Abstract

Non-conventional hydrocarbon exploration is one way to develop shale potential to increase oil and gas reserves in Indonesia. Shale is a rock that is rich in organic material and is a target for non-conventional exploration, because it functions as a source and reservoir rock with a large shale volume and low permeability. Isopach maps can represent the thickness of shale layers and have the potential to become non-conventional exploration targets located in thick shale layers. Based on this background, this research will identify shale layers in the offshore fields of the North East Java Basin for non-conventional oil and gas exploration. The methods used are well logging and seismic methods. This research focuses on determining the location of shale layer depocenters based on isopach maps as a first step in localizing areas that will be targeted for the development of non-conventional hydrocarbon exploration. This research uses 29 2D seismic lines and 2 well data, namely NP-1 and NP-2 wells and the research target is the Kujung Formation and Ngimbang Formation in the offshore area of the North East Java Basin. The results obtained from the isopach map show that the depocenter location of the Kujung Formation is in the northwest direction with a shale thickness of 600-800 meters, while the Ngimbang Formation is in the east direction with a shale thickness of 1000-1300 meters. From the depocenter location, it can be seen that this location has a wealth of organic material so it has the potential to become a source rock and reservoir.

Abstract

Barium strontium titanate or BST (Ba1-xSrxTiO3) photocatalysts with distinct Sr substitutions (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8) were fabricated using the co-precipitation technique. This study aimed to investigate the influence of the high Sr2+ contents on the structural property and photocatalytic activity to identify the optimal composition. X-ray diffraction (XRD analysis) confirmed cubic BST formation at all Sr concentrations and reduced lattice constants with increasing Sr²⁺ contents. Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) investigation also validated the formation of the prepared BST with different Sr contents. The photocatalytic activity of the BST photocatalysts was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV light irradiation. Notably, the photocatalytic efficiency improved at x=0.5 to x=0.7, attributed to enhanced lattice distortion induced by Sr substitution. However, a further increase of x = 0.8 resulted in reduced photocatalytic activity, likely due to the formation of a more symmetric structure and reduced crystal distortion. Ba₀.₃Sr₀.₇TiO₃ exhibited the highest degradation rate (41%) among all samples tested. The results suggest that the high Sr level critically affects the structural properties and photocatalytic efficiency of BST and underline x = 0.7 as the optimal composition for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract

Carbon is one of the abundant elements obtained from organic matter, one of which is found in the fronds of oil palm trees which is found on the Kalimantan Island. This research uses local organic waste in East Kalimantan to be used as activated carbon material, palm frond waste. Activated carbon material is one of the materials that has a high surface area and is widely applied for adsorbent materials. This study aims to analyze and compare the surface area of activated carbon synthesized from palm frond waste using different activating agents. This research also analyzes the nature of the material structure, surface area, pore size and pore volume of activated carbon. The method used is the process of thermal activation and chemical activation to convert carbon into activated carbon with variations of activating agents, phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). XRD, BET-SAA and SEM-EDX characterization tests were conducted. The results obtained show that the amorphous structure of activated carbon has been formed and there is an increase in BET surface area due to the activation process. The surface area obtained for the Non-Activated Carbon (C) sample is 15,149 m2/g, Activated Carbon-NaOH (AC-1) is 2,082 m2/g, Activated Carbon-H3PO4 (AC-2) is 307,692 m2/g. This shows that the best sample with the highest surface area is the AC-2 sample which uses the H3PO4 chemical activator solution.

Abstract

Alginate is an interesting natural biopolymer due to its many benefits and good biological properties. Observing the mechanical properties of PVA/Alginate fibers made by electrospinning machines can help predict their behavior and measure their performance under various conditions including applied external forces. Therefore, this study investigated the elastic properties of PVA/Alginate membranes, specifically tensile strength and elongation. The fabrication material used is PVA / Alginate solution with a PVA solution concentration of 20% and alginate solution 2.5%. The electrospinning process is carried out by optimizing at a voltage of 25 kV, the distance between the spinneret end and the collector is 15 cm, the flow rate is 130, and the spinneret diameter variations are 0.4 mm, 0.6 mm, and 0.8 mm. To determine the morphology of the fiber surface, observations were made using ocular microscopes and SEM. From this observation, it is known that the morphology formed using a 0.4 mm spinneret has the tightest structure among the three sizes of spinneret diameter. To determine the effect of spinneret diameter on the value of tensile strength and elongation, tensile strength tests are carried out. The tensile strength and elongation values of the membrane obtained with variations in spinneret diameters of 0.4 mm, 0.6 mm, and 0.8 mm are 1.96 MPa, 3.77 MPa and 6.11 MPa respectively and the elongation values are 17%, 52.7%, and 97%.  With medical material standards, it has a tensile strength value between 1 MPa – 24 MPa and an elongation value between 17% – 207%, so that PVA / Alginate fiber membranes have the potential to be applied as wound dressings.

Abstract

Theoretical investigation of the effect of the polarization angle on high-order harmonic generation in an inhomogeneous two-color field is reported. The results show that the use of two-color fields greatly enhanced the harmonic cutoff point in comparison with the one-color field from 70th to 90th orders in a homogeneous field. In addition, the introduction of an inhomogeneity parameter of 0.003 generated a broad supercontinuum of approximately 270 orders. However, an increase in the polarization angle adversely affected the harmonic cutoff.

