Abstract

One of the potential plantations in Dolo and Labuan area is coconut plant. Coconut water as one of the coconut product has not been widely used, even it contains many minerals. Potassium contained in coconut water can be utilized an additional mineral intake for human. This study aimed to determine potassium (K) levels in green coconut (coconut viridis) water from Dolo and Labuan areas using spectrophotometric. The results showed that the average concentration of K in green coconut water samples from Dolo area was 162 ppm, while from Labuan area was 154 ppm. This study concluded that the higher level of potassium is in green coconut water samples from Dolo area.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of problem based learning model (PBL) using Lesson Study (LS) pattern on the quality of chemistry learning at SMAN 1 Banawa. This research type was a quasi-experiment with design equivalent pretest-posttest design. The sample used in this research was the students of class XI MIPA 3 as the experiment with the amount of 32 students and students of class XI MIPA 4 as the control class with the amount of 33 students. The result of data analysis obtained, the mean value of experiment class ( ) was 74.03 and the control class ( ) was 69.84. The average of students’ activity in the experimental and control class respectively was 56.66%, and 56.66% that was categorized as active enough. The result of hypothesis testing with two-party of t-test statistic obtained was –ttable< tcount> +ttable(tcount = 5.37 dan ttable = 1.67) with a significance level α = 0.05 and degrees of freedom 63, H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted based on the results of data analysis. So it can be concluded that there is influence of PBL model using LS pattern on the quality of chemistry learning in SMAN 1 Banawa.

Abstract

Kangkong, or water spinach is a well-known leaf vegetable because it is delicious cheap and easily obtained. There is two types of water spinach that most consumed, water-water spinach grown in the wet and watery and land-water spinach grown in dry place or moor. Kangkong can be consumed in various type of foods, in addition, it’s also rich in vitamins, protein, carotene, amino acids, phosphorus, sitosterol and mineral materials, especially iron and calcium. The aim of the study was to determine the concentration of calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe) in water-water spinach (ipomeae aquatica forsk) and land-water spinach (ipomeae reptan forsk) from palu. The research was conducted using alkaline digestion using nitric acid with the SSA instrument. The data showed that the concentration of Ca in stems and leaves of water-kangkong was 15.375 mg/kg and 12.833 mg/kg, and land–kangkong was 74.666 mg/kg and 31.000 mg/kg, while the concentration of Fe in stems and leaves of water-water spinach was 301.166 mg/kg and 232.500 mg/kg, and land-water spinach was 458.000 mg/kg and 238.750 mg/kg.

Abstract

Rosella is one of the plants that has many benefits as well as nutrients used potentially as food ingredients such as jelly candy. Jelly candy was made by mixing rosella flower extracts with a gelling agent. This study aimed to determine the effect of the addition of gelatin from milkfish bones toward the production of jelly from rosella flowers and to determine the addition concentration of gelatin from milkfish bones to obtain a good quality of jelly candy. The gelling agent used was gelatin derived from milkfish bones. Gelatin from milkfish bones was made through several stages i.e. degreasing, demineralization, extraction, and drying then applied to produce jelly candy. Rosella flower was extracted using the infusion method at a temperature of 70 oC. The addition concentration of gelatin varied of 10, 12, 14, 16 18, and 20%. Parameters used were water content and organoleptic test covering of color, aroma, flavor, and texture. Results showed that addition of gelatin from milkfish bones influenced strongly on the moisture content, color, aroma, flavor, and texture of the jelly candy. The good quality of rosella jelly candy was obtained by addition concentration of gelatin of 18% with a water content of 8.76%, and the elasticity was preferred by the panelists.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine protein and carbohydrate levels contained in waste of banana kepok (Musa paradisiaca Normalis) trees. Samples were taken from Mpanau Sigi Central Sulawesi. This study used Kjeldahl method in determining protein level, and anthrone method in determining reducing sugar level. The analysis results obtained in the hard layer of banana tree are 3.05% of protein level and 6.75% of carbohydrate level, while in the soft layer of banana tree are 0.08% of protein level and 4.75% of carbohydrate level, respectively. This study concluded that protein and carbohydrate levels obtained from the hard layer of banana kepok trees waste is higher, than literatures.

