Abstract

In line with the spirit of decentralization and national development, the demands on agricultural extension agents is focused on farmer empowerment so they can improve their quality of life independently. These efforts need to be supported by a professional agricultural extension agent. This study aimed to determine the competency of agricultural extension agents in empowering farmers. The research was conducted through a survey on government employee who work as agricultural extension agents in paddy farming area in Karawang district and in vegetable farming area in Garut district of West Java. Samples were taken randomly. The results demonstrated that the competency of agricultural extension agents were low, especially in the dimensions of entrepreneurial management, renewal management, and network system guiding. Competency dimensions in fair category were understanding the potential of the region, training management, learning management, communication management, and innovation. The t-test showed that there was no significant difference between the competency of agricultural extension agents who served in the rice agricultural area and those who served in the vegetables farming. There was also no significant difference between agricultural extension agents who continued their formal education in public universities and those who continued there formal education in private universities. The low competency of agricultural extension agents became a challenge to all parties, especially the government (central and local), education institutions, colleges that prepare extension workers and extension staff concerned.

Abstract

Research was done in Segara Anakan water lagoon, Cilacap District, Central Java, from September 2003 to November 2003. Samples of mangrove crab were taken using catching tool of wadong and pintur which setted in the afternoon and unsetted the next morning. From all samples collected, there were 55 male and 113 female crabs. The width range of male shells were 31.5-122.5 mm and weight range were 53.75-286.08 gram, while the females shells have width range of 78.4-120.5 mm and weight range of 69.38-229.08 gram. Fecundity of mangrove crabs (Scylla serrata) ranges between 345,923-1,472,639 eggs with mean value of 646.194. Diameter of the egg curve shows that the mangrove crabs were total spawner, which means totally discharge their eggs.

Abstract

The objective of this article is to study the relation among resource utilization pattern, subsistence and patron client relationship in Danau Tempes fisheries community, South Sulawesi, using a qualitative research method. Data were collected purposive for both small scale and relatively big scale fisheries by means of indepth interview and observation. Scotts moral economy framework was used to analyze the nature of social phenomena. The results show that fisheries resource scarcity due to intensive fishing activities were the reason behind fisheries communitys strategy to handle the subsistence crisis. Patron-client relation was used by fisheries community which hold trust and kinship in regard. The relation was also based on mutual solution in terms of social reciprocity. Clients tend to maintain their relation to patrons due to safety and security reasons from their subsistence crisis, eventhough they have smaller economic profit from that relation. While patrons help clients based on social obligation to help others.

Abstract

Multicollinearity and outliers existence in data can be detected by various techniques. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is one of the statistical techniques that can be used to handle data reduction and multicollinearity problem. However, PCA is very sensitive to outliers as it based on the mean and the covariance matrix. Hubert et al. (2005) developed ROBPCA, a robust PCA to the outliers existence. The ROBPCA combines PP technique and Minimum Covariant Determinant (MCD) method for solving outliers problem. In the present study, ROBPCA is applied to the study case of the regression analysis of infant mortality rate in East Java Province in 2009. The result shows that ROBPCA is more robust compare to PCA when data contains outlier. ROBPCA can explain 85.6 percent of variation by 2 principal components, whereas, PCA needs 3 principal components to explain 86.6 percent of variation. Moreover, ROBPCA produces higher coefficient determination which means the regression model using ROBPCA is better in explaining response variable. The study findings also revealed that the average of duration of exclusive breastfeeding has the largest contribution in lowering infant mortality rate followed by percentage of delivery assisted by medical provider and percentage of households that have access to safe drinking water.

Abstract

Malaria is a disease caused by intercellular obligate protozoa genus of Plasmodium which is a parasite carried by female Anopheles mosquito. One of them is Anopheles barbirostris. Research in several places already proved that Anopheles barbirostris acts as a vector of malaria. One case that occurred in Cineam district, Tasikmalaya regency showed that Anopheles barbirostris is suspected as vector of malaria. This is proven through a research on the relationship between Anopheles barbirostris with malaria. Data was taken from the larvae and adult mosquitoes captured around Cineam village, Tasikmalaya. The observation was done in the open field and laboratory. Data and identification by pictorial key for female Anopheles showed that the population of Anopheles barbirostris was always a dominant population compared to another Anopheles species. Because of the breeding ponds and the resting places were around the village, it is suspected that they mainly bit humans. The result of the observation in laboratory showed the life cycle of Anopheles barbirostris are around 20-27 days, and the longevity of 20 days. Morphological identification of Anopheles barbirostris by pictorial key for female Anopheles showed that there is no any significant difference. This research showed that Anopheles barbirostris was suspected as vector of malaria in Cineam village, Tasikmalaya.

Abstract

Artificial Neural Network (ANN) can be applied to recognice pattern, particularly at the stage of data classification. This study used a multilayer perceptron backpropagation ANN, an unsupervised learning algorithm, to recognize the pattern of uppercase handwriting on the answer sheet of multiple-choice exams. The application of this network involves mapping a set of input against a reference set of outputs. In this research, ANN was trained using 8000 handwritten uppercase characters (A, B, C, and D) consisting of 6000 training data characters (1500 characters for each letter) and 2000 testing data characters (500 characters for each letter). The result showed that for the most optimal performance, the architecture and network parameters were 10 neurons in hidden layer, learning rate of 0.1 and 3000 iteration times. The accuracies of the result using the optimal network architecture and parameters were 90.28% for training data and 87.35% for testing data.
