Abstract

China’s tremendous economic growth from 1978 to 2010s has enabled Beijing to expand military growth for Beijing. This has made China to become more prosperous and stronger than ever before. This is also shifting the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region, especially when the United States is already being the dominant power since the end of Cold War. Throughout different years the United States has had different perceptions on commenting China’s rise. Since 2020 relations between two countries have been intensified when then Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi mentioned the resurfacing of “Cold War” mentality. This essay employed examples from case studies and interactions between leaders and social actors. This essay is going to discuss extensively on the rise of China and the reactions from the United States towards that. Furthermore, it is going to explain how a security dilemma between the two countries occurred that stemmed from the two factors aforementioned. This writing discovered that the rise of China that completely shifted the balance of power is through military presence in South China Sea. China has employed military, diplomatic and economic powers to influence the reality on the ground. This is a reality that United States had to willingly accepted and trying to alter course of balance of power have been the norm for Washington. Lastly, this writing concludes that security dilemma occurred for both countries since the two are suspicious to one another.

Abstract

The Global South has always been a running contributor to the global inequality index, becoming a threat to international stability and sustainability. In most cases, it is found that colonial dependency is one major factor that causes this hindrance in development, leading to inequality. In its journey to independence, Indonesia had undergone a strict economic system under Dutch colonialism, and further transitioned to two different governing systems before its reformation, producing different outcomes of economic policy management and spread of inequality. Thus, this research wishes to understand the differences of economic system governance between the Soekarno and Soeharto era, and whether they possess any remnants of colonial dependency integrated within them. The Dependency Theory is used in this research with the concepts of postcolonialism, development, and inequality embedded into the discussions. The data of this research is gathered through academic literature, utilizing a qualitative approach, and is conducted with a descriptive and historical comparative approach. This research finds that Dutch colonialism contributed a major role in how Indonesia manages its economic strategies and how it impacts its high social and economic inequality. Further stretching to post-independence, it is found that Soekarno's decoupling of Western values translated worse into the economy, compared to Soeharto's Western-centric approaches to trade. The root causes of colonial dependencies and habits affect the outcome of economic habits, and thus contribute to the efficiencies of how Indonesia manages its economy during the period before reformation.

Abstract

La Oroya Mining is an accurate example that environmental degradation and human rights violations can happen as a cause and effect. Mining in La Oroya Peru is very famous because it is one of Peru's largest sources of income and is its trademark. Meanwhile, this mining is also proof that Peru continues its imperialism. However, it cannot be denied that the effects of mining itself have had an impact on environmental degradation and human rights violations in local communities. This mining has caused worrying short-term and long-term impacts. In this paper, the authors and team try to analyze using qualitative methods through secondary data from journals. The aim is to find key factors that cause and impact this environmental degradation and human rights violation. The team authors also try to connect with three International Relations theories, which are realism, constructivism, and green political theory to look at it from three different points of view to find out the details. Further, the author also tries to trace what actions the Peruvian people have taken, the involvement of the IACHR in this problem as an international organization, the participation of NGOs, and how it continues. Furthermore, the role of the government will also be explored whether they help in solving this problem or make it worse and continue. Lastly, team authors try to propose effective solutions that can be implemented to help solve this environmental problem.

Abstract

The European Union (EU) has implemented stringent trade regulations, particularly regarding consumer privacy protection governed by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Countries or organizations facing privacy issues or lacking adequate data protection standards must encounter barriers in business expansion in the EU. Through a case study of Alibaba, this research specifically analyzes the challenges and GDPR compliance strategies in business expansion within the European Union. The study investigates the implementation of GDPR in the EU and analyzes all the strategies and actions taken by Alibaba to comply with GDPR. The research framework is based on Neoliberalism theory, as well as international trade concepts, privacy and personal data concepts, public authority concepts, and multinational corporation concepts. The research employs a qualitative approach with descriptive research methods and a case study. Data were obtained from secondary sources and analyzed using narrative analysis techniques. The study analyzes the economic relationship between the EU and China as a background, reviews the development of consumer privacy protection regulations in the EU, and analyzes Alibaba's expansion strategy in the EU. Based on the research findings, GDPR does not allow countries/companies with privacy issues and inadequate data protection to operate in the EU. As a company meeting these violation criteria, Alibaba successfully expanded in the EU by addressing internal issues and establishing regulations compliant with GDPR in each of its subsidiaries.

Abstract

The fall of Kabul in 2021 and the return of Taliban to leadership created dilemma for various countries’ foreign policy, including Indonesia. For Indonesia, diplomatic relations with Afghanistan which has been built since their independence must be maintained. On the other side, the way Taliban take over the leadership and various main values of Taliban are contradictory with international values and norms, which makes it difficult to acknowledge the government of Taliban. In facing this dilemma, Indonesia keeps the relationship with Afghanistan even though Indonesia has not acknowledged the government of Taliban. Indonesian foreign policy towards Afghanistan can be seen in the form of educational assistance for the people of Afghanistan, especially higher education access for woman, Using the Constructivism perspective, this research finds out that identity, values, and norms acknowledged by Indonesia as a democratic country with the most Muslim population in the world are sharpening its foreign policy. In addition, the leadership of Indonesia Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi as the first woman to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs becomes one of the most important factors that affects the choices of Indonesian foreign policy. Retno Marsudi is well known for her priority of the importance of education for woman and the value of global Islamic solidarity.
