Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Press and Social Criticism in the New Order Period: The Case of Tanjung Priok Event of 1984 in the Views of Merdeka and Kompas Newspapers in Jakarta”. The results of the study show that the news and views of press are usually reflected in editorials, corner notes, news headlines, and analysis of the news. In this context, newspapers of Merdeka and Kompas, in their news and views, generally support the government to resolve the Tanjung Priok case. The support of both newspapers was due to the New Order regime was closely watching the press coverage. Kompas newspaper even openly expressed its support for the New Order government, which has protected and supported the newspaper owned by Catholic minority in the midst of the mostly Muslim readers. Meanwhile, even though the Merdeka newspaper supported the New Order government, but this newspaper implicitly blamed the New Order government for proposing the Pancasila Bill as a single principle and various other policies, which eventually led to the occurrence of bloody events.KEY WORD: Press and Government; Social Criticism; Merdeka and Kompas Newspapers; Tanjung Priok Event; News and Views.About the Author: Andi Suwirta, M.Hum. adalah Dosen Senior di Departemen Pendidikan Sejarah FPIPS UPI (Fakultas Pendidikan Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia), Jalan Dr. Setiabudhi No.229 Bandung 40154, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: One important and most overwhelming issue in Muslim community is the dominance of the Wahabi doctrine in Saudi Arabia, which had been considered as the main religious ideology and the backbone of the Bedouin Arabs’ unification in helping the politico-religious movement led by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdel Wahhab and Al-Saud family to form the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. By using the historical methods and qualitative-descriptive approaches, this paper examines the Wahabi doctrine and its influence; or in more specific way, to define the concept of the Wahabi doctrine, and how far it helped in establishing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as influencing several Islamic movements in other Muslim territories. The findings show that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is generally regarded as one of the earliest initiators of the Islamic reformation from as early as the 18th and 19th centuries, through the “Wahabiyah” movement. Besides that, the Wahabi doctrine also created several Islamic legal decisions or “fatwa” that for a few Muslim countries are not content with, such as rejecting a “fatwa” by most of the Sunni scholars that the Prophet Muhammad, after he died, can still intercede or “tawassul” with his God; rebuffing all “ijma” or consensus of the religious scholars after the death of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad; declaring other Muslim communities who do not accept the Wahabi doctrine to be infidel; and launching war against all innovations or “bid’ah” in Islam, being anti-modernization, and others.KEY WORD: Wahabi Doctrine; Politico-Religious Movement; Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdel Wahhab; Al-Saud Family. About the Authors: Assoc. Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Islam and Power in the Perspective of Political Psychology”. Understanding politics cannot be separated from the understanding of ideology. Any political party in any country has a particular ideology. Political parties take part and play a role in a country will always stand on the ideology that its embraces. So also in the study of politics in the perspective of political psychology. Any political behavior, on the other hand, will not deviate from the ideological line of the party that its embraces. This paper was written to know the explanation of Islamic politics in the perspective of political psychology. This paper is the result of reviews from various sources of reading, whether books or scientific journals. Writing this paper using qualitative methods with the source of library data. The results of the study show that among Islamic and political thought, proposed by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Habib al-Mawardi, Imam al-Ghazali, and Ibn Taymiyya, these ideas are widely understood and become the guidance of Muslims with Sunni’ school of thought. Nevertheless, the political behavior undertaken by a person, whether individual or group, is generally always associated with S-R or Stimulus – Response theory from the behavioralism school of thought. On the other hand, the individual and groups behavioral sources are rooted in his/her ideology, attitudes, and values. In this context, Islamic and political relations can be explained, both through political science and political psychology, in the Islamic perspectives. Thats because Islamic politics can be integrated with political psychology. Finally, to reduce the hard-line political insights, or radicalism in Islam, the science of political psychology can be used to solve the social and political problems.KEY WORD: Islam and Politics; Political Psychology; Ideology, Attitude and Value; Muslims; Social and Political Problems.About the Author: Dr. Saliyo adalah Dosen di STAIN (Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri) Kudus, Jalan Conge Ngembalrejo, Kudus 59322, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Sufism is no doubt an Islamic way of life to enjoy the blessings of God, which involves vigorous meditation and prayers as well as emphasis on “inner-self” rather than external rituals. This paper, by applying the historical method and qualitative study, is intended to analyse the ideology of Sufism and side by side the nature of their activities so as to avoid conflict in the human society as a whole and obviously among the Muslims. The findings show that Islamic mysticism is not separated from Islam and, at the same time, Prophet Muhammad SAW (Salallahu Alaihi Wassalam or peace be upon him) is considered in high esteem in its ideals. The teachings of the Sufi saints are still relevant today, because it invites and elaborates spiritual unity of humanity and above all intra-religious and inter-religious understanding in order to minimize conflict between various creeds and faith holders of India. It is a fact that India is famous for her composite cultural tradition and in the atmosphere of multi-religious as well as multi-lingual society, an idea of mutual co-existence is essential and a vital role was played by the Sufi saints at a moment, when Islam came to India as a new religion and way of life. Love of God in the form of developing a mind to love His creatures became an important theme of common concern of the mystic saints, who came to India and settled in this country in a historical moment. They taught and appealed to the people at large that the Divine discloses itself in the human races as a whole and, thus, they propounded to all the philosophy of love and cordial relationship among human being; and, thereby, to provide means for the betterment of humanity and also to enjoy His blessings.KEY WORD: Islamic Mysticism; Intellectual Currents; Inner-Self; Islamic Humanism; Greater India. About the Author: Professor Ichhimuddin Sarkar is a Lecturer at the Department of History, University of North Bengal, India. Abstract

ABSTRACT: “The Relationship of Al-Quran and Al-Hadith with the Science of History: Reflection of the Lesson from the God Almighty”. The Al-Quran indeed contains a variety of knowledges, no exception to the science of history. This clearly shows that Islam also concerned the historical events, as recorded in the Al-Quran and Al-Hadith. This article, by applying the method of historical research and descriptive-qualitative explanations, wants to analyze not only the history of human origin according to the Al-Quran, the history of the Prophets, and the history of real and supernatural creation in the Quran, which is oriented in the past, but there is also a connection between the historical description in the Quran and Al-Hadith with the latest problems and predictions about the coming of the Day of Judgment, which is historical oriented in the future. Although the history of the Al-Quran and the Al-Hadith has reached thousands of years, and has made many advances in human civilization, but that does not change much is the human activities contrary to the will of Allah Almighty. Negative values such as those found in the history of the Al-Quran, in human beings today, still exist and widespread. Therefore, it is argued that human beings today still have not been able to take lessons from what happened to the earlier races, as revealed by the historical accounts in the Al-Quran and Al-Hadith. They do not think that this will bring disaster and catastrophe from Allah SWT, God Almighty.KEY WORD: Al-Quran and Al-Hadith; Science of History; Learn; History of the Prophets; Moral Problems.About the Author: Prof. Madya Dr. Haji Awang Asbol bin Haji Mail ialah Pensyarah Kanan di Pengajian Sejarah dan Antarabangsa FASS UBD (Fakulti Sastera dan Sains Sosial, Universiti Brunei Darussalam) di Bandar Seri Begawan, Negara Brunei Darussalam.