Abstract

Rambutan peel is one source of biocharcoal production to adsorb metal ions because of the potential of cellulose content. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of biocharcoal from rambutan peel as well as to determine biocharcoal adsorption to zinc and copper based on the variation of biocharcoal weight and metal ions concentrations. The method used in this study was a laboratory experiment, and metals were analyzed using spectrophotometer spectroDirect. The results showed the moisture and ash levels of the biocharcoal were 0.4% and 5.4%, respectively. The optimum weight of biocharcoal to adsorb Zn and Cu ions was 40 mg with their percentage adsorption of 98.81% and 98.94%, respectively. The optimum concentration adsorption of biocharcoal to Zn ions was 40 ppm with the percentage adsorption of 98.32%, while for the Cu ions was 60 ppm with the percentage adsorption of 98.25%.

Abstract

Adsorbent has been widely used in the purification of used cooking oil to improve their quality. This study aimed to determine the quality of cooking oil after adsorbing with tamarindus indica L. seeds. Parameters of the oil quality were color, free fatty acid, peroxide number, and moisture levels. The oil color was determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, free fatty acid level using acid-base titration method, peroxide number level using iodometric titration method, and moisture level using gravimetric method. Concentration of adsorbent on the adsorption process varied by 1%, 3% and 5% with two types of cooking oil sample namely traditional cooking oil and brand X cooking oil. The results showed that the oil color became brighter by adding adsorbent. Free fatty acid, peroxide number, and moisture levels decreased by increasing the adsorbent concentration. The best result was obtained at 5% adsorbent concentration. Traditional cooking oil decreased in absorbance from 0.2955 to 0.0610, free fatty acid level decreased from 2.7300% to 0.8300%, peroxide number level decreased from 7 meq/kg to 2.4 meq/kg, and moisture level decreased from 1.5191% to 0.1495%. While for the cooking oil of brand X decreased in absorbance from 0.4355 to 0.1860, free fatty acid level decreased from 1.1900% to 0.6600%, peroxide number level decreased from 4 meq/kg to 1.3 meq/kg, and moisture level decreased from 1.4198% to 0.1197%.

Abstract

Beluntas are bushes that may consumed as vegetable which mostly founded in Central of Sulawesi. The research purposes to determine the concentration of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and posphorus (P) in beluntas leaves (pluchea indica L.). The concentration of Ca, Mg, and Na were obtained using atomic absorption spectrophotometer and the concentration of P was obtained using spectrodirect spectrophotometer. The average concentration of mineral in beluntas leaves are Ca 678.71 mg/100g, Mg 93.38 mg/100g, Na 198.11 mg/100g, and P 29.84 mg/100g.

Abstract

Ant nest plants have the greatest diversity in Papua, but due to the different location and climate between Papua and Sulawesi, especially Central Sulawesi, the composition and the active compound are different. Differences of plant species will give differences in the content and quality of simplicia from ant nest plants. This study aimed to determine the power of antioxidant in ant nest extract (Myrmecodia tuberosa Jeck) from Toli-Toli, Central Sulawesi. The sample of this study was taken at Labonu, Basidondo, and extracted by maceration method. The testing of antioxidant activity used DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrihydrazyl). Antioxidant activity of ant nest extract was measured using spectrophotometry with concentration 20, 40, 60 and 80 ppm. The results showed that ant nest plant extract was classified as a very powerful antioxidant with an IC50 value of 26.84 ppm.

Abstract

Study on the effect of basil (Ocimum sanctum Linn) leaf extract has been done as a repellent against mosquito (Aedes aegypti). This study aimed to examine the effect of basil leaf extract on Aedes aegypti using an electrical device. This study usedan extraction method with ethanol 96%solvent followed by evaporation to obtain concentrated basil leaf extract. The concentrated extract was diluted to concentrations of 20, 30, 40 and 50% w/v. The results showed that the concentration of basil leaf extract 50% eliminatedmost mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti).
