Abstract

The aim of this study is to lower the value quality parameters of used cooking oil to reach the national industry standards using adsorbent of noni (morinda citrifolia L.) fruit as well as to determine the optimum concentration (% w/w) of noni in increasing quality of used cooking oil. The parameters in this study are the water content, free fatty acids, colour and density. The method used to determine the water content and free fatty acid levels were the gravimetric method and acid-base titration, while determination of the colour and density used UV-Vis spectrophotometer and pycnometer. The concentration of noni adsorbent in the oil refining process varied ie 12%, 15%, 18%, 21%, and 24%. The results showed that the water content, free fatty acids, and the density decrease with an increase in adsorbent. The oil colourwas brighter with increasing noni fruit adsorbent used. The study showed that the noni fruit adsorbent can lower the value quality parameters of used cooking oil, and only the density from the four parameters did not meet ISO standard. The concentration weight per weight (% w/w) optimum noni fruit was 24%.

Abstract

Jackfruit seeds are part of the jackfruit which were not used optimally. The seeds can be eat directly after boiling and can also be changed as flour because it contains carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. This study was conducted to test the levels of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats of jackfruit seeds after boiled at different times, which were 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 45 minutes. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats were determined successively using the phenol sulfuric acid, the kjeldahl and the soxhlet extraction methods. Levels of carbohydrates at various boiling times of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 45 minutes were 49.06%, 43.68%, dan 42.75%. Levels of proteins were 3.928%, 3.84%, and 3.57%, while levels of fats were 5.40%, 0.95%, and 0.40%. The results showed that the longer the boiling time affected to declining levels of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Abstract

Determination of concentration of lead (Pb) and iron (Fe) has been conducted in sea water in Paranggi village, district of Ampibabo. The method used is spectrophotometry, namely atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Sea water sample is taken in the morning with a 3-point sampling, which is at a distance of ± 5 m, 10 m and 15 m respectively. The 3-point sampling is from the port side of the back end of the ship and the port end of the backrest ship at a distance of ± 5 m ahead. Analysis of Pb level is measured at a wavelength of 217 nm and Fe at a wavelength of 248.3 nm. Result shows that Pb levels at point A is 0.4869 mg/L, at point B is 0.5304, and at point C is 0.4869 while for the Fe levels shows that at point A is 0.3073, at point B is 0.2652, and at point C is 0.2863. The range of the concentration of Pb is between 0.4869 to 0.5304 mg/L. This concentration is higher when compared with the NAB Pb, 0.025 mg/L. Furthermore, the range of the concentration of Fe is from 0.2652 to 0.3073 mg/L. Similarly to Pb result above, this concentration is higher when compared with the NAB Fe, 0.01 mg /L.

Abstract

Palm fibers are solid waste from the palm oil processing plant. Palm fibers can be used as an alternative fuels for traditional and modern (bioethanol). This study aims to determine the amount of heat generated from the burning of palm fibers, and determine the number of conversions of bioethanol from palm fibers through the fermentation techniques. In this study used a bomb calorimeter is determine heat value and apply through fermentation using saccharomyces cereviseae in various times of 5 and 11 days to synthesis ethanol. The step in this study were sample preparation, delignification, hydrolysis with acid variation, and fermentation. Determination of bioethanol content from the fermentation was analysed using ethanol sensor. The heat value of palm fibers is equal to 4708.21 cal/g and the highest ethanol fermented product obtained on days 11, ie 5.23%. It can be concluded that palm fibers can be used potentially as an alternative renewable fuels to substitute coal or diesel power.

Abstract

Mango (Mangifera indica L) seeds never to used, so they need efforts to be as food ingredients such as flour. Gadung mango seed was one type of mango seeds used as flour. This study aims to determine the nutrient content i.e. carbohydrates, fats, and proteins of Gadung mango seed flour produced through sulfurization and without sulfurization. Sodiumbisulfite (NaHSO3) with a concentration of 730 ppm was used for mango seed soak for 4 hours at sulfurization stage. The results showed that the Gadung mango seed flour through sulfurization had levels of 13.89% carbohydrate, 12.94% fat and 8.48% protein, while the mango seed flour without sulfurization had levels of 20% carbohydrate, 14.83% fat, and 4.84% protein. The technique of sulfurization on making mango seed flour can reduce levels of carbohydrates and fats as well as maintaining the protein content.

Abstract

This study aims to determine concentration of zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) metals on the sea water in coastal areas Mamboro District of North Palu. The method used was a spectrophotometry using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Seawater samples were taken from three different points, is A (5 meter), B (10 meter), and C (15 meter) within ± 5 m from the coastline, and sampling started from the edge of the harbor of cooking oil companies. Results of the analysis of zinc contents from the three points are 0.155 mg/L at point A, 0.126 mg/L at point B, and 0.109 mg/L at point C, respectively. Moreover, the lead contents are 0.35 mg/L at point A, 0.391 mg/L at point B, and 0.433 mg/L at point C , respectively. Concentration of zinc metal on the sea water in Mamboro coastal marine ranged from 0.109 mg/L – 0.155 mg/L, which is higher than the threshold value zinc metal, 0.01 mg/L, where concentration of lead metal on the sea water in Mamboro coastal marine ranged from 0.35 mg/L – 0.433 mg/L, which is higher than the threshold value of lead metal, 0.025 mg/L.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the learning outcomes of students in the class which is treated with the cooperative learning model Jigsaw whether it is better than the untreated class on chemical equilibrium topic. This study is a quasi-experimental research design with Non Randomized Pretest- posttest control group design. The population in this study is 245 students of class XI MIA with academic year 2014/2015, from 8 classes. The sample in this study class XI MIA 5 (n = 32) as an experimental class while class XI MIA 6 (n = 32) as a control class. The analysis of data obtained in the experimental class, X1 1 valueis 79.66 with a standard deviation = 9.41. In the control class, X2 valueis 70.03 with a standard deviation = 11.13. The result of hypothesisis found that tcalculated>ttable (5.53 > 1.67) with a significance level (α = 0.05) and degrees of freedom = 62. This shows that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that student learning outcomes in class which is treated using the cooperative learning model Jigsaw is better than the untreated class on chemical equilibrium topic.

Abstract

This study determine the contact time, pH, and the optimum concentration of the solution of copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) from skin the plantain (musa sapientum). Advances in the industry today resulted in many human activities that caused increasing impact of the pollution on surrounding of the environment. Environmental pollution by heavy metals being a serious problem along with increasing the use of heavy metals in the industry. The method used in this study was a laboratory experiment using colorimeter. The results showed that the adsorption of copper and iron on the plantain bark influence a time variation of Cu and Fe occurred in the 60 minute and 30 minute (99.64% and 99.54%); variation of pH for Cu and Fe occurrs in pH 4 and pH 3 (99.62% and 99.58%) and variation of concentration for Cu and Fe occurred at 20 ppm and 1 ppm (80.74% and 96.81%), respectively.
