We are a journal on archaeology published by Balai Arkeologi Yogyakarta every May and November each year. This journal seek to promote and shares research results and ideas on archaeology to the public. We covers original research results, ideas, theories, or other scientific works from the discipline of Archaeology mainly in the Indonesian Archipelago and Southeast Asia. Interest from other disciplines (such as history, anthropology, architecture, geology, etc.) must be related to archaeological subject to be covered in this journal. Our first edition was published on March 1980.

Abstract

Gunungwingko Site stone tools consist of two types, namely pseudo stone tools and stone tools. Both types of tools were found in the context of burials. In relation to the context of the findings, the function of the two types of stone tools is thought to be a complementary function of the ceremony or as a ceremonial object that had previously served as a practical tool. As a practical tool, the Gunungwingko pseudo stone tool is characterized by several uses such as being used as a batting tool, an anvil  tool, and as a scrubbing tool. Meanwhile, the non-pseudo stone tool consists of a proto adze, which is practically unused.

Abstract

This paper described the cultural product of the people of the past in terms of the culture of art in writing. In addition, the teachings contained in the kind of literature have sufistic values that have a great influence on the development of Islam, especially in Java. This article is intended to reveal the value contained in the inscription on the door of the tomb of Sunan Kudus, which does not yet know the meaning of the content of the value implied in it.

This paper tries to discuss the development of Yogyakarta City based on the land use model. Changes, both reduction and development, are clearly something that is experienced by the City of Yogyakarta, considering that until now the existence of the City of Yogyakarta has lasted almost a quarter of a century.

Abstract

Archaeological research on markets is actually very interesting to study in the context of cultural reconstruction of past societies. Archaeology in Indonesia cannot do this research by itself using an archaeological approach, but it needs support from other sciences such as sociology and anthropology. Until now, it has not been found market site in the excavation, therefore to trace a common thread is to anology the traditional markets that still exist in some areas.

Abstract

One interesting aspect related to the archaeological remains on the island of Madura is the relationship of the characters behind them with the historical journey that colored them. By regulating the views on the existence of various "legacies" of the past in West Madura, it is hoped that incentives will emerge to better recognize the various things they contain, namely the relationship between Madura and Java.

Abstract

The natural history of the environment can be studied through environmental resources (physical and biotic) along with archaeological resources. Thus, the role of archaeological studies as a support in environmental studies is clear so that this can be the other way around, for the sake of archaeological studies it is necessary to support it by carrying out past environmental studies.
