism has often relied on qualitative interpretation, limited attention has been given to measurable indicators that connect spatial configuration, institutional relationships, and socio-economic urban dynamics. To address this gap, the research combines OpenStreetMap geospatial data, Rhinoceros 3D, and Grasshopper-based parametric modelling to evaluate ISBAT’s connectivity, accessibility, and institutional diversity within the urban fabric of Tunis. Three indicators—Connectivity Density, Accessibility Radius, and Institutional Diversity Index—are developed to translate relational urban conditions into measurable variables. The findings show that ISBAT functions as a central urban node, benefiting from short walking-distance accessibility to major institutions, dense spatial connections, and strong interaction with cultural, educational, governmental, and infrastructural systems. The study contributes to heritage-led urban research by demonstrating how parametric modelling can support evidence-based analysis, planning decisions, and sustainable integration of heritage institutions within contemporary urban networks.

Abstract

Coastal metropolitan areas increasingly face overlapping seismic, hydrological, and climate-related hazards, requiring spatial frameworks that integrate risk reduction with everyday urban performance. This study develops a Triple Landscape Network Model for the Maltepe–Dragos coastal area of Istanbul to translate multi-hazard vulnerability into actionable landscape planning strategies. Using a research-by-design and scenario-based spatial assessment approach, the study overlays ecological, hydrological, topographical, land-use, accessibility, and industrial-heritage layers to identify strategic transformation zones. The proposed model integrates three interconnected systems: an ecological network for coastal–stream–hill continuity, a circulation network for redundant evacuation and pedestrian mobility, and a recreational-cultural network for adaptive reuse and public life. Results identify a 390 m² critical flood-prone zone along Dragos Stream, central nodes located within 5 minutes of the coastline and 15 minutes of the rail system, and the potential conversion of 30–35% of impermeable industrial surfaces into absorptive landscapes. The model also positions post-disaster gathering spaces to serve approximately 60% of nearby residential fabric within 5–10 minutes. By combining nature-based solutions with adaptive reuse, the study demonstrates how resilient landscape infrastructure can reduce disaster costs, enhance urban attractiveness, stimulate local investment, and support sustainable urban economic vitality.

Abstract

Limited scholarship has examined how secondary cities with rich cultural heritage can mobilise cultural capital within public spaces to generate socio-economic outcomes. This study addresses this gap by investigating how cultural public spaces in Chachoengsao Old Town, Thailand — a UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities member since 2020 — can be activated as place-based, intergenerational learning environments contributing to local socio-economic development. Employing a three-phase qualitative methodology integrating secondary data review, systematic urban mapping, and comparative case analysis of Khon Kaen as a benchmark UNESCO Learning City, the study identifies three interconnected deficiencies: spatial disconnection between cultural assets and learning infrastructure, programmatic over-reliance on festival-based activation limiting year-round learning continuity, and institutional fragmentation between municipal governance and community actors — collectively constraining the socio-economic contribution of Chachoengsao's tangible and intangible cultural capital. Drawing on Bourdieu's cultural capital framework, Oldenburg's third place theory, and UNESCO lifelong learning principles, evidence-based spatial, programmatic, and institutional recommendations are proposed for urban planners and policymakers seeking to leverage cultural public spaces as drivers of inclusive socio-economic development. Findings offer transferable principles for secondary cities navigating the intersection of cultural heritage conservation, Learning City policy, and urban economic regeneration.

Abstract

Rapid urban expansion in Erbil has intensified socio-spatial differentiation between open neighbourhoods and gated residential communities. This study examines social segregation through an integrated framework combining street-network centrality, land-use diversity, and residents social outcomes in Kwestan and New Azadi. Spatial Design Network Analysis (sDNA) was used to measure betweenness and closeness/NQPD centrality at 400 m, 800 m, and 2000 m radii; land-use diversity was assessed using the Shannon entropy index; and a semantic differential survey was administered to 180 residents, equally divided between the two neighbourhoods. Results show that the non-gated Kwestan neighbourhood achieved higher network centrality, with BtE400 reaching 1408.9 compared with 106.9 in New Azadi, and BtE800 reaching 8986.6 compared with 472.4. Kwestan recorded higher land-use diversity (H = 0.81) than New Azadi (H = 0.53). Survey findings indicated stronger casual encounters, neighbour interaction, and service accessibility in Kwestan. Correlation analysis revealed positive associations between closeness/NQPD and social interaction (r = 0.299, p = 0.004) and sense of belonging (r = 0.259, p = 0.014). The findings suggest that permeable, mixed-use neighbourhoods can support social integration while strengthening economic vitality through improved accessibility, walkability, and local service distribution.

Abstract

This study develops and validates a Success Index for urban farming implementation in the Egyptian context, addressing the limited integration of urban agriculture within national food-security strategies. Egypt faces severe structural pressures, including desert-dominated land availability, water scarcity, agricultural land fragmentation, food waste, and rising dependence on imports, with wheat imports reaching 58% and agricultural land losses of approximately 74,500 hectares between 1992 and 2015. Using a mixed-methods design, the research combines literature-based analysis of food-security resources and pillars, comparative assessment of local and international urban farming cases, and semi-structured interviews with Egyptian practitioners, including Tulima Farms, Shagarha, VertiCairo, GrowPro, and private urban gardeners. The findings identify differentiated success conditions for professional urban agriculture and private urban gardening. For commercial farms, decisive indicators include strategic location, crop-yield efficiency, capital availability, licensing, water and electricity access, and problem-solving capacity. For household gardens, convenience of location, knowledge access, community support, time commitment, and safe cultivation practices are central. The study concludes that urban farming cannot replace rural agriculture but can complement Egypt’s food system by activating underused urban spaces, reducing food miles, creating micro-enterprise opportunities, and strengthening local urban economic resilience significantly.
