Abstract

This journal was done in the interest of architectural studies. The goal of the research was to build a Japanese Community Center in Solo. The study began from a certain phenomenon. Ever since the signing of Peace Treaty between Indonesia and Japan, both country had immersed themselves in various cultural exchanges. This leads to the increase of Japanese culture lovers in Indonesia almost every year. To anticipate and control this phenomenon, a place that can hold and regulate the speed and effects of it is needed. The Japan Community Centre will be a place for Japanese Communities’s activities, a medium for learning Japanese culture, and the new spot of historical vacation for Solo City. Metaphorical Architecture was chosen as the design approach with consideration that through Metaphorical Architecture, the character and purpose of the building can be better presented for the public. The Metaphorical Architecture used was the mix of Abstract Metaphor (intangible) and Concrete Metaphor (tangible). The main problem of this designing process is what will be metaphored through this Japan Community Centre. The exploration starts from chosing the name for the building, which is Mugen Jou (Infinity Castle). The metaphorical charcteristics that will be used, based on the name chosen, are Grand, Firm, Massive, The feel of Japanese Castle, Uncountable visualization, and Stacked ala Lego. Keywords: Metaphorical, Grand, Firm, Massive, Castle, Uncountable

Abstract

Plaosan Tourism Market is the only tourism market at Magetan. This market has a potential to be a tourism destination at Magetan because it is located on the tourist route that head towards the popular attractions in Magetan. However this market is not a real tourism market as it does not meet the requirements for tourist destination which include attractions and facilities. This market does not use the potential of the area provided as attractions, even though Magetan is famous for farming and home industries. The market does not have primary and ancillary facilities to fulfill the tourism aspect. Besides the lack of attractions and facilities, the architecture of the market needs something unique on its design to attract the tourists. The design method used to redesign Plaosan Tourism Market is metaphoric architecture, because it can representate and show unique image, so it can attract tourists. The main problems in planning and designing Plaosan Tourism Market with metaphoric architecture approach ie what kind of attractions are needed in Plaosan Tourism Market, how the concept of facilities that requires tourism aspect, what form it will be used as basis of analogy that represents tourist destinations in Magetan, how to transform the base concept to be a tourism market design with metaphoric architecture. The planning and designing of Plaosan Tourism Market with metaphoric architecture approach use creative thinking method which consists of synthesising, elaborating, and imagining. Based on questionnaries, preferred objects to represent Magetan are Sarangan lake, leather handicrafts, Lawu mountain, and Batik Pringsedaphur, all of which will be to the main idea for the design by turning them into metaphor in designing this tourism market.

Abstract

The condition of special school for the deaf and the deaf itself are still apprehensive, especially in Bekasi, West Java. Meanwhile, deaf persons still need to get an education which equivalent to the education that normal children get. However, education for children with special needs, especially those with hearing impairment, requires special implementations based on deaf’s characteristics in some design aspects in order to improve physical and psychological comfort required by deaf students so they can be more comfortable adapting to school circumstances. Design method that seems appropriate to be applied to this special school for the deaf is psychological architecture approach that focuses on the characteristics of the deaf itself. Psychological architecture as design method that used in this special school is adjusted to the characteristics of hearing impaired in order to improve the quality of physical and psychological comfort of deaf students in the learning process and activities by applying the principles of psychological architecture on site analysis, school layout arrangement, and also the appearance of interior and exterior of special school for the deaf.

Abstract

Abstract

Urban conservation plays a siginificant part in urban design to develop historical quarter, in which sense of place theory can be applied. Kampung Arab Pasar Kliwon, an ethnic cultural quarter in Surakarta, is the case of this urban conservation study. It’s chosen due to the city goverment’s neglect on the development of the heritage area. The conservation includes living heritages in the area, which allows the place to be designated as living museum. This study rises a question on the concept of Kampung Arab Pasar Kliwon conservation, using sense of place theory, on desigining living museum. Answer to the stated issue is enhancing the activity, physical setting, and image in urban area and heritage buildings. Research method used in this study is qualitative-study case. On the street, sense of place is utilised to enhance economic activity, street life activity, cultural activity, and educational activity through urban physical element. In the heritage building, sense of place acts to preserve existing activities and develop or add new activities, room atmosphere, and building exterior. The built physical elements, accommodating the existing and new activities, are designed to conjure particular images (legibility, knowledgibility, and psychological access) through  conservation actions (preservation, reconstruction, and infill).
