Abstract

Tomato fruit is one of the fruits susceptible to decay because of its high water content. The durability of tomato can be improved by storing in a humid place or by adding of a preservative. Phaleriamacrocarpa (Scheff.) boerlleaf can act as an antibacterial due to the saponin compounds contained therein. This study aimed to investigate the phaleriamacrocarpa (Scheff.) boerlleaf extract as a preservative for tomatoes, and to determine the concentration of leaf extract to sustain tomatoes texture longer. The method used in this study was the maceration for extraction, and iodometric titration to determine of vitamin C levels before and after curing. The results showed that the pickling tomatoes using phaleriamacrocarpa (Scheff.) boerl leaf extract with a concentration of 6% sustained tomatoes up to 9 days, and the fruit decreased levels of vitamin C from 33.440 mg/100 g material into 27.580 mg/100 g of material.

Abstract

Forest onion is a plant that is widely used as a traditional medicine and natural antioxidants. The aim of this study is to determine the extract of the forest onion that can inhibit the growth of the fungus candida albicans and to compare the inhibitory of extract of the forest onion (eleutherine palmifolia (L.) merr) by using different solvents, namely ethanol and distilled water which is carried out by the method of pitting. Suspension of the fungus candida albicanswas obtained from Clinical Laboratory Palu, Central Sulawesi. The results of research obtained that the inhibition of extract of the forest onion on growth of the fungus candida albicanswith ethanol was greater than with distilled water, the percentace was 65.44% and 54.78% for each solvents. It can be concluded that extract of the forest onion has the inhibitory on the growth of the fungus candida albicans.

Abstract

Study on the antioxidant activity test has been conducted using palado (agave angustifolia) leaves from Tondo, Central Sulawesi. Palado plant is one of the succulent plants that can grow to a large size, and it is possible to contain antioxidant compounds. This study was conducted by an experimental method using maceration extraction technique and 1,1-difenil-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as the free radicals source, and vitamin C as the positive control, whereas UV-Vis spectrophotometer as for determining wavelength (λ) of palado leaves extracts. Sample used as much as 5 grams palado leaves, and methanol as the solvent. Variation concentrations of palado leaves extract were 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 ppm. The results showed that the IC50 value of palado leaves extract was 26.182 ppm. Palado leaves extract is classified as a very powerful antioxidant based on the IC50 value. The optimum percentage antioxidant activity of palado leaves extract in inhibiting free radicals was by 84.84%.

Abstract

Heavy metals will cause environmental problems. One of the efforts that can minimize level of heavy metal from their solutions is to reduce heavy metals content, so that safely discarded at sea/river. One such way to reduce level of heavy metals is by adsorption. Some agricultural waste are potential as an adsorbent, namely a corncob. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the optimum weight of adsorben from corncob to absorb Pb(II) from its solution. In this study, the corncob was used as an adsorbent to adsorb Pb(II) by using three methods, namely powder, charcoal and activated charcoal with a solution of HCl. The parameters tested were amount of adsorbent or weight of the powder, charcoal and activated charcoal by the weight variation of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 120 mg to determine the optimum conditions in adsorbing Pb(II). The optimum conditions are obtained for the powder was 80 mg with the absorption of 96.92%, the charcoal is 80 mg with absorption of 97.29%, and the activated charcoal was 40 mg with the absorption of 94.70%.

Abstract

Taro plant contains high enough of carbohydrate, so it can be used as an alternative raw material for producing bioethanol. This study aimed to determine the ratio of hydrochloric acid to taro root starch and hydrolysis time of taro root starch for producing a high sugar content, as well as to determine the bioethanol content produced from the fermentation of taro root starch using baker’s yeast. The results showed that the best ratio of hydrochloric acid 15% to the taro root starch was at 10:1 (v/w), resulted in a total sugar content of 0.651%. The best hydrolysis time of taro root starch was 2.5 hours, resulted in sugar content of 0.653%. The fermentation of sugar resulted in from hydrolysis was carried out at room temperature for 5 days. The ethanol content obtained from the fermentation was 7.716%.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze misconception of student in class XI SMA Negeri 1 Banawa Tengah on the buffer material. The type of this research is a description where the subject of research is 41 student. The instrument used was a multiple choice test with reasoned (CRI). It consists of 13 items which was accompanied by questionnaries. The results were obtained information that the students have misconceptions on subconcepts calculate pH buffer solution and way of working buffer solution, with amount of 37 students (46%). students at least experienced a misunderstanding on the component subconcepts buffer solution and way of working buffer solution with amount 17 student (21%). Furthermore, causes of student misconception is due to the lack of interest of student in the buffer solution material (22%), praconception and less understanding of the concept (80%), textbook of student (34%), and model of learning (57%). The result of this study shows that most of students in class XI SMA Negeri Banawa Tengah have misconception on the buffer material.

Abstract

Moringa seed (moringa oleifera L.) is a kind foodstuffs that contains calcium. Calcium is a mineral that is needed by our bodies in all ages, for the infants to the elderly. Calcium is useful in the formation and maintenance of bones and teeth. The aim of this study is to determine the concentration calcium (Ca) in moringa seed (moringa oleifera L.) and its utilization as the fabrication of toothpaste. The method used in this study was a laboratory experiment using a flame photometer. The results showed that the concentration of calcium in moringa seeds with three repetitions was 131.67 ± 12.58 mg/100g. The appropriate composition of materials to make toothpaste from moringa seeds including the roughness tests of toothpaste and based on the fondness of panelists was 25:5 (morinanga seed:NaHCO3). Furthermore, the test of freshness, aroma, and colour with comparison of glycerin, mint leaves, betel leaves and food coloring 7.5: 5: 5: 2.

Abstract

This study aims to study on the effect the addition of Cd (II) metal ions towards extraction of lead (II) ions using liquid emulsion membrane technique. Various concentrations of Cd (II) ions used in this study were 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 ppm. Benzoyl acetone was used as a chelating agent for extraction. Spectrophotometer spectrodirect was used to measure extraction products. The results showed that percent extraction of lead (II) ion prior additional Cd(II) ion was 99.06%, and it was decreased up to 97.95% after additional Cd(II) ion up to 250 ppm.