Abstract

In diagnosing lung cancer, the medical imaging team manually identifies CT-scan images of the lungs. This identification process makes it difficult for the medical imaging team to differentiate between lung cancer and normal images. This is because there is noise in the image, which reduces the image quality, so image processing must reduce the noise. This study used median and Gaussian filters, Otsu thresholding segmentation, GLCM feature extraction, forward selection, and k-nearest Neighbor classification. The research results show that of the 22 statistical features extracted, only 16 were selected for characterizing image classification. The image datasets used are 900 image data sets for program training and 100 image data sets for program testing. With a dataset of 100 image data sets, the level of diagnostic accuracy without forward selection (22 GLCM features) was 81.67%, while the diagnostic accuracy using forward selection (16 GLCM features) was 93.22% with a sensitivity of 92.25% and specificity is 94.46%.

Abstract

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) patterns of colloidal SiO2 particles (400 nm) in solution were analysed and demonstrated using the kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulation method. The behaviour of the colloidal particles which formed electrical double layers in solution was described by the DLVO theory. The dynamic particle migrations of the EPD process were estimated by the KMC simulation to statistically determine the probable particle distribution based on thermodynamic theories. Results show that the particle distribution and deposition in solution were significantly influenced by the presence of the zeta potential value (η) in the solution, and applied voltage in the EPD system. The particles aggregated together in the solution with a small η value due to the strong Van der Waals attractive forces among the particles. If a large η value was adopted, all the particles moved away from central and scattered around the edges the system space because of the strong electrostatic (repulsive) forces among them. The external voltage applied to the EPD system in different η value can affect the formation of particle deposition pattern. The EPD pattern with little vacancy site can be fabricated using a small η value with a constant voltage operating condition. However, the vacancy sites of the EPD pattern became large by the on-off voltage operating scheme. The quality of the EPD films cannot be improved using this strategy.

Abstract

Most of the Demak Coastal area, especially on the north coast, has a subsurface structure which is quite thick sediment. The impact of an earthquake will cause damage to subsurface structures and buildings above it, so a method is needed that can determine earthquake vulnerability in an area to take mitigation steps. This research aims to analyze vulnerability to earthquakes based on natural frequency (fo), amplification (Ao) and seismic vulnerability index (SVI). The research was carried out by measuring the microseismic signal response at 89 locations using a 3-component seismograph and data logger. The research results showed that the dominant frequency varied from 0.26 – 5.26 Hz, the amplification factor varied from 0.51 – 3.56 and the seismic susceptibility index varied from 0.14-14.77 micro cm2/s. The study area was classified into low SVI (SVI < 5), medium SVI (5 < SVI < 10), and high SVI (SVI > 10).  The potential earthquake hazard described by SVI with a value range of 10 < SVI (high classification) is found at observation station 60 (Bedono Hamlet) and observation station 70 (Karangwaru Hamlet Cemetery)

Abstract

Recent advancements in the synthesis of carbon dots utilizing basic equipment are crucial for their large-scale production. This study explores the use of household pressure cookers to synthesize carbon dots from fish waste. A thermocouple and manometer are integrated into the cooker to regulate temperature and monitor pressure. Optimization of the equipment reveals that heating 2000 mL of distilled water to 100°C requires 20, 30, and 32 minutes with power inputs of 800 W, 700 W, and 600 W, respectively. The modified cooker achieves optimal pressure and temperature at 2.4 bars, 1.7 bars, and 1.5 bars, and 136°C, 123°C, and 122°C after 60 minutes of heating with the same power inputs. These results demonstrate that a household pressure cooker can effectively synthesize carbon dots. Experiments using dried Red Snapper fish spray powder, both unground and ground, at 800 W, 700 W, and 600 W, reach optimal pressure of 2.4 bar in 36, 49, and 58 minutes, and temperatures of 128°C, 131°C, and 136°C. Carbon dots are synthesized from fish scales as fine fibers with a 1:5 weight ratio of scales to distilled water, employing 600 W power, 2.4 bar pressure, 136°C temperature, 58 minutes of boiling, 5 minutes of centrifugation at 3500 rpm, and 45 minutes of ultrasound at 42 kHz. The formation of carbon dots is confirmed by an absorption peak at 405 nm in the UV-Vis spectrum, indicating high absorbance and bright blue fluorescence. Further investigation is required to optimize equipment using various fish scales and purification processes

Abstract

The bolster is one of the main structural elements in railway bogies, playing the central role of transmitting vertical and dynamic loads from the train body to the wheel-sets. The mechanical behavior of an ASTM A148 Grade 80-50 material bolster under vertical static loading is examined in this work. This simulation is analyzed by applying the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using student version software with nonlinear static analysis, which was run with a tetrahedral mesh and Newton-Raphson iteration. There are three variables, respectively, two variables as dependent, such as Von Misses Stress (VMS) and total deformation resulting from the loading condition. Then, the independent variable is a loading value based on the AAR M-202 standard. In this work, three values of loading condition were carried out, such as P1 = 536010.7 N, P2 = 854058.8 N, P3 = 1027500 N respectively. The result of the simulation shows that the maximum average stress in the critical area is 305.58 MPa, which is still less than the yield strength of the material at 390 MPa. The maximum elastic deflection of 0.102 mm is well within the AAR M-202 standard allowable values. In conclusion, bolster bogie based on ASTM A148 Grade 80-50 has reliability for static loading and is available with a safety factor according to the AAR M-202 standard.
